Standing Up For Yourself
My first year of junior high, (in our school that was seventh grade) I was not spending all my time trying to be popular like all the other people in my grade. I was just being me how I always had been. One day at I was sitting at the lunch table with a bunch of people I would hang around with sometimes. Some of them were talking about there weekends.
Then my friend Sami said, "Hey guys you wanna know what I did this weekend?"
Everybody was like "yea"
Sami continued on saying, "Well I went to this party with my cousin and we were drinking and they she gave me a couple of joints and from there on I don’t remember the rest of the night, but it was awesome." "I think that I am gonna do this more often
you get a really awesome high of it."
By this time everybody sitting around her was like that is so cool. Everybody was really into what Sami said, and as the days went by they acting almost as if she was a god and they had to follow her everymove.
One day I was talking with my friend Rosie during Lunch when Sami came over. Sami interrupted us saying
"Would either of you guys like to join me outside for a joint?"
I said "No I have homework to do and anyways I have better things to do then kill off my brain cells."
Sami just glared at me for a minute. Then said
"Rosie what about you, Are you still cool or do you wanna be a dweeb like some OTHER people at this table."
So Rosie left.
Later that day during study hall I tried to talk to Sami.
"Hey Sami" I said, "What is up over there?"
"Not much" she replied.
"I really need to talk to you about earlier today in the lunch room."
"What about today?" Sami asked curiously
"Well, about you pressuring Rosie into feeling like she couldn't do what she wanted to do, but like she had to do whatever you want her to do like you are her mother or something. What is up with that?"
"Well you know she really wanted to do it."
"If she did then why did you have to almost force her to go with you. I think you are taking this cool thing a little to far."
Sami snapped back, "I think that you are just jealous cause everyone thinks I am cool now and I am center of attention and your NOT!"
It was my senior year of high school, I was sixteen, getting ready to turn seventeen. It was my senior year of high school. I was not your typical girl wearing makeup everyday and worrying about getting dolled up for school. I did not play sports. Don’t get me wrong, I would get all dolled up if I had something special to do like go to a school dance. I had a part time job at Olive garden because my parents motto was “if you do not play a sport you need to work!” My mom used to say to me “you know Alana back in my time I was not able to work so you are very lucky you're able to work.
“I wouldn’t do a thing like that. Why would I do a thing like that?” she said.
Martin Luther King Jr., one of the most prominent African-American civil rights leaders, said, “man who won't die for something is not fit to live.” In the play Antigone, Sophocles uses Antigone and Haimon’s rebellious characters as they stand up to Kreon’s authority to risk their lives for their own respective beliefs. Similar to the rebellious characters in Antigone, in Chinua Achebe’s novel, Things Fall Apart, Nwoye and Okonkwo disobey authority and voice their own opinions. Achebe and Sophocles use characters who challenge authority to reveal the importance of standing up for one’s beliefs, regardless of the consequences.
Superheroes; they save and protect the world’s people. They courageously stand up and battle against evil, anarchy, injustice, crime, and sin. When the world has nothing else to defend itself, they are the ones who are present with a duty to safeguard everyone. The superheroes you may know, such as: Superman, Batman, Iron Man, etc. all have extraordinary superhuman powers which they use to shield those in need. However, anyone can be a superhero. Throughout history, many people have become like superheroes not because of extraordinary powers, but extraordinary courage, bravery, humanity, and love. Those people made a choice to risk everything they had in order to save another human being. Is it the right thing for a person to stand up and do the right thing?
Child abuse in America is an ongoing problem and something needs to be done. There are approximately one million children abused annually in the United States. (Table 339) Cases of child abuse and neglect are reported every ten seconds, and researchers believe that there’s three times that amount that goes unnoticed. (Child Abuse: Know the Signs and Stop the Violence Against Children.) Something needs to be done for these children who are too weak and too powerless to help themselves.
“There will be no free rides, no excuses. You already have two strikes against you: your name and your complexion. Because of these two strikes, there are some people in this world who will assume that you know less than you do. Math is the great equalizer... When you go for a job, the person giving you that job will not want to hear your problems; ergo, neither do I. You're going to work harder here than you've ever worked anywhere else. And the only thing I ask from you is ganas. Desire.” Ramon Menendez (Stand and Deliver)
Sean said, “Can you believe that it's like he is trying to make you mad to get you in trouble.”
Since ancient times, mankind had been always looking for beauty and proportion in all things. In every era, someone had dedicated his life to find the most excellent method to express Aesthetic through art (Architecture, Book Design, Painting, Music, Design, etc).
The most effective way to achieve something in our world also happens to be the most difficult to do. The two most effective methods of achieving something is taking or winning. Taking a stand is the most courageous act a person can do because often times they are going against the common belief of the people around them. All great leaders have one thing in common and that is that they are brave enough to take a stand. Taking a stand is more important and has a bigger effect on the world than winning does.
David rolled his eyes and snorted. "When don't you think Amanda's up to no good?"
"Didn't you like it?" she asked. And then I started to tell her about it.
The baby kicked again and Krista winced. She adjusted her position on the bed, letting the discomfort subside. After a moment she said, “Tell me again why you would quit?”
The best way to prevent cases such as child abuse at home is for the parents and the children to have family screenings, which will assist in early detection and highlight any potential risks; as well as managing the behavior they may display. According to Kids first, an organization that teaches families way to prevent child abuse, stated that 93% of sexual child abuse happens at the hands of an adult well known to the child. Only 1 in 10 children will report abuse themselves, and the children that keep the abuse a secret will often be the majority of the children that suffer from physiological and social problems, which will most likely follow them to adulthood. Another idea in order to minimize and hopefully prevent sexual child abuse is to stay alert and talk openly with your children about abuse, learn how your child communicates with others and learn all the signs of different child
Parents abuse children using physical or verbal cruelty as discipline. They will have trust difficulties because their caregiver will abuse the child and it will change their outlook and their way they look at life. Future relationships and friendships will be difficult for the child because they will not know how to trust anyone. They also will not know who is trustworthy. Stopping child abuse early, or simply not abusing child at all, can go a long way to improving a child’s quality of life and
A phobia is a variation of an anxiety disorder that is usually triggered by a particular stimulus, which then provokes an extreme or possibly irrational fear response. It is unclear as to exactly how phobias arise in individuals, but it is likely that psychological aspects have a role to play. In this essay, I will discuss different psychological factors, specifically behavioural elements, which contribute to the acquisition of phobias and how important and universal these are in terms of explaining how some individuals develop such disorders.
