Enrolling in this course seemed to be challenging and out of reach for me at the beginning, but as we completed our first few lectures and assignments I knew that I would undoubtedly improve my reading, speaking, and analyzation skills in Spanish. It came time for creating our first presentation, which would be presented in front of the entire class, without note cards all from memory. I never really had to read, analyze, and summarize an article in any of my previous courses, especially in Spanish. While taking Spanish classes in high school, I was just handed a worksheet with specific instructions to prepare a PowerPoint and note cards about casual and nonchallenging things. Even though I was captain of my speech team for my junior and senior year of high school, I have never been the best at giving presentations in front of my peers individually. Doing presentations in English became more of a usual and easy task for me, but doing them in Spanish has been very rare. After creating my summary and gained further understanding of the article I …show more content…
The fact that I don’t speak Spanish daily as I should, puts me at a struggle when trying to say things. Sometimes I want to say things but I end up saying the opposite of what I meant. A sentence where I did this was: “al igual ah dijo también que iba a contratar a diez mil refugiados um porque no estaba desacuerdo .... estaba en desacuerdo con la orden ejecutiva.” Since I didn’t take the time to think of what I was going to say or maybe practice it, even more, I said the opposite of what I was aiming to emit. My friends that don’t speak or understand Spanish say that when I am speaking in Spanish I speak way too fast, which is something that I have noticed of myself as I learn to more comfortably speak it. It’s a fast-paced language making it more probable to mistaken words that can completely change the meaning of what I am trying to
I was told by teachers that the way I wrote was the way I spoke and it made me feel kind of bad knowing that some of my words wouldn’t sound or be spell correctly. Even when I’m at work I have to think of what I say before I say it because I would mostly say it as a “slang” word and not even think I said anything the wrong way . I should work on it but it would be
The increase and changing demography in the United State today, with the disparities in the health status of people from different cultural backgrounds has been a challenge for health care professionals to consider cultural diversity as a priority. It is impossible for nurses and other healthcare professionals to learn and understand theses diversity in culture, but using other approaches like an interpreter is very helpful for both nurses and patients. In this paper of a culturally appropriate care planning, I will be discussing on the Hispanic American culture because, I had come across a lot of them in my career as a nurse. The Hispanic are very diverse in terms of communication and communities and include countries like Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, South and Central America, and some of them speak and write English very well, some speaks but can’t write while some can’t communicate in English at all but Spanish.
The course, Chicano Studies 50, introduced me to many topics that I never was taught in high school. The differences between high school and college is that in college students are available to many courses and recourses to further develop their knowledge in their culture. Professor Montoya teaches his students in a deeper concept of how Chicanos ideals were developed in comparison to my previous course Chicano Studies 10. The course showed the class brief experiences of farmworker’s struggles and to movements Mexican-Americans decided to accomplish to provided better life for those who were undocumented and for them as well. Culture was introduced in a small description, but like Professor Montoya expressed “… would be impossible with a subject
“Culture is a cluster of intangibles and tangible aspects of life passed down from generation to generation.”(cite) More importantly, culture is define as the way of life of a group of people who share these same values and beliefs, therefore, we will check the Hispanic culture. The U.S. Census Bureau defines Hispanic or Latino as mutual inhabitants in the United States who are of Latin American or Spanish origin. Latinos has become a larger proportion of the U.S. population, there is a greater need for social work education to offer culturally sensitive training to social work students (Furman, Bender, Lewis, & Shears, 2006; Iglehart & Becerra, 1995). A Hispanic woman, Marcela Hede voices that, “Being Hispanic is mainly defined by my language
I was surprised to learn that people can communicate about their communication. This term is called metacommunication and it is something we all do every day. We communicate about our communication by sayings like, “I do not know how to say this, but…,” or by rolling our eyes after making a comment to indicate sarcasm. I use metacommunication to help me clarify or reinforce what I am saying. I find it very useful when I am trying to convey the importance of my message. I may gesture with my hands or simply state, “This is very important.” Metacommunication helps us convey our messages by adding meaning that our primary message was lacking.
