Art and design are huge aspects of life today, and it influences everyone. Whether we realize it or not, there are signs all around us of trained professionals from art-related industries (Hennessey). Art and design careers can take forms that many people may not have thought about: people with art and design degrees find work in nearly every industry imaginable, in roles that didn’t even exist ten or fifteen years ago (“Art and Design Careers”). Industries and related careers are constantly expanding, providing art and design students with new opportunities. Possibilities for art and design careers are nearly infinite, and and they’re always growing. In order to explore careers in the field of art and design, a student must be prepared to become an art and/or design major. First of all, the student should focus on their specific talents and goals in their work, be responsible for their own development. Also they should always keep drawing to train their eye. Art students are always learning how to do this well, and getting a head start will benefit students. Along with that, they should always practice, not only in studio areas, but even observing someone else currently in their desired career. No level of knowledge or skill they can attain will be too high. Students, remember to see as much art and design as possible. Look at all historical periods and see original works. Having seen these will help students with their knowledge of works and other artists/designers. Any art or design student should observe the visual design world around them. Finally, students need to learn the basics of art/design history and get a comprehensive high school education. The American Academy of Art possesses an interesting background. Frank Young Sr. dreamt of creating a school that would “provide the best instructors, attract the best students, and neglect nothing that will help them to build successful careers.” In 1923, Young decided to turn his dreams into reality, thus creating The American Academy of Art (AAA). The school was originally designed as a school to offer Associate's Degrees in commercial arts, but with the help of the current owner and president of AAA, Richard H. Otto, the ‘Bachelor of Fine Arts Program’ was established in 1992 (“About the Academy”).

Recently students have had a lot to think about when it comes to our future and what we need to do to get our career and future on track. So to get some insight and some very useful help I met with Gayle Tucker of Fast Signs here in Sioux Falls. Gayle studied graphic design at South Dakota State University where she found her passion for design. I asked Gayle why she chose to pursue this field. She started out wanting to be a fashion designer but learned how little she could do with it here in South Dakota. This is when she found graphic design where she could pursue her love of design and still hold a solid career. She also found it to be more fulfilling to be creative, where everything else seemed to lack or feel mundane.
An informative news article was submitted today by a reporter on Florida Virtual giving an inside on the experiences and requirements in the career of photojournalism.
My time studying on the FDA programme has led me to pursue a career within the exhibition design industry. The work experience placement that I undertook at ‘Clearview Expo’ has helped to enforce this choice due to experiencing the client / designer input at a very personal level. I feel that this is the career path that I would like to develop within, as it allows me to fully contribute to the design industry. Upon leaving this course, I intend to sacrifice a few years interning / working for several exhibition design orientated companies, in order to gain a wealth of experience and to build a substantial portfolio of work.

Thinking and discussing about our future and career path is a common topic that often occurs in any school-like setting, but can still be considered taboo to anyone who does not know what they would like to do with their lives, such as myself. The future is still quite broad and unknown, yet I am excited to discover what I will make myself capable of doing in order to thrive and enjoy my future. Although I do have an idea of what I would like to pursue, which is art, my results on the major and career assessment help in further convincing me that the art-field is meant to be the field most suitable for me although it does depict some exceptions.
In order to prepare for this career in my future I would need to attend a college involving designing, fashion designing, and a type of art. The education I would need would be a two year to four year college for fashion designing and a one year to three year college for interior designing. These careers take a bachelors degree in some place of art. In order to want to attend college first of all I would have to maintain an acceptable grade point average of what I would possibly assume of a 2.5 or higher depending on the location of the college as well as the skill learning level of the college.
