Only 17.1% of special needs adults are employed in the United States of America (Persons with a Disability: Labor Force Characteristics Summary). Special needs is the individual requirement of a person with a disadvantaged background or a mental, emotional, or physical disability or a high risk developing disorder. Becoming involved in the community has many benefits for anyone but especially people with special needs because it leads the to become more independent, will make them feel needed, and will give them something to look forward to. A disability is anything that affects vision, movement, thinking, remembering, learning, communicating, hearing, mental health, or social relationships (Merriam-Webster). There are a variety of disabilities are classified within each of those categories. Disabilities can occur during any stage of life. Each disability has its own characteristics in the way that the specific disability affects any and every person who has been diagnosed with the disability. In the same aspect each specific disability might affect each person with that specific disability differently. There will be no two people who have the same disability that are affected in the same way. Some things that need to be considered by each individual includes their health condition, body structure, body functions, functional limitations, activity in completing a task, activity limitations, participation, participation restrictions, environmental factors, and personal factors. Some of the different types of disabilities include ADD/ ADHA, Autism, blindness, Cerebral Palsy, Deaf-Blindness, Deafness and Hearing Loss, Developmental Delay, Down Syndrome, Emotional Disturbance, Epilepsy, Intellectual Disabilities, Learning Disabilities, Severe or Multiple Disabilities, Speech and Language Impairments, and a Traumatic Brain …show more content…
Getting involved can be anything from getting a job, using their creative skills, volunteering, or joining a club. There are many different types of jobs that anyone that is special needs can obtain with very little difficulty. One of the less obvious ways to get involved in a community is to do something creative such as make visual art, have fun dancing, or even playing an instrument. Volunteering is a great option to become more involved in the community because it benefits both the individual and the community. Some general volunteering options that would be a good option for people with special needs include helping out at a church, library, pervious schools, a retirement home, a food bank, animal shelter, or cleaning up around the community. Some different places or groups that would be beneficial to become involved in include a community center, a day care center, theater, museum, an art gallery, a sports team, or activities in the park. It is important for each individual to find something that makes them happy so that they can spend time doing whatever they decide. City Workshop, Richard Lavoie is able to simulate several of the difficulties that a student with a learning disability has to face at school. Some of the difficulties experienced by the students are intrinsic to the disability itself, but many other difficulties are directly related with the emotions that the student experiences when attending a class, and as a result of his or her interactions with teachers and classmates. Both the United States law and the education system, have the opportunity to make a huge difference in the learning experience of every student with disability. There are also different types of disabilities such as a physical or mental condition that limits a person 's movements, senses, or activities. I choose a sensory impairment, Diabetic Retinopathy which is one of the types of visual impairments that people may happen to get. You also have four other types of visual impairments, cataracts, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, and retrolental fibroplasia that you can also get. Diabetic Retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affect the eyes.

The word disability means something different to anyone you ask. Officially, having a developmental disability means the disability appears before someone turns 22 years old and causes a chronic life long or extended duration impairment. These disabilities, which may not be seen, can be physical, intellectual, neurological, psychiatric (or others), and the disability has a strong need for services or special care. What do we do with children with disabilities in the public school? Do we include them in the general education class with the “regular” learning population or do we separate them to learn in a special environment more suited to their needs? The problem is many people have argued what is most effective, full inclusion where students with all ranges of disabilities are included in regular education classes for the entire day, or partial inclusion where children spend part of their day in a regular education setting and the rest of the day in a special education or resource class for the opportunity to work in a smaller group setting on specific needs. There are many disorders or syndromes that cause people to behave and act differently than others. Out of all these syndromes, I picked one of them. This is a very rare syndrome and an estimate of 4% of children in the U.S. have it. It is known as the translocation down syndrome. Translocation down syndrome is a type of down syndrome caused by rearranged chromosome material. A child with translocation down syndrome has 3 #21 chromosomes instead of the two pairs. Here,one of the chromosomes is attached to another and the extra chromosome is what causes the health problems is what causes the health problems associated with the disorder known as down syndrome.

There are numerous careers related to special needs, all of which require different schooling, training, mentorships, and other types of preparation. Any type of job working with children with mental and physical disabilities can be challenging but also very rewarding when one sees the child improve (Tyrer, 2007). Different types of careers affect special needs children in different ways. For example a teacher will help them thrive in school, while other careers may help the kids improve at home or in a public setting. Special needs workers should be creative, flexible, and personable to be able to meet the needs of the child and also provide useful information for the child’s parents. It is important for one to at least complete minimal required training so one will be fully prepared to work with a child with any type of delay.
