When I first entered this class, I already knew that it wasn’t going to be easy just because I 'm not good with putting things into words and explaining myself with proper grammar. I can honestly say English 101 has really inspired me to be a better writer. This class affected me in a lot of ways it showed me that writing takes time and you can 't expect a paper to be great without any revising or editing. That has always been a mistake of mine, I would tend to free write a lot it seemed to be the only way I could get my thoughts processed on a paper. I would forget periods, commas and misspell words without even noticing. I never cared much for punctuation, but once I got into this class I knew it was much needed. The topics we wrote on were not just any random topics which in a way made it more interesting to write about things that are actually important and things our generation should be informed about. I believe it was the second paper, we were assigned that caught my attention on how poor of a writer I was. You had asked us to write about what we thought of America. The topic couldn’t have been more perfect, but once I had turned it in little did I know that just me stating my opinion alone would not get me the grade I want. You left multiple …show more content…
I wrote “Going back to what I said about America being great again when you look at all these speeches together, certain things stand out. These Presidents basically all wanted the same thing even if they were all talking about different things. When it came to Martin Luther King 's speech, he didn’t want America to fear anything he wanted them to be fearless. Reading back over it you had left a comment saying “MARTIN LUTHER KING WAS NOT A PRESIDENT”. Not only did I feel embarrassed but I thought too myself how could I miss something like that, but it goes back to me being careless and not revising my papers
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
This trimester I began the class English 101 with mixed feelings. Depending on the topic and style, I could really enjoy writing. However, there were occasionally times where I just did not feel much inspiration, and consequently, my writing quality was not exactly remarkable. My previous course to English 101 was AP Literature, where I learned how to analyze writing and write powerful papers. Although, to my disadvantage for this class, the teacher was more concerned about content than presentation and grammar technicalities. I learned to create good ideas and responses, and while I did possess the ability to convey them with proficiency, I could not express myself at a college level. Nonetheless, I can happily report that I have acquired these skills throughout English 101, learning to curb my near addiction to prepositional phrases, in addition to halting my use of coordinating conjunctions to begin sentences. I find it pleasing to read and compare my first essay to my latest one, seeing all of the differences and enhancements. My writing has improved through the trials of in-depth analyses and short deadlines, enabling me to perform my best no matter the style or topic. Overcoming the oppositions found in the class and my own
When going through life learning is an everyday occurrence as each day is constantly filled with information that is used throughout the course of your life. Each day we get stronger and stronger in whatever we decide to put our minds to, weather that be academics, sports, our jobs we are constantly learning and growing on a daily basis. This semester I have grown in English as I personally felt that through the English 102 course I have been able to grasp some key concepts and writing techniques that will better me for the future. In this class there was a list of goals and outcomes that the instructor felt would be achievable and the best way to learn throughout the course. In each goal throughout this process I feel like I have improved to some degree but there is other things that I do need to touch up on a bit more to further my writing education outside the classroom.
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
The next paper I wrote was, The Tornado of the Century, it was a descriptive essay and I really focused on finding the small things in my papers to make them correct. I begin to use a website called paper rater and going to Mrs. Thomas for help during the next couple of papers, so I starting narrowing down the grammar mistakes to make my grade better. The third paper I wrote was, How to be a Wingman, I found out in this one that punctuation was everything, because I got some points off for using the wrong punctuation. However, taking out this grammar issues did help my grade in the end. The final paper I wrote was, Success, this was by far my favorite paper, because I knew how to look for grammar errors and punctuation errors. Even though I still took this paper to Mrs. Thomas, she was not marking it up to badly just for the fact that I learned these things over the course of the class.
As I shoved my notebook into my backpack, I heard my writing fellow murmur something about an essay. I wasn’t worried. After taking every Advanced Placement English class my high school offered, I felt equipped to handle a simple essay until received Dr. Carver’s email with the prompt and instructions. I blinked at the screen and rubbed my eyes; thinking I had misread the message, I read it again. I was supposed to have the essay finished in approximately 42 hours, but I had never written a decent essay in less than four days. I was in a state of panic; all of my ideas had evacuated my imagination leaving me with a painful case of writer’s block. To me, most of good writing is good editing and proper editing requires having a window to forget your writing before returning to it: a window that 42 hours just couldn’t provide.
