Only 17.1% of special needs adults are employed in the United States of America (Persons with a Disability: Labor Force Characteristics Summary). Special needs is the individual requirement of a person with a disadvantaged background or a mental, emotional, or physical disability or a high risk developing disorder. Becoming involved in the community has many benefits for anyone but especially people with special needs because it leads the to become more independent, will make them feel needed, and will give them something to look forward to. There are many ways that special needs adults can get involved within the community, such as finding a job, joining different organizations or groups, or even volunteering for something they enjoy. A disability is anything that affects vision, movement, thinking, remembering, learning, communicating, hearing, mental health, or social relationships (Merriam-Webster). There are a variety of disabilities are classified within each of those categories. Disabilities can occur during any stage of life. Each disability has its own characteristics in the way that the specific disability affects any and every person who has been diagnosed with the disability. In the same aspect each specific disability might affect each person with that specific disability differently. There will be no two people who have the same disability that are affected in the same way. Some things that need to be considered by each individual includes their health condition, body structure, body functions, functional limitations, activity in completing a task, activity limitations, participation, participation restrictions, environmental factors, and personal factors. Some of the different types of disabilities include ADD/ ADHA, Autism, blindness, Cerebral Palsy, Deaf-Blindness, Deafness and Hearing Loss, Developmental Delay, Down Syndrome, Emotional Disturbance, Epilepsy, Intellectual Disabilities, Learning Disabilities, Severe or Multiple Disabilities, Speech and Language Impairments, and a Traumatic Brain …show more content…

Getting involved can be anything from getting a job, using their creative skills, volunteering, or joining a club. There are many different types of jobs that anyone that is special needs can obtain with very little difficulty. One of the less obvious ways to get involved in a community is to do something creative such as make visual art, have fun dancing, or even playing an instrument. Volunteering is a great option to become more involved in the community because it benefits both the individual and the community. Some general volunteering options that would be a good option for people with special needs include helping out at a church, library, pervious schools, a retirement home, a food bank, animal shelter, or cleaning up around the community. Some different places or groups that would be beneficial to become involved in include a community center, a day care center, theater, museum, an art gallery, a sports team, or activities in the park. It is important for each individual to find something that makes them happy so that they can spend time doing whatever they decide. There is something for anyone if there is some thought put into what they might enjoy spending their time
