First thing I experienced walking into English 101 as a freshman was anxiety and nervousness. Going through high school I was never really good at English and having English 101 as my second class as a freshman was eye opening. I have learned to use proper technique while writing papers, looking through my paper for grammar errors and also that it is always good to ask for help when confused and if you are stuck on a paper. Going through English 101 I have made myself better at writing, by taking my time on my papers, focusing on my papers to make them better, and to look for small errors in my writing to make them better. I made myself better by going over my papers slowly to make them seem like they were better. I focused on grammar errors …show more content…
and punctuation to make my papers better. Over the course of English 101 each paper Mrs. Thomas assigned I got better at things like using commas and going through looking at grammar errors before turning them in. The biggest thing I have done, that I did not do in high school was asking for help on my papers. The first paper I wrote for English 101 was, This I Believe, I made way too many grammar errors on this paper, and after looking at the paper after it was graded I could not believe I made small errors like that in it so I made some changes for my next paper.
The next paper I wrote was, The Tornado of the Century, it was a descriptive essay and I really focused on finding the small things in my papers to make them correct. I begin to use a website called paper rater and going to Mrs. Thomas for help during the next couple of papers, so I starting narrowing down the grammar mistakes to make my grade better. The third paper I wrote was, How to be a Wingman, I found out in this one that punctuation was everything, because I got some points off for using the wrong punctuation. However, taking out this grammar issues did help my grade in the end. The final paper I wrote was, Success, this was by far my favorite paper, because I knew how to look for grammar errors and punctuation errors. Even though I still took this paper to Mrs. Thomas, she was not marking it up to badly just for the fact that I learned these things over the course of the class. Now nearing the end of English 101 I believe that Mrs. Thomas helped me figure out how to write in so many ways. She always believed in me and always made me keep my head on straight while writing these papers. Even though these papers challenged me mentally, they also helped me become a better
writer.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout the English 101 course I have been able to improve as a writer by composing essays
Over the course of five weeks we’ve had to write three essays (four if you include this one). With every essay I’ve written I have improved my writing process. Having the chance to practice my writing skills in English 102 has made me a better all-around writer. From the beginning of this course, I knew I had a few major issues that I needed to overcome to improve my writing. The biggest being my issues with punctuation, specifically comma splices. Comma splices are something that I just can’t seem to wrap my head around. Although I have gotten better at recognizing comma splices they still seem to sneak in to my writing.
Writing papers has been one of my biggest fears as a student. High school English class prepared me for the editing of my essays, for example, grammatical errors, spelling, font errors, and things that were under the category of fixing my paper. I realized that the writing process requires more than just editing, you have to understand that the paper is like a human body, it cannot function if every single part is not effective. I can certainly say that I have improved as a writer a great deal and this portfolio and the final revised drafts of my work certainly can argue for that. English 101 was certainly different from my other English classes; we actually focused on different parts of the writing process in each class instead of wasting our time discussing the same components of the process over and over again. As I reflect on my experiences throughout the semester of English 101 I am aware that I have met very important requirements of writing that I feel were very valuable for me as a student and my writing has improved progressively.
So, my previous experience was a blessing and a curse all in one. Unfortunately this composition course was not one of my first college level courses, it is my last. The feedback that I have received during this course has helped me develop my writing style in a manner that would have proven useful in my previous courses. When reviewing the essays I have written for this course I see a dramatic improvement on my use of punctuation and a slight improvement in the manner that I structure my papers. This change in structure helps the reader follow my thoughts throughout the paper easier. I remember writing my first essay on my writing process. I had to keep moving my paragraphs around to try to make it flow and make sense for the reader, as opposed to seaming to be a jumble of thoughts written down. However, my last paper a critical argument went much smoother for me. Once I got started the process felt as though it went much smoother. I still had some areas that needed to me rearranged but nowhere near as many. And now I feel much better about my ability to write overall. Even though I feel my ability to write has improved, I have noticed several weakness throughout this process also.
I understand the fundamentals of writing much more now than I did when I began Writing 101. Prior to this course I felt confident in my writing skills and I rarely felt as though there was something I didn’t understand about writing. After taking those course however, I feel much more educated on how to write a well written, organized, and professional paper. I have learned multiple tools to enhance my papers that I wasn’t even aware existed prior to finishing Writing 101.
This has been my first semester taking classes with Johnston Community College as a High School student. In my English 111 class I have learned many things that will help me in my future education in high school, and in college. Having a strong foundation in writing is key to success in any subject. Finding my own personal style or way of writing has helped me become a better student, and a better writer. I know that I will carry the skills I have learned with me into my other classes.
