Gender Roles in the Business of Starbucks The observation discussed in this paper occurred at the Eastside Starbucks between a white man and white woman sitting on the same side of the table. Both were dressed in a professional manner wearing slacks and button-down shirts. The man had on a wedding band while the woman wore glasses. This Starbucks is relatively small there are about 5-6 tables along the wall with the counter on the opposite wall with a small seating area at the front of the coffee shop. Since they were both on their cell phones and looking at a shared screen while sitting on the same side of the table I concluded that they were in a conference call. During the conference call the woman nodded her head in agreement with whomever the conference call was with more frequently than the man. The woman also continually bit her lip and pushed her lips together throughout the meeting. The man would tap his fingers together and occasionally twirls his wedding band around his finger. Although, this could just be them getting rid of notifications, there were a few occasions where they were muting their line so that they could talk to one another with out the person on the other end of the conference call hearing. The appearing to be confused when pressing buttons on the cell phone and muting the calls to make side comments to the other person relates to expression rules. (At Starbucks, the employees who take orders and make coffee are known as Baristas). There was also a significant difference in demeanor of the Baristas in the morning. They seemed most focused in the earlier hours of the day, I also noticed that the baristas seem the most energetic during the morning rush. They get orders completed faster and do not talk amongst themselves like they do in the evenings. The Starbucks was the most crowded in the morning, the line of customers stretched to the door.

To support his claim he describes his life at J. Walter Thomas Advertising and explains how life was “full of so much meaningless activity”; he also describes his experience working at Starbucks and tells the reader how it forever changed his life (Gill 205). Gill’s purpose is to state that an affluent life doesn’t always make people happy in order to persuade people to focus more on pursuing happiness rather than obtaining money.

Starbucks recognizes its employees for much of its success. This is due mostly to maintenance of a great and proven work environment for all employees. The company does not have a formal organizational chart; sot employees are permitted by management to make decisions without a management referral. Moreover, management trust and stands behind the decision of the employees and it is this that allows for employees to thinks for themselves as a part of the business, so as to make them feel as a true asset and not as just another employee.

For this organizational analysis, I decided to analyze Starbucks. I chose Starbucks because they are the leading innovators in socially impactful business activities and personally, I love Starbucks coffee! Obviously, the point of this paper is not to talk about how good their products are, but to analyze how their organization is structured and identify potential for improvement. I have never worked at a Starbucks, but I have two friends that work at the location inside of Hy-Vee in Cedar Falls. After countless hours of research, talking to my friends about day-to-day activities, and actually going to Starbucks on numerous occasions over the past few years, I knew this was the organization that I would love to analyze.
For example, I recognize people who came there most of the time with their uniforms like medical employees. In addition, a group of police officers came to the coffee shop to buy coffee. The officers are both male and female and they made conversation in group and they were laughing each other on the back side entrance. I saw few people who sit alone at the table and they are busy on their phone. I think, they were watching movies or just checking their emails. On the other side, more people sit in groups who are 2-4 people and discussing about their homework. There were many people who left the coffee shop when they couldn’t find a sitting. Additionally, there were many groups of people who stood together in the self-service area, in conversation about games with coffee in their hands.
Preliminary Starbucks – one of the fastest growing companies in the US and in the world - has built its position on the market by connecting with its customers, and creating a “third place” beside home and work, where people can relax and enjoy themselves. It was the motto of Starbucks’ owner Howard Schultz and, mostly thanks to his philosophy, the company has become the biggest coffee drink retailer in the world. However, within the new customer satisfaction report, there are shown some concerns, that the company has lost the connection with customers and it must be taken some steps to help Starbucks to go back on the right path regarding customer satisfaction. I will briefly summarize and examine issues facing Starbucks. Starting from there, I will pick the most important issue and study it from different positions.
I based my observation at the Starbucks at the Student Center. I chose here because I had the coffee house and Ring Road to observe. I sat at the tables outside the Starbucks, with my own coffee, facing Ring Road and started my observations. These decisions were influenced by the accessibility of the location since I do not have a way to travel elsewhere.

The organization we chose to audit is Starbucks. As one of the largest coffee chains in the United States, we saw an opportunity to analyze their company and learn from the challenges they face. With a plethora of different communication styles at work within the company it seemed to be a prefect platform for us to base our final project. The first Starbucks opened in 1971 in the historic Pikes Place Market in Seattle, Washington. There is now over 13,000 stores located in the U.S. alone. We’ll be focusing on the individual stores to see what communication styles take place within Starbucks on a day-to-day basis. The coffee shop I decided to do my observation was the well known Starbucks just a couple blocks away. The reason I chose this coffee shop was because of it 's style inside, it attracted me. For example, one side of the wall has a glass top, and the lower part of the wall, made of wood and painted in a bright red color, which was one thing that attracted me and stood out. Outside of the shop people can actually see through the glass wall and get to see what’s happening inside of the coffeeshop. By the entrance you see these two red ceiling lamps which were shaped in a flower bud and these two tall green plants. Once you were in, on the right of the shop there was a counter with food and things to put in your drinks such as milk, sugar, chocolate, etc and the colors and how the food was displayed and served was appealing to my eyes. Behind that counter there was a long table with different electronic devices plugged into the wall. On the middle of the those there is a fridge just for ice and when I turned to the other side and I noticed a big menu on the wall. Further more into the shop, there was an area filled with tables, chairs, and sofas. The tables were in different shapes, one was round and the others rectangular, also there was four bamboo baskets and I looked around and noticed that the walls in that area were decorated with paintings.
