Struggles of a Blank Canvas Aspiring artists are encouraged by their teachers, friends and family to attend an art university after graduating high school. Art teachers recommend going to an art school because it can further an artist’s art education and skills. Friends and family believe by going to an art school, an artist will have a better work environment. There is always a mindset that artists should go to an art university like The Art Academy in San Francisco to become a great artist. However, no matter where an artist goes for college, they are still able to receive a degree in art wherever they go. A mistake in art can easily be turned into something more noteworthy in the finished piece. Artists are the ones who created the clothes a person wears; they designed the cups one drinks from- all of the things that have little to no significance to someone. However, Brian Kisida, Jay P. Greene, and Daniel H. Bowen from the Atlantic, believe that having an art education can help students improve on other studies at school. In their article “Art Makes You Smart,” Kisida, Greene and Bowen conducted a study; students who visited an art museum had stronger critical thinking and a better social and historical understanding. Kisida, Greene, and Bowen concluded that the exposure of an art education challenges students’ minds with different ideas and perspectives of society. They also believe that the importance of an art education should be the center of all schools because of these results. That is why the art departments in schools need more funding for better art programs. Do you ever just sit back and wonder how many images run through your brain everyday and thinking back on that how many of those were images from our society’s pop culture? With our ever growing technology and media of our society, children are constantly being exposed to visual stimuli. Paul Duncum, a professor of art education, studies how these stimuli not only affect our students and children but also how we can incorporate them into the art classroom in an effective way. In this paper I will illustrate to you the life and work of Paul Duncum. I will be talking about Duncum’s contributions to art education, his teaching philosophy, and how I can use his beliefs and teachings in my future as an art educator but first I would like to give you some background on Paul Duncum.

According to the National Art Education Association’s goals for schools, “all elementary schools shall require students to complete a sequential program of art instruction that integrates the study of art production, aesthetics, art criticism, and art history,” (Clark, 1987). Elementary schools are having difficulty because they are cutting back on the fine arts programming and many non-specialist classroom teachers are expected to integrate the fine arts into their daily curriculum. Art and its education are crucial in the development of young children. Therefore, it is of the upmost importance to ensure that our young children are being taught about art and its education in order for them to be successful contributing members of society. June Vail, a professor of dance at Bowdoin College explains, “The arts bring energy and creativity, a kind of learning that can only enhance every other kind of learning. Multiple studies also confirmed that there is a correlation between art engagement and students’ other achievements.” (Valeriya Metla) Even with the research linking art and better grades some educators think that it is more worth while to only focus on the core classes because it is more important to fund what is being tested than to help raise children who are creative.
In order to explore careers in the field of art and design, a student must be prepared to become an art and/or design major. First of all, the student should focus on their specific talents and goals in their work, be responsible for their own development. Also they should always keep drawing to train their eye. Art students are always learning how to do this well, and getting a head start will benefit students. Along with that, they should always practice, not only in studio areas, but even observing someone else currently in their desired career. No level of knowledge or skill they can attain will be too high. Students, remember to see as much art and design as possible. Look at all historical periods and see original works. Having seen these will help students with their knowledge of works and other artists/designers. Any art or design student should observe the visual design world around them. I selected art education as a major because I have a drive for educating others and because my passion for art is unlimited.