This semester entering English 102 I thought of myself as a bad writer with a lot to say and no idea how to coordinate it or express it. A big reason why I took English stretch composition was to strengthen my writing skills. I feel like I have a better idea of where to put my ideas but I really need help with the technical writing and how to do research papers correctly. My concerns over the semester are not the same as they were at the beginning, they have changed. One of my concerns was that I wouldn’t know how to organize a college essay, but that concern is gone now. A new concern I have this semester is my run on sentences and the punctuation and the lack thereof.
Teaching me and every other student how to more full express themselves in writing and to process what they have read helps them better themselves. Overall I feel I have achieved what was set out for me in this class, to gain a better use of the English language and to express myself in my writing in more constructive ways. I be able to gather the information giving to me by another person or body of work and express my own thoughts and ideas that were generation from the information provided. The ability to clearly communicate my understanding of things in the world makes it easier to get along with others. I had a difficult time with this class, I will not lie, but at the end of it I do feel like I have come out ahead and can express myself in more constructive ways, at least in writing that
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
Writing is an important process which allows you to communicate professionally and academically, in an effective manner. Therefore, when writing it can be applied to any situation. It is best described when you are interacting between persons, places, and things. However, when taking ENG 3010, the main focus in the course was to analyze your academic major or future profession. More importantly, you had to learn how to identify different genres and how to develop your writing skills for particular contexts, purposes, and target audiences. When writing in these various scenarios, I found it to be a bit challenging. I was faced with these challenges only because I was unfamiliar with the writing situations. It was different from any other English course because the approaches suggested that you write for an audience only in your major. But with focusing on my writing skills within my discourse community, I was able to take my writing to a different level. The challenges that I faced became knowledge. It has helped me to ensure that all of my papers have balance and are well organized. As a result, I have developed strong skills with identifying modes of writing and communicating in my discourse community, research skills such as: writing a research proposal, literature review, annotated bibliography and proposing a working thesis. With these skills that I have developed from this course, I will be able to achieve the goals that are needed in my future classes and in the workplace after college.

The first writing assignment I received from high school was the Entrance Exam. Due to being fresh out of middle school, and having a summer full of tranquility, it was no wonder that my essay had its evident flaws. The topic was whether or not the US was holding up with its promises of the “unalienable rights.” After stating what the unalienable rights were, I made an abrupt follow-up with my opinion with the simple statement, “no, America is not fulfilling its promises to its people.” Reading this phrase alone, warrants a quantity of revisions, in addition to this testimony being made directly
Throughout this fall semester, I have learned many things. Before this class, I have never had to buckle down and plan out my writing so tediously. The many outlines, rough drafts, and final drafts have crafted me into a much better writer than I would have ever expected to become. While I have always considered English as one of my strong subjects, through this class I have learned that English has many more components than I originally thought. One of the most substantial of these components is a transitional sentence and through this class and the writing practice it has brought me, I have learned how to properly write them.
Language. It is a sign of who we are and where we come from. As language defines us, so does it unite us, but it can also impose barriers that drive us apart. As our society aggressively pursues globalization, individuals who maintain cultural sensitivity and strive for effective communication despite language barriers will be an increasingly important commodity; individuals who can also pass the gift of adept communication to others will be invaluable. On the eve of my college graduation, the culmination of four years ' immersion in language and communication and the beginning of a lifetime of educating others in these disciplines, I feel increasingly the weight of
To sum up, this English 101 class really teaches me a lot, it include every aspect, teaches me how to reading, how to writing, how to communicate. This class like a treasure box, you can get everything about English from this class. Also, all of my classmates are really friendly and helpful, they do not mind my English is bad, they still communicate with me. They do not mind I bother them and use their time to help me. Professor Cochran is nice and kind person, because my English is bad, something he said to the class is not making sense to me, I have to ask him after class. He also helps me much with my essay, and every time I send email to him, he will answer me really fast. This class is awesome, I love this class. I hope in the future every class I take could teach me a lot like this class.
