Alice Park’s article, “Stand Up for Yourself”, examines the negative effects of sitting on people’s health. Her article discusses the physiological reasons why sitting for more than eight hours can undo any health benefits gained from exercise (Park, 2014, p.1). However, what Park does not discuss is the effects of prolonged sitting on social or economic factors. When the bodies signals for movement “are drowned out by their own inertia”, the body will not want to move for a prolonged period in time (Park, 2014, p.1). As people get more accustomed to sitting rather than standing during small task, it starts to affect their social life and have psychological effects.

People sit while they eat, sit at work or school, sit when they get home, sit to watch TV, and sit to socialize. Over time, sitting has become a norm in today’s society, as Dr. Jamie Levine mention “standing up is an oddity” (Park, 2014, p.1). Prolonged sitting has the potential to cause psychological effects. People’s brain are an amazing adaptive living organism. Overtime it can be taught what is good and what is bad with a few words or association with pleasant and positive stimulus. In psychology the effects of this is studied with advertisement and commercials. Companies used pleasing images, like a puppy or popular music, to condition their viewers’ brains into associating that pleasant stimulus with their product. Sitting works in the same manner. Sitting can be associated with many things, the biggest is watching television. Overtime, the brain will be conditioned to see sitting as a pleasant thing due to the use of it while talking to friends, watching televisions, or eating food. It has become conditioned in people’s brains that these actions should be done while sitting. Prolonged sitting can have psychological effects due to the conditioning of the brain to link sitting with many acts throughout peoples’
A fresh recruit to a discarded system is Mr. Jaime Escalante. In the film, Stand and Deliver, he had to adapt in his environment in James A. Garfield High School when, without prior notice, he was assigned to teach Mathematics instead of Computer. Quickly, as he set foot in the classroom, he had, most probably, a better discernment in human behavior. The reality of the high school he was employed in, he understood and tried to completely remove the universal gap between a traditional teacher and a disregarded student.
In the popular article title “Yes, sitting too long can kill you, even if you exercise” written by Susan Scutti, the article summarized a study that was published in Annals of Internal Medicine by Dr. Keith Diaz. The article explained how there was a direct relationship between the time one spent sitting and their risk of early mortality. According to the CNN article, The study, REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke, “REGARDS” which was designed to look at why African Americans have a greater risk of stroke then whites. the experiment consisted of 8,000 black and white adults who were 45 years or older.
To really understand someone's point of view, you have to walk in their shoes. People cast blame without knowing the whole truth. Sometimes the truth is that the person blamed is as innocent as a mockingbird. In To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is used to teach us good behaviors such as, being a committed and loving father, treating everyone fairly and equally, and standing behind his beliefs.
Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.” We are All Bystanders by Jason Marsh and Dacher Keltner is an article that reflects on the psychological and social phenomenon that refers to cases in which people do not offer any assistance or help to a victim. Studies say that a person's personality can determine how they react to a bystander situation. In a book called, The Heart of Altruism, author Kristen Monroe writes the altruistic perspective. Altruistic people are strongly connected to other humans and have a concern for the well-being of others. Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief exemplifies the bystander theory through Liesel and
Within every history class, English class, and even some science classes, the art of storytelling is a primary foundation for human communication and understanding. Whether it be through myths – Greek, Roman, Egyptian, you pick – or wives tales or even Grandpa telling his old war stories, stories have power. Now, through technological advancements in the last 150+ years (thank you Thomas Edison for your obsession), we have film as a mode to tell stories. Fictional or not, films tell a story; they have the power to give you not only entertainment but enlightenment too. Through continuing advancements, filmmakers have the ability to challenge and manipulate the power of the story through creative resistance; by exploring other elements of storytelling via film, filmmakers can create dramatically different films from similar ideas by using a multitude of techniques. Films are even used to create social commentary.
Stand-your-ground law is a type of self-defense law that allow an individual to use deadly force if he/she felt that their life is in grave danger. The Controversy behind Stand-your-ground law is often criticized for encouraging violence. Critics claim that the laws lead to a "shoot first, ask questions later" attitude that results in more injuries and deaths than would occur without the law. Stand-your-ground law was passed by the former Florida governor Jeb Bush in 2005. Afterward, many other states have followed mostly the Republican States. The laws expand on the "Castle doctrine," which says that a person is protected under the law to use deadly force in self-defense when his or her property or home is being invaded.
Why is standing up for others important? It is important because it helps people that are in trouble and cannot speak up for themselves. For example, sometimes when people get bullied, they are too scared to stand up for themselves, but if a friend comes along and stands up for that person it becomes better all around. Its worst when someone is being picked on and a by passer just walks by and lets it happen. Or is it wickedest when someone just does not care at all?
Besides their health benefits, exercises also offer social comfort to many people. Moreover, regular exercising and fitness also keep me active. Therefore, I train regularly, and my fitness routine can only be disturbed by other social and professional activities. Fitness and yoga fill me with energy and stamina. This training is also helpful in concentrating, making me alert when serving my patients. The energy I derive from exercises keeps me alert. However, my values and behaviours could also hamper my ability to appreciate the problems of others, including obese people, whom culturally unaware people consider careless and
The stand your ground law is a law that allows people to defend themselves in a suspicious situation somewhere they are legally allowed before having to retreat the area. This law was derived from the Castle Doctrine, which states the person legally residing in that dwelling has a right to protect themselves if someone on or in their residence threatens their livelihood. Florida was the first state of the United States to implement the sand your ground law into their state laws in 2005. Former Florida governor, Jeb Bush, passed the Florida statute to help the citizens protect themselves in the midst of a dangerous situation. This law became a controversial topic when the Trayvon Martin case was the central subject matter of every media outlet
The most effective way to achieve something in our world also happens to be the most difficult to do. The two most effective methods of achieving something is taking or winning. Taking a stand is the most courageous act a person can do because often times they are going against the common belief of the people around them. All great leaders have one thing in common and that is that they are brave enough to take a stand. Taking a stand is more important and has a bigger effect on the world than winning does.
This Land May Be Your Land and My Land but I'll Shoot You If You're on Mine!
Is a play without actors a play? Possibly. However, not all plays would survive without actors- especially actors that contribute to the mise en scene of the play. Neither The Lion King, Sleep No More, nor Miss Saigon would be the masterpieces they are without their ensemble breathing life into the scenes and transforming a script into art. One incredibly unique play, in the case of mise en scene, is The Lion King.
In the book “You’re More Powerful Than You Think: A Citizen’s Guide to Making Change Happen,” Eric Liu, an advisor to President Bill Clinton says, power “is the capacity to ensure that others do as you would want them to do. If that sounds menacing or distasteful, or makes you feel squeamish, I understand. And I invite you to get over it” (Jaffe, 2017). This explains, candidly, what power is all about. It’s something a lot of people want, while a lot of people get uncomfortable towards people who has it.
My first year of junior high, (in our school that was seventh grade) I was not spending all my time trying to be popular like all the other people in my grade.
