Four hundred years from now, when children listlessly shuffle into a murky classroom and haul their textbooks - or whatever the 25th century equivalent of a textbook is - from their backpacks to begin the study of our civilization, they’re going to learn about how we expressed ourselves and our feelings about the world in which we lived through these weird little things called “memes”. A meme, for those of you who don’t know how to access any website but this one, is a comical picture or short video which either reflects or influences popular culture and politics. Every couple of weeks, a new image will emerge and spawn hundreds upon thousands of memes created by people who have mastered the art of adding text to a picture. For the most part, …show more content…
Roll Safe - http://runt-of-the-web.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/broke.png “A meme can’t stop being funny if it was never funny to begin with”. Cue a picture of actor Kayode Ewumi pointing to his temple, the image which has inspired one of the most popular memes of 2017 thus far. Like so many recent memes, the anchor image of the Roll Safe meme is a still shot, in this case taken from Ewumi’s web series Hood Documentary. In general, the meme portrays Ewumi having come up with what he believes to be a fool-proof plan to get around a common problem. In one particularly popular Roll Safe meme, for example, Ewumi grins and points to his temple with the caption “You can’t get cheated on if you’re not in a relationship”. The meme’s continued popularity comes not from the love of the public, but from meme creators who are fond of its simple paint by numbers formula. Evil Kermit - http://i1.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/facebook/001/191/128/039.jpg Speaking of painting by numbers, here comes the Evil Kermit meme, which has been plaguing our timelines for what seems like an …show more content…
The image which inspired the Cocaine, Marijuana, Beer meme first appeared in a 2014 Vice article entitled “Here’s What Your Eyes Look Like When You Take Different Drugs”. The image shows the eyes of various thrillseekers after snorting cocaine, smoking marijuana, and drinking beer. In spring of 2017, a Twitter user added a fourth set of eyes to the image to show, in jest, what a woman’s pupils looks like during sex, and it just took off from there. Immediately people began adding new sets of eyes to the image, one, for example, showing a squinting Josh Peck with the caption “Megan”. The meme has been criticized for what many believe to be the trivializing of drug abuse, an accusation that is actually pretty difficult to argue
The wonderful show SpongeBob Square pants is a good show about a sponge who lives at the bottom of the ocean in the bikini bottom. SpongeBob lives with his pet snail Gary in a pineapple. He works at the Krusty Krab for Mr. Krabs and he loves it more than anything. He makes sure he gets there every day on time not a minute late. Because he has the most important job there to fix the krabby patties. The krabby patties are so good fishes from all over the ocean come to eat them, but nobody loves them more than SpongeBob. But the krusty krab isn’t the only restaurant it’s a place right across the street called the chum bucket owned by Plankton and he hates Mr. Krabs and SpongeBob and everything the krusty krab stands for. He hates them because he gets no
... the drug but have made a big controversy about not using the drug at all. Causing a big dramatic scene that just makes the problem even worse for the person involved in the situation, though problems can’t always be solved to a certain extent. It’s the people trying to help change the problem and not promote people to the Hall of Shame.
Shows such as Spongebob Squarepants don’t generate attention disorders like ADHD, but they do contribute to shorter attention spans. This is especially unhealthy for younger people. Watching cartoons makes it harder to employ executive function in the brain, the process used to complete tasks. Viewing TV programming with a still developing brain is hurtful for the younger generations. Fast-paced programs over-stimulate young kids’ brains.
Upon the completion of my high school career I was faced with the sudden realization that I was growing up and on the verge of becoming independent. A few months prior, I had applied to Montana State and received my acceptance letter. The future was before me and my ambitions were truly limitless. That is, until the fact set in that I was going to have to pay for this education that I desired. I knew that with my busy schedule, I would be unable to make enough money while only working a few hours here and there. I was beginning to lose sight of hope. Then one day I talked to my counsellor about what I could do and he pointed me towards dozens of scholarships that I could apply for. The exigence or purpose
In this generation memes are really popular. I asked my parents what they thought memes were and they had no clue what I was talking about. So for those who do not know what a meme is, here we go. A meme is a humorous picture or video with text that spreads rapidly through various social media accounts. Memes are also very powerful and can affect a person, or event either good or bad. According to memgenerator.net, Futurama Fry is the second most popular.
