Understanding a millennial Growing up in Africa as a millennial wasn’t easy. Over their dreams are like fairy tales something imaginal. I was stuck living a gen x live a live that is not main, people tell me what to do all the time. The poverty, poor economy, and the lack of education all played a big roll to evolve a millennial like me into a Gen X. every time I tried to do something new a wall of judgement stops me from it. As we know the world is moving fast and the technology too. Therefore, millennials had been forced to live a fast base live that changed them into an intelligent human being. The ability to multitask is a very important this days and millennials proved that they can do multiple jobs as ones. This ability made millennials very likable to have a job because they are more productive and smartly better than Gen X or Baby Boomers. The gen x are known for their motto as “Work hard, play hard”, as in order to have time to relax and have fun, they have to work hard before. But, the millennials are known for playing while working. Millennials found a way to play while working; like while typing an essay for school, we have another window open to watch Netflix with. I, as a millennial, grew up with technology. iPod, laptops, kindles, and etc. were already here to be use. If I need to write a research paper, I don’t need to go to the library and check out books on the topic like the gen x. I can just easily go online on my laptop or even my phone to get all the information I need. According to Hess, the gen x couldn’t connect with each other; if they wanted to hang out they wouldn’t be able to contact each other. But nowadays we have phones and iPod that allow us to go on social Medias, literally everybody know what everybody is doing. Even though that is a great thing for everybody to be able to connect with one another, we millennials tend to let social media 's take over their life. Millennial is a word given to the younger generations, meaning that they are considered more lazy, more selfish and more over confident than all generations previous to them. The baby boomer generation, has declared that the generation of the 90’s fits the stereotype of a millennial. Some argue that the over use of video games and text messages are to blame. People are so absorbed in creating an extension of our own lives and become obsessed with building an empire around ourselves. With Facebook and Twitter we are able to “market” ourselves. We choose how we look and act on social media. Bringing in the other characteristic of a millennial, we are considered to some as the most over confident generation. Joel Stein and Elspeth Reeve each wrote an article on this subject. Although they debated different points, each author makes a valid argument. Our generation is being generalized into one word “A millennial.” One generation is filled with many individuals, each individual having traits making them unique. It is unfair and close-minded for the older generations to make a basic assumption about an entire generation of people.
Stein, the writer of this article, introduces the Millennials as, “The Me Me Me Generation”. The New York Times defines Millennials as a person who entered adulthood around 21st century; in other words, Millennials are the person reaching young adulthood around the Year 2000. Joel Stein identifies The Millennials as lazy, entitled, selfish and shallow generation. This writer argues that the millennials are narcissistic, and their development is hindered; at the same time he also calls this generation optimistic earnest.
As the Millennials grow into fully fledged adults, they possess an increasing presence in the American workplace. To expound further, these Millenials remain able to understand ongoing trends in technology that older generations cannot understand. Therefore, they remain able to adapt to situations faster and quicker than their competitors. In particular, one millennial stands out more than the rest. Not only does this millennial possess a perfect combination of intellect and hard work, he also possesses the ability to withstand external factors that would impede his growth. In spite of his relatively young age, this millennial has refuted an insurmountable amount of stereotypes associated with the millennial generation.
