To the Department of Communication Disorders,
I am writing to request an appeal concerning a couple of the department’s policies, which I have already violated prior to my enrollment at the University of Houston. The first policy I am addressing states that a student must earn at least a B- in all pre-COMD courses. The second policy I would like to petition states that a student may earn no more than one grade below a B- in COMD courses. I have violated this policy at my former university (where such policy was not in place) by obtaining a C grade in Anatomy and Speech Science. I hope to be able to have the opportunity to retake these courses at the University of Houston in order to receive a higher grade and be accepted into the COMD program.

However, there were several factors that impacted my academic standing. While attending my sophomore year at St. Xavier University in Chicago (my hometown) I lived with my grandparents, who are not in their best state of health. Living with my grandparents frequently distracted me from my studies because of the amount of care and attention they needed. I was not always able to take advantage of the luxuries available to most traditional college students such as, conveniently staying on campus, studying late at the library, and studying with groups. I often found it extremely hard to focus on my schoolwork while at home, which is one of the main reasons I have decided to transfer. Throughout the school year I dealt with several overwhelming incidents of stress causing me to have to see an on campus counselor for anxiety and depression. My counselor helped me manage my stress and wealth, such as my schoolwork, taking care of my grandparents, presiding a student organization, and working as a substitute daycare
My name is Kaha Salad and I am appealing my Satisfactory Academic Progress suspension. Autumn semester of 2013 was a difficult time for me, I was going through many different changes in my life and I just didn’t know how to adapt. I experienced a personal event in the summer of 2013 that made my life change forever. My Grandmother Khadija died, she was the light of my family’s lives. My mother was immensely affected by her death, she went into a state of depression and she then stopped working. When I first came to college, I did not have a solid idea of what the experience would be like, but I was excited for this new chapter in my life. I enrolled in courses I though I would excel in but a couple of weeks into the quarter, I felt unprepared for the fast-paced courses that I seemed to be struggling in but that my peers seem to of been excelling in. Early on this cause me some hardships suddenly I did not feel that I was as smart or accomplished as they were. As a result of this my grades in my courses suffered early on. As time progressed, I became friends with a group of people who were also in my similar situation, they were first-generation college students, students, this great support network of students allowed me to gain more confidence in my academic ability and with the help of my lab work, I began to see that I could excel in college.
Although perhaps supportive of higher education their parents and Family members may view their entry into college as a break in the family system rather than a continuation of their schooling. In families, role assignments about work, family, religion and community are passed down through the generations creating intergenerational continuity. When a family member disrupts this system by choosing to attend college, he or she experiences a shift in identity, leading to a sense of loss. Not-prepared for this loss, many first-generation students may come to develop two different identities one for home and another for college, the student might feel he needs to do better in college then his parents. So the student might start feeling the pressure, that there is too much going on in his life and at home, because the parent is putting too much pressure to do better but the student just can’t stay focus on their studies, and they eventually will develop low grades he or she might just drop out of school, the parent might want them to work and go to school that could be difficult for the student. A student need to be successful in college to succeed, parent needs to be more supportive, and maybe their child can finish
First generation college students are students who comprise a distinct minority within most institutions of higher learning. These groups of students are the first generation of students in their family lineage to attend a college or university (Allwood, 1966). Due to the lack of family guidance in navigating through the college experience, first generation students face an array of obstacles upon entering the realm of higher education. These students are less likely to obtain their bachelor degree due to finance, family support and retention, all which ultimately limit their college experience. Not only do these students experience issues migrating through high school into college, they also lack the necessary resources some students need to achieve higher standards. For instance financial assistance, mentorship, and other motivating factors that can help a student grow into a professional.
Individuals’ perceptions of their life/worth have the power to control the goals that they can carry out and meet. Every day we are learning new things and everyone has his/her own unique ways of learning. My strong desire to help students with their academic, personal, and social needs make me a strong candidate as a school counselor. While I wish finding my way around the school was my only problem, I was faced with some internal challenges. As the school year started, my friends slowly started to leave to these “big shot” colleges or simply move away to other community colleges. During my freshman year in high school, my mother remarried and I had to move from Colorado to Kentucky. One year later, we relocated back to Colorado after they divorced. During my junior year in high school, my mother remarried again and I had to change schools again, although we remained in Colorado. Thus, I did not have a sense of continuity during high school and although I recognized that my path would lead me to college, I was not ready to commit myself to school full time. Instead I went to work full time as a grocery clerk and worked my way up to assistant manager. I then moved into customer service work and finally fell into an advertising manager position. I took several night courses during this period until I was ready to commit to school full time. Although I could have continued with work, I knew that it was not what I wanted to do and once I committed myself to attending school and realized that I wanted to study Sociology, I have proven myself to be an above average student. This past year, I earned all "A"s in my courses.
I was not ready, focused, or dedicated and as a result it reflected in my poor grades. This left me feeling like a failure, and my confidence was low in my abilities. It would take years before I would I feel confident enough in my abilities to return to college. As years passed I became focused, goal oriented, confident, and realized the path I wanted to pursue. It was a constant gnawing feeling to return to college. Once I felt confident in my abilities to succeed in college, I enrolled. As a result my grades improved to a 3.27 GPA. My academic strengths are my ability to focus, endure, prioritize and study. My deficiencies would be time management. I have set aside a time frame for study time this is what helped me to succeed in my undergrad program.
Being a first generation low-income student has had a huge impact on my education. It has presented as an asset and a challenge at UCI. Both my parents are first generation Americans with my father being born in Mexico and my mother born in Honduras. My father only has a third grade education and my mother has a sixth grade education. My parents don’t know English so it limited the amount of job opportunities they received in the United States. These conditions had my family and I grow up very low-income. My parents could rarely help my sisters and I with school since they have little knowledge about the education system here in the United States. My parents had no knowledge about receiving a higher education, which made my process of going to and attending college very difficult. My first year at UCI was a tough transition. I had little to no guidance and came into college not knowing what to expect. Unfortunately, this reflected in my grades. Dear Coquille School District, I am writing you in regards to extending the length of our lunch period. It is currently only 30 minutes long which does not give us, as students, enough time to eat lunch. Especially if you are like me, and like to go home to eat lunch with your family. In some families, the family members work long hours and they don’t necessarily get to see one another very often. If students were given enough time it is very possible that they could enjoy their lunch with family members and enjoy quality time with them..

I am writing today to appeal my academic probation status so that I may continue receiving the Pell Grant for my studies. I have had an obvious stumble in my beginnings with FAU but I am certain that with steps I've taken this summer I will be back on track to a good academic standing while completing my bachelor's degree. After withdrawing from two classes this past spring I dropped below the 67% required completion rate. Despite this, I persisted and paid for a summer class myself. Difficulties Attending College Today everyone thinks in order to succeed financially in life they need to have a college education, or at least most of the time this is true. I personally think that despite the many difficulties that a person is faced with, they can overcome their troubles somehow, even though sometimes they can not help but think otherwise. I, myself, have three different reasons why people find it difficult to stay in college. For one, sometimes they still have to keep on working while going to school. Two, they have children, too.
The first step to this life long journey was my path towards college.
