As I look back on my communication class, I feel I was not only having a wonderful and funny class during the whole semester, but also harvested many necessary communication and cooperation skills in each group projects. In the beginning of the semester, I wrote my first evaluation to appraise myself by the nine core small group communication competencies. After 12 weeks, I thought I got some improvements in some aspects. In the following paragraph I will discuss each of the competencies to analysis my effort of becoming an effective team member. Discussion-management competencies include maintain task focus and manage interaction. When a group make a plan or determine some tasks that the group need to finish, an effective group member need to keep in track whether the tasks were processing or not. In the group project, I was always a help-seeker role. Because I was always asked, is there anything I can help the group to keep in track. For example, in the final group project we had a little bit breakdown after our volunteer project. We did not begin our reflection of the volunteer immediately and we did not make our google slides after we did our volunteer activity. Then I asked in our group chat, “Is there anything I can help to do in our slides?” After that, we bean to discuss our slides and entered in our google drive to do the slide. Therefore, in this aspect I did a good job. Most of the time, I was very shy to talk in a group, so manage interaction always is not my part. Moreover, the group communication that set the member by teacher gave me the useful lesson about how to communicate in team and how to reach the team to the goal. However, there was not useful in some part of group communication assignment because of every group didn't apply knowledge from public speaking course in our second year in their presentation, most of them read the script and don't use their own words in the presentation so I cannot understand the content of presentation as expected. Therefore, I think some part of team presentation were not necessary. In a team-oriented setting, everyone contributes to how well the group succeeds overall. You work with fellow members of the group to complete the work that needs to be done. Having the right people in the correct roles is an important factor in measuring the success of a team, where you are united with the other members to complete the main goals. Every group is made up of definite strengths and weaknesses. Our team's 3-5 major strengths necessary to work accordingly consist of Informer, Summarizer, Orienter, Piggy-Backer, and Encourager. One of our strengths as a team is that we get input from everyone involved. Every member of our team is a leader in some way. Part of being a good leader is knowing how important it is to receive the best ideas from each member of their team. We attend group meetings where we discuss any challenges, issues, and problems. At these meetings, we often exchange ideas or brainstorm new ones with each other and come up with the best and most creative team solutions as potential answers to those perceived problems.
Over this past couple of months our group has progressed to a much higher level in outputs as a group and getting to this point wasn 't easy. Our group started off with some “primary tension”, which was a stage that many group members were unfamiliar with roles and had some trust issue in terms of everyone doing their work on time and then we started improving in “group synergy” and outputs for our class.
In order to evaluate my role within the group, it is important to identify what makes a group. A group must firstly consist of more than three members, “Two members have personal relationships; with three or more there is a change in quality” of the personal relationship. Having now completed my group work task, I can look back and reflect upon the process that my group went through to get to the presentation end point.
From the beginning, where we were unfamiliar with each other and became a team, my team and I had started to learn each other name and getting to know each other. Throughout each meeting, we slowly start to feel more comfortable and open minded with each other. Not only are we getting familiar with each other, each meeting that was held we progress of becoming an effective team member, we learn our strengths and weaknesses of everyone. My co-operative behavior and the agreeable behavior I exhibited contributed to the harmony and the success of the group. The co-operation that was exhibited was relative to prompt arrival to meetings, meeting group deadlines, and thorough participation in the discussions and the forums of the group. While I was indeed co-operative for most of the group sessions, I was not afraid to speak my mind. My strongest writing skills were illustrated with the expression and analysis of the benefits and the drawbacks associated with the group project.
Skills and knowledge possessed by every member is also important for a team to become high performance. Although it is among the most important factors, however, it must be coupled with a good working relationship with every team member and good collaboration with every team member. The members who possess the good skills and wide knowledge will be a useful resource to the team if that team member can share their strengths with the other team members and vice versa.
