Vincent Van Gogh is one of the world’s greatest and most well-known artists, but when he was alive he considered himself to be a complete failure. It was not until after he died that Van Gogh’s paintings received the recognition they deserved. Today he is thought to be the second best Dutch artist, after Rembrandt. Born in 1853, he was one of the biggest artistic influences of the 19th century. The image is set inside ‘bedroom in Arles’ the room’s walls are stamped in bloody handprints. The centre of attention is a decapitated aboriginal man, with blood shooting from his body merging into Van Gogh’s appropriated painting ‘Starry Night’. The man appears to be posing in a very exhausted way. In front of this aboriginal man are two be-headed heads, these heads seem to resemble a European marble-like statues. “This morning I saw the countryside from my window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big,” wrote van Gogh to his brother Theo. This letter was used when he was describing his inspiration for one of his best-known paintings, The Starry Night which was created in 1889. The window that he refers to was in the Saint-Paul asylum in Saint-Rémy, in southern France, where he tried to relax away from his emotional suffering while he kept making art.
It is important to keep in mind that Van Gogh was born exactly one year after his brother, also named Vincent, was stillborn (“Vincent Willem”). This odd situation most certainly led to some of Van Gogh’s mishaps later in his life. Also, Van Gogh’s own mother was an artist, yet she never encouraged art in her children, nor did her or her husband support Van Gogh when he decided to study and practice creative thinking (“Vincent Willem”). Van Gogh’s father was a minister, and he and his siblings grew up in a very religious home, which led to some of Van Gogh’s life choices and also to some of his misfortunes along the way (The Van Gogh Gallery).

Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in the rectory of Zundert in Barbant (Burra). His father was a soft-spoken Dutch clergyman. The only thing Van Gogh got from his father, was the desire to be involved in the family church. Even at an early age, Vincent showed artistic talent but neither he nor his parents imagined that painting would take him where it did later in life. One of his first jobs came at the age of sixteen, as an art dealer’s assistant. He went to work for Goupil and Company, an art gallery where an uncle had been working for some time. Three of his father’s brothers were art dealers, and he was christened after the most distinguished of his uncles, who was manager of the Hague branch of the famous Goupil Galleries (Meier-Graefe). His parents were poor, so his rich uncle offered to take him ...
This type of painting uses linseed oil as a binder in the paint. Oil paint is very slow at drying which allows the artist to come back the next day to make corrections to the painting without putting fresh paint on the canvas. Giving the artist more control over these types of paintings than others. Most of the artists that use oil paints use thin layers of what is called glaze to build up the color on the painting. Oil paintings also make it easier to add texture to the art work as well. In the Starry Night, Vincent Van Gogh uses oil paints to create this master piece.
