Review of Related Literature
The world is constantly changing and the ways we function in school, home and work are also changing. The speed of technology has developed and evolved dramatically that is why it brought a new style of communication.
Communication nowadays is really different from the way people communicate before. The movement of Web 2.0 plus the existence of technology has really improved that paved its way to different and new researches and studies about social media as a new communication tool. This chapter will focus on social media specifically social networking sites and its line to Overseas Filipino Workers and their families.
2.1 What is Social Media?
According to Merriam- Webster Dictionary Online, Social Media pertains to electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, messages, file and other content.
The word Social Media refers to the use of web- based and mobile technologies to turn communication into an interactive dialogue. Social media takes on different types including magazines, internet forum, weblogs, social blogs, microblogging, wikis, photographs, video and more. As the world develops and takes part in the social media revolution, Skype, Viber, Yahoo Messenger, Myspace, Twitter, Facebook, etc. are now on the move in delivering message (Baruah, 2012).

3. Apps- You can download Skype from the market in the internet for free. It is convenient for it provides access even if you are not in front of your laptop. If you are tired of bringing laptops, you can just take your smart phone and make a free call.
4. No missing a special event- Since Skype exists, someone abroad can join you just like he or she is just there joining you on that occasion. It might not be in person yet the presence is still there.
5. No lengthy emails- You don’t need to invest on typing long electronic mails for voice mail is already present.
6. Keeps you together¬- This is the main point. Even you are far away from home or loved ones, you can still manage to talk with them and continue the communication line between the relationship existing.
Social media can be defined as web sites and other online means of communication that are used by large groups of people to share information and to develop social and professional contacts: Many businesses are utilizing social media to generate sales (Dictionary.com, n.p.).
Skype has a solid commercial viability since it’s introduction into the market because of the free calls between its users. Skype`s is one of the most popular paid services for communication it givers member the ability to make regular landlines and mobile phones from anywhere in the world. Currently, social media is the most popular method of communicating and interacting with others. It is a methodology to new media as it changes and evolves with our needs and expectations. Social media has evolved and adapted to become a huge part of our personal and professional lives.

Whereas the word social media itself defines the meaning of, social of communication. Which then not only provides you information but allowing you to interact while it provides you with information. Social media is a form of online communication channels devoted to society input, intercommunication, and cooperation. In social media, people can talk and interact without restriction, exchange and debate information with each other about their lives by using many different combinations of the words, personal multimedia, photos, and videos. Also, in social media, individulsa and groups can create, edit, comment on, and engage in personal conversations. There are numerous types of social media, for example, wikis, blogs, social network site, micro blogging services, and sites sharing media. At the beginning, social media was limited to a few networks sites, for instance, Bulletin Board System that allows people to communicate with each other and post a comment. Today, social media has transformed from ineffective sites to more useful and effective websites, for example, Facebook, and MySpace. Some companies are using social media to achieve their goals which is attracting more customers to company website. The way that each site functions may differ; for example, Facebook is used to keep in touch with friends, whereas YouTube is used to share videos with others. However, any websites or applications that allow the user to interact with other users are still considered social media. Firstly, it is very common for people to believe that social media has had a negative impact on the use of language by teenagers.

People use social media for networking, education, and entertainment. Some of today’s popular social media sites include Facebook, twitter, pinterest, instagram, vine, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Facebook is used as a basic social media site. People can share pictures, videos, and “status updates” to let people know how they are doing or exciting things going on in that person’s life. Twitter can is similar to Facebook, but updates are limited to one hundred – forty characters. YouTube is a site specifically made to share videos, which is its only function. Vine is used to share 6 second video clips, instagram is a picture sharing website, that just recently allowed sixteen second videos to be shared. LinkedIn is used for employers to find prospective employees and vice versa.

Social media has changed the way that we communicate with others through using these common social networking sites like Face book, Twitter, and Instagram…For that, social media has positively and negatively impacted our life.
