Most of the people in all the countries of the world belong to a certain religion. For example, in Australia 77.7% of people follow a certain religious tradition ("Religion", 2017). Therefore, as a healthcare worker, I need not only to know the implication of my personal religious beliefs but also that of the patients. Since, I do not believe in a formal religion, most of the people I encounter have a system of beliefs that is contradictory for me. Even though I do not believe in God, I ascribe value to spirituality. Due to cultural awareness and competence, I have developed certain religious values. I acknowledge the importance of religion and religious education imparted to me and others as it teaches good moral values, including respect for others. Most of the religions also inculcate compassion for the fellow human beings. Therefore, I appreciate the role of religion and always try to respect the people belonging to any religion. I believe that everyone is free to choose any religion, and his or her choice should not be a basis of discrimination and disregard for others. These beliefs and values would help me understand the religious beliefs of others while offering healthcare to them. For example, I can take into consideration the values of the patients of other religious denominations, their gender sensitivity, modesty, and diets. For healthcare providers such as doctors and nurses, it is important to look professional and adhere to the specified uniform. Many patients and their families believe that a smartly dressed doctor is more honest, expert, intelligent, and knowledgeable. Research conducted has shown that while the families consider the professional dressing and style of the doctors a positive sign, they disapprove of the doctors who have piercing and tattoos. The reason for this tendency is that their attire is a part of non-verbal communication, and it creates the first impression and is a core component of establishing trust. ( Johnson 2016) Therefore, I take good care of myself while I appreciate the importance of clothing and personal appearance. Safety principle always govern my choice in fashion; therefore, my professional belief makes me choose a safe fashion style. Becoming culturally sensitive involves not only knowing and learning about the other cultures but also to personally observing the diverse cultures and interacting with the people from different backgrounds. Travelling to different countries enriches our cultural knowledge, promoting a smooth transition from a mono-cultural perspective to a diverse cultural outlook. In foreign countries, one learns to overcome the cultural shock, observe the cultural practices, and experience what it means to be in a different cultural setting. It also helps people observe the political, social, and economic structures of other cultures, broadening their horizons and increasing the cultural competence. I have travelled extensively to many countries, which allowed me to experience them directly. Sometimes, it has helped me understand the views on health and sickness. My exposure to the different cultures will also positively affect my role as a healthcare worker and medical professional. I can put this knowledge to use while dealing with the patients from other countries. Living abroad has helped me appreciate the possible problems and stress one’s feelings while living out of one’s original culture. This event has taught me empathy to take all the possible steps to alleviate the suffering of the people. For example, merely greeting a Hindu patient in his or her mother tongue, appreciating the role of supplications they usually do, and the respecting their rituals and celebration days could not be learned without visiting India and participating in some of the fascinating rituals. Therefore, my beliefs, values, and traditions often define my professional behaviour. Appreciating cultural differences help make the working process more productive and inclusive. I hope to provide my patients with professional services to achieve maximum satisfaction of every group of patients.