Mexican Americans have quickly risen to become the majority population in the United States. The Mexican American population has grown so much due to the mass migrations they make from Mexico into the U.S. About 33.7 million Hispanics of Mexican origin reside in the U.S. as of 2012 (Pew Hispanic Center, 2013). Mexican Americans are considered the largest Hispanic origin population, making up two thirds of the whole Hispanic population to reside in the United States. As of 2010, 32 million Hispanics are Mexican American, with 11.7 million immigrants born in Mexico and 22.3 million being born in the U.S. (Pew Hispanic Center, 2013). Today, there are about 52% of Hispanics born in the U.S that have a least
Colombians are the populace of the Republic of Colombia, a multiethnic nation in South America, and the individuals who relate to the Colombian social as well as national character. When I first entered this class, I already knew that it wasn’t going to be easy just because I 'm not good with putting things into words and explaining myself with proper grammar. I can honestly say English 101 has really inspired me to be a better writer. This class affected me in a lot of ways it showed me that writing takes time and you can 't expect a paper to be great without any revising or editing. That has always been a mistake of mine, I would tend to free write a lot it seemed to be the only way I could get my thoughts processed on a paper. I would forget periods, commas and misspell words without even noticing. I never cared much for punctuation, but once I got into this class I knew it was much needed. The topics we wrote on were not just any random topics which in a way made it more interesting to write about things that are actually important and things our generation should be informed about.
Up until this year, before taking the class intermediate composition, I thought I was a terrible writer. I was right. Writing isn’t something that I enjoy doing, nor am I good at. Writing is difficult for me because I’m not very good at explaining things in a professional manner, that can be easily well written. While writing you are expected to make little to no mistakes, which is not something I’m great at. I am so much better at explaining things with verbal words rather than written words. I had not taken any extra writing classes before this year rather than the mandatory ones. Like I had stated before, I hate writing, with a passion. I dread writing anything, especially an essay for school, like this one. I’m
Throughout my life I have contributed too many extracurricular activities such as clubs, sports teams, and volunteer groups. However my involvement in my Latinos in Action volunteer group has taught me a plethora of valuable lessons that will forever be engraved in my memory. Latinos in Action is an organization that takes minority groups in local Jr High and High Schools and guides them in going and tutoring local school children that may need extra help. We also contribute a vast of our time doing service projects such as helping at local soup kitchens, Goodwill Stores, organizing food drives, gathering gifts for the less fortunate and helping in the general community. I have participated in the organization for three years now and every
The first framework, the natural support system framework looks at Latino’s specifically. It shows what is important to Latino’s and who they rely on. According to the framework, Latino’s rely a lot on relationships such as family and friends as a support system. They also see their religion and their own cultural practices as a support system and also events that are cultural based. Through this framework, we can start to see how a Latino person relates to others and who they rely on for support. As people and relationships are vital to them, coming to America and losing all that has got to be hard, therefore for Latino’s, it is vital once they get to America and settle in, that they recreate and find new relationships and people to use as
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
One of the most known civilizations that thrived in Mexico was called the Mayans. The Mayans where considered to be pre-Columbian America’s most brilliant civilization. They thrived between 250 and 900 A.D. Thanks to the Mayans we are able to say that we have a calendar and a writing system. They also built cities that functioned as hubs for the surrounding farm towns. A key part of the Mayans was their importance of religion. Their altars were carved with significant dates, histories and elaborate human and divine figures. Just like many civilization the Mayans eventually collapsed in the 10th century. The exact reasons of the collapse are unknown but the most probable reasons are either overpopulation or the damage to the ecological balance.
In Mexican culture, La Llorona folklore is the storytelling that has passed on through generations for many years. Even though, folklores changed by new tellers. Every folklore needed to be analyzed and see how it had changed over years depending on the tellers. For instance, my family had been telling the folktale about “La Llorona” but it has been discovered that there were different versions of La Llorona in different places. The purpose of folklore is to scare children to behave, or not to go to dangerous places, or so many different reasons. This folktale can be considered as teaching morals, or cautionary tales, or familial cultural heritage. This folktale of La Llorona was from Mexico or even from the past in Mexico such as the Aztecs. La Llorona is one of the famous folktale for centuries and there are different stories regarding La Llorona over years.
Making a successful public presentation or speech to an audience was a very big task for me before I joined the public speaking class. I was always frightened and very nervous. Since then I now understand the process of making a speech or a presentation including coming up with a topic and from this topic develop the main points of the speech, research, organize my points, revise them, edit and make a magnificent presentation to any audience. People in the audience might sometimes agree or disagree with my opinion or points, it was therefore necessary to communicate my information clearly to the audience without making any judgments since every person was entitled to a different opinion and views about things.