Marijuana has been used by people over many centuries for medical uses. It is a natural pain killer used today as a recreational drug by people all over the world. According to Noel Merino in, “Introduction to Gateway Drugs: Opposing Viewpoints”, “a drug is something other than food intended to affect the structure or function of the body”. Marijuana is a very controversial drug and has been outlawed in many countries for its affect on the function of the body. “Effects may involve hallucinations, impaired judgment, and mood swings.” Describes the effects of marijuana in “Marijuana” Current Issues Macmillian social science library. During the past century Marijuana has been legal, made illegal, strictly enforced, decriminalized, protested, used illegally by millions of people, protested for both views, legalized for medical uses, and the debate continues. People claim that marijuana is not harmful and should be made legal; others protest that it is a dangerous drug that leads to other serious problems personally, socially, and politically. Marijuana has been to cause physical effects such as breathing problems due to the inhalation of smoke if that is the method being used to take the drug. In “Marijuana is Dangerous for Teens”, by Joseph Califano he states that, “nine percent of those who use marijuana become dependent on it”, although it is not a big number it is because that is not the biggest problem with marijuana. Along with all of the health problems that marijuana use causes it also opens up the debate over the gateway theory.
Social media is a system or application that enables users to create, construct, and share content as well as participate in social networking. In Tom Standage Writing on the Wall, Standage argues that social media is not new, but rather social media has been around for centuries. The book inspects and analyzes how social media has been a central element in human society ever since the development of language. He continues to show how social media hasn’t changed much but the technology we use to convey those messages have. In addition to the changes in technology, he looks at the similarities those technologies have with our current ones. He starts by looking at the Romans and their wax tablet and scrolls, as they were being used similarly
“people recognize the idea that ‘the internet never forgets,’ while at the same time also recognize that to be funny or cool sometimes you have to push the boundaries of what is socially acceptable,” said Mohabeer
Ecstasy alone makes people biased towards ecstasy without even doing the research necessary to judge it. There are some 500,000 regular users of the drug Ecstasy in the United Kingdom alone. (lec.org/DrugSearch/Documents.Ecstasy.html, p.1) It can't be all that bad, can it?

"Marijuana is the second most popular drug after alcohol in the country today. So many people smoke marijuana that the numbers alone seem to legitimize and condone its presence in people's lives. Yet, even in moderation marijuana is not 'safe.' Somehow this information had not filtered down to people who think they are smoking a fairly innocuous drug. Our society perpetuates the myths about pot being a fun, harmless, recreational drug. These myths feed into people's denial of marijuana's problems" (Baum 6). However, the abuse of marijuana is a problem. It is not only a personal problem, but also more importantly a social problem. Throughout history marijuana has been used to serve various purposes in many different cultures. The purposes have changed over time to fit in with the current lifestyles. The cultivation of the marijuana plant in the United States began as far back as the Jamestown settlers around the year 1611. At that time the main focus was on survival rather than for psychoactive purposes. Medicinal uses of marijuana eventually changed to enjoyment manipulation. Beginning in the 1960s marijuana use saw a reemergence with the rebellious youth, and the "hippie movement." This evolved into increased use among the older population as well. This trend continues to this day. Marijuana use can be termed abuse. Today the debate over marijuana is a major controversy that affects our society as a whole. During the 60's it was easy to depict marijuana as a beneficial and completely harmless substance because there was not enough scientific research done during this time (Grolier Wellness Encyclopedia). Today we know that the levels of THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana called tetrahydr...
Marilyn Monroe once said, “...it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.” This applies to my life in pretty much everything I do, because I would much rather have people notice me (even if they don’t like what they see) than be just another face in the crowd. Even if someone hates me, at least it means that they respect me enough to see that there’s something worth hating. It’s much easier to enjoy life when I’m not trying far too hard not to seem ridiculous.
Digital communication has evolved in such a rapid time. Some say that it is bad, others say it is good, and other say it can be good and bad. In Gerald Graff’s and Cathy Birkenstein’s book, They Say/I say, they have a chapter that talks about digital communication. They talk about the pros and cons on it as well. Digital communication is destroying young user’s ability to communicate but it also is helping spread viral memes quickly, and bringing people together.
The purpose of this essay is to develop a further understanding of the impact of social media in regards to the political debate. By looking at the topic of social media and the use of rhetoric in response to politics in the 21st century, a deeper understanding of the issue can be established. Social media has become a primary source for the discussion of politics by the average citizen whether through the sharing of articles, “memes”, advertisements or personal expository statements. As a result, large sums of information and ideas are spread rapidly across a wide variety of subjects. However, much of this information may not be accurate and could be misinterpreted.
Every day we meet a lot of people have seen their behavior, listen to what they say, think about them, try to understand them. We feel that we not only see what color eyes and hair of a person, tall or not, thin or full, but also sad to him or fun, smart or stupid it, solid or not and so on. Over the past decade, social media has seen growth to the point where it is reflects in our daily lives and even the lives of those who choose not to use it. Anywhere we go online, there are always buttons to click so that you can share something on Facebook or pin it to your Pinterest account.
