Introduction
Spirituality
People learn and seek in their lives through spiritual understanding. Spirituality and religion are different where religion is the institutionalized form of spirituality. Spiritual understanding of life results in understanding one’s own worth and value. Spirituality is more of without guidance which helps in developing inner strength and optimism in people. This was due to the spiritual gap between patients and mental health professionals. Mental health professionals were less spiritual as compared to the general population at that time.
In the past two decades there has been enormous research on spirituality and mental health. David B Larson and Jeffrey S Levin were the instigators to who explored spirituality in medical field. Since then many researches occurred in the field but did not show positive relationship between spirituality and mental health. Currently there is extensive research of spirituality and mental health to identify the influence of spirituality on various diseases as well as to help mental health professionals to develop skills for better understanding of spiritual factors which influence the mental health.

Integration of spirituality and spiritual resources into treatment of mental illness as it could play a role in promoting role and maintaining good mental health. There is a need for new methodology which could measure spirituality in various cultures and traditions and integration of theological perspectives into mental health. The influence of spirituality in mental health can be strengthened only through empirical research.
