Volunteering has been committed for years, no matter the social statue, people have attributed time to impact others. Volunteerism is when a person uses their own time or talents for the greater good in their community, “Today, nearly one in four Americans, an estimated 64.3 million people, have served as volunteers.” (Rosenburg) The internet has strongly help contribute to these numbers with advertising, allowing people to find opportunities in their community. In times of great despair, we need volunteers. To not only help the afflicted, but to provide strong hearted comfort. However, volunteering does not have to be done during times of harsh adversity. It can be done in ways such as volunteering to clean your church, or working at a soup …show more content…
You don’t always have the opportunity to benefit yourself as I would at this organization. I would like to not only join this organization to not only further my knowledge of the medical field, but to learn to care for patients in a family centered way as they do at NMMC. I can meet patients, learn about them and their lives and make them feel at home during their stay. From watching doctors performing procedures, attending seminars, and learning how the hospital works I would benefit greatly. Being around these skilled professionals will also give me a range of resources for when I am in the medical field myself. This would potentially give me more opportunities to find a job and start my own career. Also to get advice and insight on what I can do to better myself, and prepare. Doing this I can also give back to society by making a difference in someone’s life. I plan to not only benefit myself, but to generate an impact on patients, and comfort them through whatever challenged time they may be going through. I chose this organization in hope make a difference in others’ lives and my own as well. Which is very achievable in every organization with the need of volunteers, and with the will to help which I
In l997 the author Lynn Steirer was a student at Northampton County area Community College when she wrote “When Volunteerism Isn’t Normal”. It was published in the New York Times in a forum of current issues opposite the editorial page. (515).
volunteering is a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task. In this report i will talk about the different types of volunteering in the:
Volunteering can be gratifying and everyone should experience giving time to others without expecting anything in return. I have some history with The Excel Center in Kokomo, I am a recent graduate from there and have spent time tutoring when I can, to help other students succeed. After leaving there, I considered a future career within the walls of the school, I have even been told on numerous occasions that I am more than welcomed back after I finish my degree. Once I knew I had to volunteer in a human service field, I knew I wanted to give The Excel Center a shot right away, knowing this was a guaranteed place to be challenged and given an honest opinion of my work.
There are always ways to help people in the medical industry and volunteering can help me decide how I want to contribute. Volunteering can help me figure out if I actually want to work in the medical industry or not. If I don’t want a job in this industry I can still learn other trades. The wide variety of work a hospital offers can give a person experience in another industry. Hospital technology can give knowledge on engineering.
Volunteering is productive. It also gives a satisfying feeling, knowing that one is helping people in need. Last year, in the process of getting confirmed in the Catholic Church, this writer preformed charity work such as serving food to homeless people at the Dorothy Day House. At first it seemed that doing charity work would be boring, but it was actually fun, helped people, and made a difference in their lives.
Over the years I have been very involved in my community and school. Being a part of something helps to define who you are as a person and the principles and values you hold as important. A personal experience that helps to show my talents and skills can be illustrated by my trip to Italy last April with the MHS Language Department.
Being able to be a part of an organization sets an individual apart and is able to learn more than just the normal. They are able to critically think together in a group of like-minded people to come up with solutions to provide quality of care. Not only will this allow the individual to grow personally, but also
Specifically, volunteering can combat and help aid in the treatment of mental disorders. To emphasize, volunteering has been found to significantly lower levels of depression (Dietz et al.). When a person focuses on others it is easier to forget our own personal struggles and lower mental disorders. In addition, it creates a sense of purpose in the world. To demonstrate, the “social integration theory” or “role theory” provide an explanation that people involved in community service feel more life satisfaction and purpose (Dietz et al.). Having a sense of belonging and purpose helps overall psychological well being. Lastly, volunteering increases self-confidence. For instance, volunteering is attached to a “natural sense of accomplishment” (Segal and Robinson). Thus, volunteerism has a strong connection to an increase in confidence and self-discovery. Overall, volunteerism increases a person’s mental state of mind in many ways, but also
Still some people move away from the thought of volunteering at all. They think that it is beneath them, they find it demeaning. Think giving up your valuable time to help someone out. "I don’t get paid I don’t work", they say. My time is precious, I barely have enough time for me and my family, I
Volunteering enables an individual to make a positive impact on his or her community, while empowering the individual to better his or her life. This summer, I had the opportunity to volunteer at many diverse locations. From the hospital to the local library, I truly value my experience and treasure everything it has thought me. Volunteering lets us experience and learn things that we otherwise would not have learned; volunteering opens doors for us that we may not have been able to open before. Volunteering provides us with guidance and tolerance which we may use in the future to aid us in our decisions. At first glance, volunteering may seem to only benefit those who are helped, but on a deeper level, one can realize that volunteering benefits the volunteer as much as, if not more than, those who are helped. Not only does volunteering make a difference in one’s community, but it also helps the volunteer become a smarter, happier, friendlier and more caring individual.
This experience of volunteering will allow me to gather a deeper understanding of the medical field, pave the way for my future goals, and teach me something new about people, cooperation, and compassion. As with most things, it is better to have a basic understanding of something prior to delving directly into it. Take for example a student taking a test; it is better for the student to have taken a class regarding the test before taking it. Similarly, it is highly beneficial to me to volunteer at a medical center before attempting to dive straight into becoming a neurologist without any previous knowledge. Furthermore, volunteering at BSWMC-Irving is the first stepping stone in reaching that dream, as it would lay the foundation to me becoming a true neurologist.
Though, the concept of community service is not very new its importance has developed in the past few years. There are thousands of organizations all over the world that engage and hold millions of young people all through the world. People of all age groups, with a maximum number of youth are involved in the process of community service. Community-based organizations include; social service organizations, non-profit providers and associations that engage both young people as well adults as volunteers. The process is beneficial both for the individuals as well as the society. Without community service people would not know the meaning of charity and giving back. Community service can be defined as a service that is performed for the benefit of the public. Community service is not a responsibly or an obligation; it is a commitment. A person must want to do it with good intentions and not because they are being forced to do so. Basically, community service is a way for a person to give back to a community in which they live.
A reflection of my volunteering experience can be summarized in two words: Life-changing. It is hard to explain the feelings that occur when you involve yourself in selfless acts for your community, such as volunteering. There is a feeling in your heart that you cannot ignore, maybe it is the happiness you feel or the overflow of emotions in helping others. In other words, it is a feeling in which you want to share with others. Maybe with a friend, maybe a classmate, maybe a family member, or maybe even a stranger. Either way, spreading how life-changing volunteering can be is a great start to making a positive change in your community by simply by involving others.
Volunteering benefits a person by building connections with peers, improving family life, expanding career skills, overcoming self doubt, having lasting life impressions, and creating new opportunities. Just a small act can make a huge difference in someone’s life. The future is dependent on the individual person and the people they surround themselves with. Just a few hours will change both the volunteer’s life and the one that is in need.
"I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver."
