Reflective Essay
This has been my first semester taking classes with Johnston Community College as a High School student. In my English 111 class I have learned many things that will help me in my future education in high school, and in college. Having a strong foundation in writing is key to success in any subject. Finding my own personal style or way of writing has helped me become a better student, and a better writer. I know that I will carry the skills I have learned with me into my other classes.
My writing process usually begins by me thinking of what I want to write about, whether it’s a reflective, narrative, argumentative-persuasive, compare and contrast, or process analysis paper/essay. Usual finding what I want to write about takes up most of my time. Once I figure that out, I think the this step is the most important to keep in mind while writing. Knowing who your audience is is key to having a successful paper. If you do not, then your paper will not have as big of an effect. This applies to any type of paper you write, and I learned that very quickly. Nest, I would write the rough draft of my paper, this rough draft would just be putting my ideas

together. The rough draft is where I just put down what I want in the paper, and will finalize it after I have finished. Then, I finalize my paper after feedback, and I look at specific things that need to be changed. A very important thing that I learned in this class is to have a work cited if necessary. Making sure the sources you use have credibility, and that you cite them correctly is one of the major things looked at for grading. I also learned that for certain types of papers you use specific citation methods like MLA and APA. Lastly, I proofread my paper in order to catch grammar mistakes that I may have previously missed. I can tell my grammar has improved since the beginning of the course, but I also know I could improve more than I have. The audience you are writing to is a huge part of writing any kind of paper. Personally, I think in an argumentative-persuasive essay knowing your audience is more important than anything else, besides the citations. If you write your paper without keeping your audience in mind then your argument will fail, and it will lose its credibility. When you are writing to younger children, you have to use different types of dictions and comparisons. Otherwise, they will not understand what you are talking about, and your paper is useless. Another example, when you bring in religion because it is your personal view, if your audience is nonreligious then you have hurt your chances of compromise or agreement. Bringing up things like that can only benefit you if your audience already agrees with you. Usually when moral things are mentioned that we disagree with we shut the person who is talking down, and we do not listen to their views. If you do not keep your audience in mind then your argument/paper will backfire on you, and it will not be effective. Johnston Community College (JCC) offers several helpful resources that can be used as a student on campus and online.
For this class specifically, I have used My Writing Labs to help improve my grammar in my papers. Even though it was for a grade, I feel that it has made a drastic change/improvement to my writing. Being able to do it online, on my own time, was also a helpful plus with my busy schedule. My writing labs was the most helpful tool that I was able to use this semester for english 111. The online tools that JCC offers also extends to my math 171 class. We used an online tool called ALEKS, and it has helped me understand precalculus more and more each time I used it. The online tools have been the most helpful resource that I have used from JCC, but above all the My Writing Labs
tool. Overall, I have enjoyed this class, and what I have learned throughout the semester. This class gave me a chance to work on my public speaking and presentation skills. Having that opportunity to work at these skills has helped me have more confidence while presenting to my peers. I have definitely grown from taking this class, and cannot wait to take the next English class at JCC, English 112.
...out homework, which was a huge stress relief. The class also offered how to write the base foundation of any paper, which is significant to become a great writer as well as to write a flawless paper. Also, the group activities allowed us to get closer with our classmates. However, I feel like some of the activities we did were mediocre and ordinary. But it is hard to tell what experience each student received from their high school. Some knew more than others, and I was just more grateful with the education I obtained from high school. I was also not fond of buying the books for the class, when it was not a necessity for class. We did not put much use into the books, and they were relatively expensive. I do recommend the class, especially to incoming freshman. It is a great foundation for legitimate college writing classes. I enjoyed learning from you Mrs. Penwell.
In fact, I began this semester with plans to accomplish skills that would eventually bring me to an understanding of what a great writer is. During the summer I attended an English mini course which proved to be just a quick version of some high school rules on writing, that did not require much thinking or writing tasks, but it did provide an understanding of what was going to be expected in colle...
As a student, I have learned many different skills that I will take with me throughout my journey from this course. We have traversed many different types of writing styles, which any college student, or any person for that
Throughout this course, we had multiple assignments that were aimed at improving us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning. Our weekly craft lessons have introduced us to multiple writing strategies. These strategies have helped turn my papers from elementary papers that were written below my expected grade level to papers more on par with my peers.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout the English 101 course I have been able to improve as a writer by composing essays
In COL 101 I have learned many new things about college. Since this is my first semester at college I did not really know where everything was. This class really helped me to learn new things about myself, including what resources are available to me, what my plan for the future is, and the many changes I have endured during this course.
As the first semester of my sophomore year wraps up, I begin to realize that I have learned a lot in all of my classes. The class that I learned the most from has definitely been my English 111 course. This class have given me so many opportunities to improve my writing skills. With all of the success I’ve had in this class, I believe I will do just fine with writing later in my life.
When I first entered this class, I already knew that it wasn’t going to be easy just because I 'm not good with putting things into words and explaining myself with proper grammar. I can honestly say English 101 has really inspired me to be a better writer. This class affected me in a lot of ways it showed me that writing takes time and you can 't expect a paper to be great without any revising or editing. That has always been a mistake of mine, I would tend to free write a lot it seemed to be the only way I could get my thoughts processed on a paper. I would forget periods, commas and misspell words without even noticing. I never cared much for punctuation, but once I got into this class I knew it was much needed. The topics we wrote on were not just any random topics which in a way made it more interesting to write about things that are actually important and things our generation should be informed about.
When going through life learning is an everyday occurrence as each day is constantly filled with information that is used throughout the course of your life. Each day we get stronger and stronger in whatever we decide to put our minds to, weather that be academics, sports, our jobs we are constantly learning and growing on a daily basis. This semester I have grown in English as I personally felt that through the English 102 course I have been able to grasp some key concepts and writing techniques that will better me for the future. In this class there was a list of goals and outcomes that the instructor felt would be achievable and the best way to learn throughout the course. In each goal throughout this process I feel like I have improved to some degree but there is other things that I do need to touch up on a bit more to further my writing education outside the classroom.
Although I know there is still much to improve on in my writing, I feel as though I have made tremendous strides for my first semester. I have grown as a writer, and I believe I have the potential to be a great writer. Throughout my many years left here at The College of New Rochelle, I will continue to work hard so that my final year here at the college I can look back at my writings from freshman year to see my improvement. Writing 101 has boosted my confidence and has made me a better writer today. I will take this confidence along with determination to my writing 102 class, and I hope the professor will continue the molding process that Professor smart has started.
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
Throughout this fall semester, I have learned many things. Before this class, I have never had to buckle down and plan out my writing so tediously. The many outlines, rough drafts, and final drafts have crafted me into a much better writer than I would have ever expected to become. While I have always considered English as one of my strong subjects, through this class I have learned that English has many more components than I originally thought. One of the most substantial of these components is a transitional sentence and through this class and the writing practice it has brought me, I have learned how to properly write them.
In summary, I had an enjoyable time in my first college English class. I pushed myself as diligently as I could and learned much more than I thought I would. In addition to, my strengths grew stronger and my weaknesses improved as well. I acknowledge I still have some techniques and skills to work on; however, I am willing to put the time in and cannot wait to take English in the future. Writing is an everlasting skill that will be an enormous asset to me; in addition to my future classes, and my career as
This class has helped me realize my strengths and weaknesses in literature. This has allowed me to grow and realize that I am a work in progress. I am confident that by the end of this class my big issues in writing will be improved. Each assignment in this class is helping grow and is making me into the writer I know I can be.
