Small group communication is a part of almost everyone’s lives and learning to communicate effectively in this setting is important. This is especially evident in classrooms, the workplace and even at home. Learning to navigate talking to and in small groups is a key to development of interpersonal communication. For me small group communication has always been a struggle, I have trouble speaking in groups that consist of more than two people. Learning to overcome this has been a struggle but I have been able to with some help. This help consisted of speech classes at Rogue Community College as well as practicing small group communication in multiple classes. This also applies to school as working in small groups is especially important for getting help with tough homework and when working on group projects. Relying on the other people in the group to complete their portion of the assignment can be stressful but with effective communication this will be an easy task and will make the assignments go much smoother. Small group communication even has it place in the home, as the need for settling arguments is often needed and the only way to resolve these arguments is effective small group communication. So with all its uses it is very important to be a competent communicator (Adler, Rosenfeld, Winder, & Proctor, 2016). The purpose of many small group communication settings is problem solving and this is an extremely important part of life in general as many problems tend to come up (Panse, 2016). The first couple months while working as a lifeguard at the Ashland YMCA I had to constantly meet new people and give safety briefings to people and groups wanting to swim in the pool. Occasionally I would get some very rude individuals who would get angry at me for doing my job and it took a long time for me to get used to this kind of environment. Over time and practice I was able to get better at making the safety briefings effective and short, allowing for all the information to be communicated and keeping the people happy and able to swim. The other small group communication setting I had to be in at the YMCA was some meetings to meet new people and practice our safety procedures and skills as well as see what was going on in the building. This was always extremely nerve racking for me even though they were always very easy to attended when I had to talk I was not very clear with my words which was not a good thing when being introduced to a group of new lifeguards who are trying to get used to a new settings. Once again the only way I was able to get used to this was through time and practice. In my classes I am constantly asked to present a subject or ask the teacher for help. As I planed to take this class, I thought this course would be like all other general education courses. I believed that it would be of little use to me. However, after attending the first class, my view has changed completely. I applied each and every theory to my life.
Key to any group is the communication of its members. Realizing that we would be working together for a full quarter, the team members were quick to exchange cell phone numbers and email addresses. The cell phone numbers were key as texting proved to be the most efficient method to ask and answer quick questions from other group members while we were on the go and dealing with other aspects of our lives.

People tend to have different ideas of what constitutes good communication. It is important to define communication and ways to build effective communication within teams, in order to have a successful team output. Some people think of communication solely as speaking, but it should be stressed that up to 90% of communication can be listening to fellow team members, and only 10 % talking (Lay, 2008). There are different aspects of effective communication that should be discussed by the group when it is initially formed. In order for teams to be successful, they should define how they will communicate with each other, and define the tasks that will set out by the team.
“Role conflict can arises when these expectations about how to play a role or set of roles are inconsistent in some way” (Losh, pg. 89). Role conflict is a type of social conflict caused from an individual being forced to take on separate and incompatible roles. Role conflicts usually occur when an individual becomes torn between separate roles for different organizations or groups or within an organization, when an individual is asked to perform multiple roles in the same group. An employee with both work and management roles in a department, for example, assumes the conflicting roles of the supervisor and co-worker. Many feel as though most role conflicts occur because of multiple obligations to different groups role conflicts can also occur within a one organization. When individuals have various conflicting responsibilities role conflicts tend to cause friction and frustration depending of the personality of the individual. We are forcing our employees to basically handle 2-3 positions in 1 to make the client satisfied. The intention of the discussion remained vague throughout out the meeting as there failure in the communication system. The group members did not seem prepared for the discussion. Based on the fact that as at 800 CST there were only two members of the team who had spoken of the issues that were relevant to the discussion, the group members were scantly prepared. It is clear that everyone did participate equally in the discussion.
Clearly, communication plays a significant role in every aspect of our life. Communication is the simply act of conveying information from one person to another by using voice (verbally), gesture or body language (nonverbally), books or magazines (written), pictures (visually). The better communication skills that one has is the better the information could be transferred and received. The ability to convey information successfully and clearly is a fundamental life skill and should not be underestimated. Additional, effectively communication is the key to solve problems in any situation. With good communication skills, you can absolutely improve your professional life as well as strengthen your social and family relation ship. Indeed, communication allows us to relate and understand each other. “It also provides us with a significant frame of reference and relational context that sustain our identities.” (Imberti, 2007)
