Cultural Awareness: Definition, Purpose and Benefits

As each and every day goes by, diversity is becoming widespread throughout the world. As people are presented with culture, races, and different sexualities that differ from their own they may become uncomfortable. Cultural awareness is important because it can combat this unease. Cultural awareness is defined as the ability to recognize the different beliefs, values, and customs that someone has based on that person's origin. Being culturally aware allows a person to build successful and professional relationships in a diverse environment.

I was also taught that family is extremely important and the time spent with them should be cherished. This mindset is still a part of me today and part of the reason I am in college now. My parents grew up in an age where nice belongings were difficult to come by. The mindset that putting your best effort into everything you do helped them both get into college and obtain successful jobs afterward.
This same mindset also helped me through middle school and high school. I watched many of my friends begin to do drugs and give up on school. My goal was to get into college, thus I gave my best effort into getting respectable grades and maintaining a high GPA. However, this mindset does not just apply to school. I chose to go to this event because I enjoy learning more about people who are not from America. The event was held in the Gold Room in Prospector and began at 4:00 pm and ended at 6:00pm. There were over one hundred people at this event.

During my time at the International Coffee Hour, I met Erin. Erin is an international student from China and grew up in a city called Shijiazhuang. Erin came to UNC Charlotte for our business program. She transferred from the University of Missouri and is a double major in accounting and finance. Erin decided to be an accounting major because once you get your degree and CPA it is fairly easy to get a job.
