In the “60-Minute video” watched in class, there was a study that focused on a questionnaire for a selected group of people of 1981 living in Laguna World Retirement home in California. Researchers wanted to see who (from the retirement home) were still living and how they were still living. The primary focus of the study was people aged 90 years and older. During the study, the results indicate that although genes contribute to longevity, they are not everything. They found that smokers died earlier than their non smokers peers. They also found out that people who exercised as little as 15 minutes a day (45 minutes) outlived those who did not exercise; even exercise as long as 3 hours didn't beat 45 minutes. (social, cognitive, memory, etc) back in 1981, older people increased their longevity. In the study, they also found out that it did not make a difference in longevity for the older adults whether or not they took vitamins. Older participants who drank alcohol (not just red wine) tend to live longer (10-15% reduced death) than older people who did not drink alcohol. In addition, drinking 1-3 cups a day was also beneficial to older people. As one ages, older people who were a little overweight or average weight outlived their peers who were underweight. In addition, high blood pressure for people 90 years and older lowers the risk of dementia. In this study, Dr. Claudia H. Kawas states that the chances of getting dementia doubles every 5 years starting at the age of 65. In order to further investigate this, Kawas studies the brains of the 90+ aged participants who were willing to donate their brains when they die. They observe that although plaques and tangles could be found in brains for people who have dementia, it's not always the case. People could have tangles and plaques and not have dementia and vise versa.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services “adults should get at least two and a half hours (150 minutes) each week of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity ("Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans-)”. Unfortunately, it is estimated that only about 20% of adults are actually exercising the recommended amount ("CBSNews"). This leaves the other 80% of adults at a disadvantage. Inactivity in adults yields even more increased risk than children. Adults who do not exercise and do not get the proper nutrients are more at risk for “high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, stroke, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and cancer ("Why Is It Important? -")”. Unlike children, adults are more aware of these risks, however adults have more reasons to be deterred. The most common reasons adults don’t exercise or eat healthy are that they don’t have time, they feel uncomfortable with their current physical condition, they lack energy due to a poor diet, or they just haven’t developed a habit for exercising ("CBSNews"). As American society has evolved in the past 100 years and technology has increased and improved, so has the life expectancy for individuals. Currently, females can expect to live for 81 years on average, while males can expect to live for 75 years, giving an average life expectancy of 78.3 years (Santrock, 2013, p.536). According to Santrock (2013), “since 1900, improvements in medicine, nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle have increased our life expectancy an average of 30 additional years,” but another important factor is the decreasing infant mortality, allowing a larger population of people, including older adults (p.536). Making good choices in diet, regular exercise, avoiding drugs and alcohol, along with getting enough sleep and maintaining a low and healthy stress level can all increase life expectancy. The video Every 15 Minutes was very touching and moving. It made me rethink everything I had ever thought of parting in college and in high school. However i am very lucky to go the school i got to, it is very small and people are less likely to throw crazy parties that involve drugs and alcohol. That does not mean that they can’t either, anyone can have access to alcohol if the parents/guardians have it in the house; most adults figure that teens are responsible enough to know better than steal the alcohol and drink it. The Ted Talk video that I selected was “When caregiving comes your way” spoken by Pamela Nelson, who is “not a speaker”, but an artist. My primary reason for picking this topic was to basically to get a heads up of what I have to look forward to later in life. The speaker also gave a total of 12 tips of being a care giver. Some of them were, “What you do repeatedly has great power to change you… for better or for worse. You become what you do, laugh with each other, exercise, and follow pause/breathe as you move from task to task. There are right more, but those are just some of favorites.
The third thing I am taking away from this class is the importance of being physically active, a factor that plays an important role in longevity and decreases the risk of premature deaths in people. Furthermore, studies strongly support the theory that physical activities play a significant role in physical activity and all-cause mortality, with people who were physically active being less likely to die throughout the follow-up study period (Fahey, Insel, & Roth 2013). The book also went on to explain that based on the evidence collected, 2.5 hours or 150 minutes of physical activity weekly are appropriate in lessening the all-cause mortality (p. 10).
As human beings we can not stop aging. It is in our genes to be born, live a long life, and die when we reach old age. However, there are a group of regions that have been reported to have the longest-lived people. In 2004, Dan Buettner teamed up with National Geographic and hired the world’s best longevity researchers to identify pockets around the world where people lived measurably better. They found five regions known as “Blue Zones”, places where people reach ages over 100. The people inhabiting the Blue Zones share common lifestyle characteristics that contribute to their longevity. These characteristics were called the “Power 9 Principles” and included diet, physical fitness, mental health, and social and environmental factors.
There exists various lifestyles and behaviours, ranging from amount of nutrition intake, mental well-being, to the amount of physical activity engaged individually. Weighing the abundance of factors, this essay primarily aims to focus on the aspect of physical activity in relevance to how it possibly affects one's lifestyle. By cross-referencing to other lifestyles and behaviours, this essay will also demonstrate the importance of physical activity in possibly alleviating the issues raised pertaining to other lifestyles as well. Throughout this essay, there will be frequent references to the socio-ecological framework in examining the aforementioned factors.