Reflection involves stages of critically analysing experiences of practice in order to elucidate, examine, assess, and so inform learning about practice (Reid, 1993). Boyd and Fayles (1983) conceptualised reflective learning as the skills acquired by an individual to internally inspect and investigate an area of concern that is most likely provoked by an experience to generate and explain its meaning in relations of self, which may lead to an outcome of an improved theoretical perception. Both of the definitions give a clear definition to view reflection both as an approach to gain knowledge and as an approach to improve practice (Schutz, 2007). Moreover, Boyd and Fayles (1983) stressed that this improvement may be entirely established on an individual’s personal level of involvement. The evolution of Western philosophy involves the reflection as a notion (Schutz, 2007). In addition, Scutz (2007) suggested that the practice of reflection approaches plays a significant role in educating nursing undergraduates and health care experts to incorporate the skills of reflection in their practice communities as part of their daily practice at work.
Throughout English 101 I have matured as a writer and acquired skills that will prepare me for the next level of writing. I feel immersed in the information I have been taught and understand what it takes to be a good writer. I have revised my papers with the proper use of grammar and composed thought provoking essays. This class has helped me significantly by improving my writing into proper english papers. Without these learning skills it would be impractical for me to convey opinions and thoughts grammatically. In the beginning of the semester my writing was undeveloped which resulted in incomplete papers. I have learned how to successfully methodize and formulate my thoughts for each essay into an understandable format. This semester has
English 100 has also helped me understand the concepts of becoming a great writer. I have learned the correct ways of organizing my ideas using reading and how to correctly put them down on paper. Week five of English 100 will continue to help me learn the final touches of my essay as well as the feedback from our instructor Mrs. Reeves. Becoming a more effective writer is one of my goals as well. As a result from feedback and the lesson learned from this course, I can continue to utilize what I know about writing in my future classes at
English 102 (Writing and Research about Culture) had a main purpose of teaching students how to write research papers. This course also taught how different perspectives and prejudices are based on the language that it uses. Examples of these prejudices included: sexism, ageism, ableism, heterosexism/homophobia, and racism. Since English 102 is a class that focuses on writing, one of the major lessons included learning how to write a proper essay. For example, I learned that the basic outline of an essay included: the intro, body, and conclusion. The parts of the essay then further breaks down into the basic parts of a paragraph. The basic parts of a paragraph include: a transition sentence, a topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence. In this class, I also
Throughout this fall semester, I have learned many things. Before this class, I have never had to buckle down and plan out my writing so tediously. The many outlines, rough drafts, and final drafts have crafted me into a much better writer than I would have ever expected to become. While I have always considered English as one of my strong subjects, through this class I have learned that English has many more components than I originally thought. One of the most substantial of these components is a transitional sentence and through this class and the writing practice it has brought me, I have learned how to properly write them.
I still had the typical grammatical errors and sentence fragments, but there were not as many. I could see my writing skills were improving based on me actually taking the instructors corrections and advice into consideration. When I created my revision memo for this essay, I attempted to finally perfect the common mistakes I had made. Making my sentences a little longer
In the beginning of the semester I was a bit nervous for English 101 because I had not written a paper since my junior year of high school. The first essay was a good start for me since it was on a topic that I could easily relate to which helped me get my toes wet. After that it got a little more challenging since we started on research papers. I learned quickly that it takes quite a bit more time and patience. In high school, we were not required to use library sources, so it was much easier to find sources. I think that is something that I improved on over the course of the semester was finding stronger sources that supported my essays better. To do that, I relied heavily on the Lincoln Land library webpage, so I could utilize my time better.
Throughout the school year, my knowledge of how to be a successful student and person, has skyrocketed. English this class has pushed me, caused great stress, and most importantly, improved my skills in many aspects of life. I realized that the things we learned in class, improve our skills in other classes as well. This semester revealed many weaknesses I face as a student while pushing me to expand my mind. During English One Honors second semester, my reading, writing, and speaking skills, improved tremendously.
I have been studying English for a couple of years, and for sure, I am much better speaker and writer now than I used to be 3 years ago. I am aware that I still have a long way to become fluent, and even though when I acquire fluency, English will continue being my second language. It has been challenging to advance each level, and so far, the hardest skill to improve is the writing part because the grammar structure and the sound of some words are completely different from my native language. Take writing class, for example English 101, certainly helps a lot to move one-step ahead, and that is what happened this semester. I had the opportunity to learn about all different types of essays and tools that will give me the support necessary to
