Stereotypes In The Film Clerks

In the movie, Clerks, produced by Kevin Smith, Dante states, “I’m not even supposed to be here today!”. Dante says this throughout the whole movie, because he got called into work on his day off. The movie, Clerks, was released in 1994, during the time of Generation X. The movie portrays two young adults who have no work ethic, and who did not attend college after high school. Clerks made Dante and Randal come off as lazy and seem like they only cared about themselves. This movie has brought the wrong interpretation on Generation X, and has made people believe in the stereotypes of their Generation. Dante did not attend college after high school, and definitely was not planning on going to in the future either. Although, the movie showed that Dante was very intelligent, and was capable of attending college he was just too lazy. I had also believed that Generation Xers did not attend college from things I had heard from other people. Although, when I read, Who is Generation X?, it stated, “Compared to the generations that came before us, Generation X is a highly-educated generation of Americans. More than 60 percent of Gen-Xers have attended college at one time or another”. This is a very high percentage of people that are said to not have attended college, like the movie Clerks intended. That is more than half of Generation X that actually did attend college. Also, it was more expensive for Generation Xers to attend college than it was before their generation, which in the article, Who is Generation X?, it explained, “the student loans that Generation X used to finance college, were loaned at a much higher rate than what Baby Boomers enjoyed”. Although, Generation X still found work ethic to attend college, and work a job to eventually pay off the loans no matter how hard it
