This video involves the quiet voice, classwork only, only talking to the person in your group, asking and offering help, and humility in collaborative learning. In my classroom, on the first day of the school, I set the ground rules about talking and let my students know up front when it is okay or not okay to talk. Be sure to give them specific guidelines about talking times. I separate the class to "my time" and "your time". During "my time", when I am doing the lesson instruction, giving directions, and addressing the class as a whole group, students should be focused on me, listening, and taking notes as needed. "Your time" refers to student-centered time. During group work, class activities, and class assignments, students are allowed
to talk quietly as long as they get their work completed. There Do not expect that students only will talk about the lesson related topics during the group work. I walk around while students are working and talking to make sure they are doing and talking the classwork only. In my classroom, I am trying to make asking for and giving help a regular practice. I tell my students that you never know what people know or how they can help until you ask. And it will lay the groundwork for future cooperation. However, some students especially the high school boys, they think asking for help is often perceived as a sign of weakness or ignorance, implying that they can’t get their work done on their own. So they are barely to ask for help. Does anyone have better strategies to encourage students ask for help?
I am thankful that I had this experience. What I found in watching the video, was that I need to work on my speaking ability. Fewer giggles, an increased grasp of words, and working on leading students to correct answers through asking the right questions. My strengths included beginning the session by introducing ourselves to each other and creating a welcoming environment. I intentionally worked to invite all the students by name to offer their opinion on the videos and stories. I deliberately incorporated the teaching methods that we were taught that Jesus used, beginning a lesson by first asking what your students already know or believe, then complimenting them on what they knew. Some teachers do not allow any talking during class at all, even when students are just working independently. Students need to be able to collaborate with each other to help each other out and create new ideas. If a student says something that the teacher does not like the teacher can punish the student, an example of this is the case of Bethel v. Fraser; Matthew Fraser gave a speech to the school that contained offensive and sexual references and then officials at the school then punished him for saying those things (What are the free expression rights of students in public schools under the First Amendment?). The teacher can also send that student to the principal and the punishment could end up being suspension or expulsion. 1. Identical twins come from the same egg that was fertilized and have the same genes. Fraternal twins are born the same time but come from 2 separate fertilized eggs. Nature vs. Nurture basically means that either genes (Nature) or the environment (Nurture) affects the development of people. In regards to identical twins, even though they both come from the same egg and have the same genes, one may get something that the other did not. For example, one twin may get cancer which comes from the parent (genetics) while the other twin has a 0-50% chance of getting cancer. Nurture (environment) does not play a large significant role in genetics in identical twins but only how the twin experiences their own individual lives.
Students have said how they will not talk or ask questions in some teachers’ classrooms because the teacher does not respect their talk or questions. In those classrooms, the students sit silently as the teacher does all the talking and the students only listen. These teachers are missing a great teaching tool, talking. A classroom should be filled with appropriate talking by everyone.
As we all are fully aware, each student is diverse and has special needs when it comes to learning. There are three types of learners: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Visual learners learn best when shown how to do an assignment. They prefer diagrams, pictures, and charts. Simply allowing your class to create flashcards and color coding notes can help these types of learners memorize the information. Our brain organizes information through a process. Creating flow charts will help the brain map out the information from the lesson given. Auditory learners learn best when a teacher presents information by talking to the student. When directions are read aloud, they tend to succeed. Allowing time for students to discuss the material in a group before moving on to the next is beneficial for these types of learners. Kinesthetic learners are learners who excel when engaged in the learning activity. By participating in labs, skits, and presentations, they acquire the information faster. Starting the class with a few warm up activities, next a lecture, then a classroom discussion, and wrapping up with a review will help all types of learning styles. Without the knowledge from psychologists about the different types of learners and their special needs, teachers would not know how to respond to their students who may struggle with the material given.
The deep learning goals that I would establish as my crucial 4Cs would be communication, critical thinking, and problem solving, collaboration, and creativity and imagination. I find these 4Cs very beneficial because they are skills that all students will need to demonstrate in the real world. I believe it is a great idea to implement these 4Cs in high school because they are part of the 21st century learning skills. Every work environment will have these 4Cs implemented so if students master these skills in high school, their chances to get a job and do it well is very likely.
For observing child #1 the whole class watched the video of Kingston. In the first video Kingston was in a exersaucer that had toys all around it on the top. He was wearing a white onesie that had black writing on the front of it. Kingston has short hair that just touches the ears and barely riches the top of her neck it looks like a like blonde/light brown color. He wasn’t a chunky baby he looked like he was in a healthy shape looked to be around 3 or 4 months old.
The Flatiron School is a place where it gives people of all ages and backgrounds an opportunity to explore the wonderful world of code. In 2015, the Flatiron School partnered up with Karlie Kloss in order to launch the “Kode with Karlie” scholarship. There were over 100+ application and there were only 21 girls across the country that can receive free tuition to attend the school’s Introduction to Software Engineering course. This gave an opportunity to young women to have the access to resources where it can help them to become future leaders in the technology industry. In the “60-Minute video” watched in class, there was a study that focused on a questionnaire for a selected group of people of 1981 living in Laguna World Retirement home in California. Researchers wanted to see who (from the retirement home) were still living and how they were still living. The primary focus of the study was people aged 90 years and older. From the beginning, where we were unfamiliar with each other and became a team, my team and I had started to learn each other name and getting to know each other. Throughout each meeting, we slowly start to feel more comfortable and open minded with each other. Not only are we getting familiar with each other, each meeting that was held we progress of becoming an effective team member, we learn our strengths and weaknesses of everyone. During the meetings, we learn many concepts from the textbook, “Communicating in Small Groups: Principles and Practices” by Steven A. Beebe and John T. Masterson. There are slow learners as well as a mixture of fast learners in every classroom. These should be taken into consider and activities should be planned accordingly so that slow learners will not left behind and fast learners will not be bored. There are students with learning difficulties which will affect the teaching learning process. My class is a typical kindergarten group, in that they are very active and learn best by doing. They are a very talkative group and are in constant competition to share their ideas and to have "their turn" to participate. I have some particularly active boys, one of which is on medication for ADHD, another who has autism, but is currently not receiving special services, and a 3rd who came to me from another district's developmentally delayed kindergarten classroom. The majority of my students can sit still for 20-30 minutes but I have 5 boys who have trouble sitting for just 5 minutes without being disruptive or inattentive. I am challenged to constantly engage my students in their learning, rather than "feed" them information.
