I often try to visualize my leadership skills and my ability to lead groups as a professional school counselor. The video offered a lot of techniques and information a beginner school counselor could use in their counseling program. One of the most important lessons I learned from the video is preparation. It’s important for school counselors to conduct needs assessments, interview students and ask students want kind of groups they want and/or need. As we have learned through our courses and learning materials, gaining trust and feeling comfortable is very important in a group setting. Group counseling is a viable new option emerging in the school setting. It can be effective and cost-effective for the schooling system by addressing a larger number of students and can be used to address a multitude of topics that children often face. One benefit of group counseling in the school setting is that it teaches children important socializing skills with their peers, as students often learn best from each other (Pérusse, 2009). It provides support, assists with emotional and problem-solving skills, and empowers children to be help each other as well as receive help from their peers (Thompson, 2012). The group setting may be perceived as less threatening, it helps bridge the gap in trust for children by providing a safe environment in which children can connect with others, and it allows for interactions that builds on social skills and the development of empathy for others (Thompson, 2012).
I chose the movie clip entitled “King Kong”. It’s from the movie “Training Day” starring Denzel Washington. Training Day is a movie that follows a corrupted detective’s day to day mischief as he schools a rookie cop. Training Day depicts a product of the matchup between screenwriter David Ayer, who grew up in South Central Los Angeles, and director Antoine Fuqua, who grew up on the rough side of Pittsburgh. Both Ayer and Fuqua are highly familiar with the highly intensified relationship between police and criminals.
While he was nervous to land in the unknown ambiance of a Catholic school in Versailles, this time he was excited to know better his classmates during Booth’s Leadership Orientation Retreat (LOR). His past taught him how to trust his ability to positively contribute in a group’s life. And the low rope course summed up quite how he will positively influence Booth’s community. As always, he started by taking a step back and evaluating the group’s potential by debating the different outcomes with his teammates. He then suggested a strategy that made everyone contribute in the way they wanted to without losing sight of the “race”. While he exchanges perspectives with others easily given his multicultural background, Othmane is confident enough in his ability to positively influence a group of people to avoid overselling achievements. The Instructional leadership team meeting took place on November 15, 2017. The people in the meeting were: cooperating teacher; Amber Merrick, field supervisor; Melba Foster, and teacher candidate, Aide K Soto. The meeting started with acknowledgments by Aide K Soto to recognize Miss. Merrick for her support, expertise, and gentleness. Miss. Soto reflected on her last experiences including; first teaching performance, meetings with colleagues, relationships with students, and interactions with parents. In the areas of strengths, Miss. Soto recognized that being bilingual aid her to communicate with Spanish speaking parents. Relating to areas of improvement, Miss. Soto needs to learn more about school activities
He has been a leader since he was in college he started by explaining a story that he touched a young women’s life without even knowing it. He shares a simple story of how one day he was a leader and was not even aware of it. He explains that on that specific day he stood out because he was wearing a silly hat. He was rallying up for his specific cause and was making his rounds during new student registration. At the time, he had a bucket of lollipops, which he was handing out. He stopped in front of a young lady who was with her parents and was ready to go back home and not go through the whole college experience she was fearful of not being ready to embrace being in college and away from her parents.

The deep learning goals that I would establish as my crucial 4Cs would be communication, critical thinking, and problem solving, collaboration, and creativity and imagination. I find these 4Cs very beneficial because they are skills that all students will need to demonstrate in the real world. I believe it is a great idea to implement these 4Cs in high school because they are part of the 21st century learning skills. Every work environment will have these 4Cs implemented so if students master these skills in high school, their chances to get a job and do it well is very likely.
Forming a counseling group may seem simple, but it’s not. A “major issue in putting a group together is screening it for potential members” (Gladding, pg. 212). The reason it can be a complicated task to complete is because members are not always volunteers. Screening members for a “group counseling session, is a three step process” (Gladding, pg. 212). We’ll discuss how these steps are an important component of having a successful group.
After completing the group task of preparing a presentation on, transferring individual facilitation skills into a group work setting I will critically reflect upon my own participation. I will evaluate my self-awareness while working in the group, as well as those around me. The way that I personally dealt with any issues that arose within the group and how that affected the group dynamics. I will also briefly discuss the roles in which each member of the group took and how role allocation affected, the group dynamics and the working relationships. Finally I will evaluate my work having discussed it with my fellow group members.
Through the process of this class I have been able to reflect and analyze how I am as a leader as well as a co-leader in a group setting. I believe throughout this process of being part of a group as a member and leader has help me further define the roles that I will play in group counseling in the future. The evolution that I am seeing are an abundance of growth in areas that I thought I was already comfortable in such as being an active listener and co-leading. I see that there are more to becoming a powerful leader and facilitator. There are various aspects of becoming a well rounded group leader as learning the skills to endure especially building your endurance. Also, being able to take risks, being competent and confidence in your ability to lead a group of any sorts. Moreover, I have found that my communication style has shifted especially learning about the process in which you communicate your informal introduction as well as the lingo that is being used as a counselor. At the beginning of the school year, the counselors had a scope and sequence they followed with the areas of; transitions, character and diversity, personal safety/wellness, and careers. The scope and sequence is modeled after the WCSCM’s Academic Standards for School Counseling covering the three domains of academic, personal/social, and career development. The standards help answer the question, “How are students different as a result of the school counseling program.” After each description of a lessons plans, was an explanation of each content standard which correlated with the lesson. While at my internships, I assisted with lesson planning and facilitating guidance lessons on careers, transitions or Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), as well as, groups on character development, new student groups, and diversity. The WCSCM is completely embedded in the counseling programs at both of the districts I worked
In reflection on my learning experience in the group class, I have gained clarity on what sorts of competencies of facilitating group therapy, as well as in what areas social workers and students tend to feel most strong in my practice. Regarding my specific gains in competencies, I feel that I learned the most and was most likely to gain specific group facilitating competencies at the weekly class. Learning in group class is taught me the tools to use to work with groups therapy, communities and also with individuals through the process of changes. In today’s society, the definition of leadership is ever-changing and is always being improved. As a leader, my mission is to treat everyone equally and give them the respect they deserve. This semester was very challenging, but my leadership skills have improved. As a leader, my roles play a significant part in the lives of my constituents.
