Sleeping disorders are a very common thing that people face every day. A sleeping disorder is when a person is unable to sleep or unable to stay asleep when they have the chance to do so. There are many things that impact a person through out the day, causing sleeping disorders but the two most common are stress and medical problems. Stress is so common in adults and college students preventing them from being able to fall asleep and getting the right amount of sleep they need each night. Medical problems such as sleep apnea and night terrors also do the same thing and are not curable. This is not good because many people cannot perform a normal day without the right amount of sleep the night before. Stress is the biggest factor for sleeping disorders. A lot of students have trouble sleeping at night because of stress. Their workload, financial worries, and self-esteem give them stress through out the day keeping them up at night when they are trying to sleep. In a study done by Chen, Lee, Rogers, and Wuertz (2013), 103 female college students sleeping patterns were studied in relation to stress. It was found that most of them experienced three nights with bad sleep a week and 68% of them were classified as insomniacs (p. 854). Because of this the female’s who participated also reported …show more content…
Since stress and sleep apnea are reasons behind sleep terrors, all three of them have similar affects such as daytime tiredness preventing the child from being fully alert during school, and other activities they participate in (“Sleep Terrors,” 2014). There is not a cure for night terrors but things that can be done to reduce them. Making sure the person goes to sleep stress-free will make the night terrors happen less while the person is sleeping. Another way is to make sure the child has a very relaxed routine before going to bed such as reading a book (“Sleep Terrors,”
Lorenzo 'Shakes' Carcaterra was a boy from Hell’s Kitchen, New York, in the 1960’s. Shakes is of Italian decent and lives with his father and mother in a small apartment. Lorenzo’s father worked long hours for little pay and quickly angered and used violence to control the household. Shakes witnessed the physical and emotional abuse of his mother. He never confronted his father, but always tried to play the peacekeeper between the two. Shakes mother was not fluent in English and had a hard time connecting to the community and her son. The trauma that Shakes went through because of the domestic violence shaped his psychological and social development. Respect and friendship are things that Shakes does not take for granted and would do anything in his power to always keep these two things. Shakes was a resilient kid and sought social support from three boys: Thomas "Tommy" Marcano, Michael Sullivan, John Reilly and various other men in his community.
While points, claims, and statistics may be found within all of the sources used for the research, the sheer amount of referenced studies and works within the “Sleep-Wake” paper lends weight to it’s usefulness as a reliable source. One of the otherfactor of sleep and its affect within the college community. Three sources varying in criteria and usefulness were found that related to this subject and were studied. sources, “College Students try to Cheat Sleep Needs”, a college newspaper, offers basic facts and elementary assumptions such that could be found within any biology textbook or encyclopedia. These references are to such things as sleep cycles and sub stages and the general consequences of an out of balance sleep cycle. The study from the Biological Rhythm Research writers, however, hints at previous studies and findings that “several factors, such as social and academic demands, part-time jobs, [...] affect the sleep-wake cycle of college students.” but then only states the findings of a particular study, and does so in...

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a disorder that is characterized by failure to exhibit muscle paralysis or atonia during REM sleep. Along with lack of muscle atonia, patients with RBD display behaviors of “acting out” their dreams, which can be harmful to themselves or others around them (Gagnon, Postuma, Mazza & Montplaisir, 2006, p. 425). It has been reported that the dreams are usually very vivid nightmares or close to them and are usually violent, which are expressed through running, punching, kicking, and more injurious behavior (Paparrigopoulos, 2005, p. 294). In 1986 Schenck and his colleagues recognized RBD as a clinical disorder and then in 1990 it was included into the “International Classification of Sleep Disorders” (Gagnon et al., 2006, p. 425).
Sleep is a part of daily routine that is vital for a person to be able to function adequately throughout the day. Without a sufficient amount of sleep, or problems during sleep, a person could have a tougher time trying to focus and operate throughout the course of the day. There are two major categories of sleep disorders: dyssomnias and parasomnias.
The sleep study was limited somewhat by a reduced total sleep time seen and of note there was no supine sleep sampled. In the non-supine sleep seen, there was a moderate degree of obstructive sleep apnoea with an AHI of 16 events/hr which has significantly worse in REM sleep.
Ken was seen today now 18 months into therapy for his moderate degree obstructive sleep apnoea. He is doing very well and has persisted with his nasal mask and he is no longer noticing any mouth breathing. He is using his machine seven hours a night and his residual AHI of 0.8 events/hr is suggesting complete control of his obstructive sleep apnoea. There is a high mask leak indice which he believes is more so from his mask than mouth and this seems to have resolved with tightening of the straps.
Sleep problems among individuals could either be behavioral or physical. Behavioral causes are tied to mood disorders, stress, and anxiety. Physical causes are tied to chronic illness or sleep apnea. In certain instances, however, there can be a combination of both. ` Among the most common physical causes are sleep-disordered breathing. This affects the respiratory pattern, especially since it obstructs the upper airway. It includes hypoventilation, apneas, respiratory-related arousals, as well as hypopneas. Sleep-disordered breathing signs include sleep apnea, mouth breathing, and snoring. For this include poorly controlled asthma, restless legs, and a high BMI (Gerber, 2014). Obstructive sleep apnea is also categorized as a major cause as
“Sleep is a state of physical inactivity and mental rest in which conscious awareness, thought, and voluntary movement cease and intermittent dreaming takes place” (Thompson, 2015). Sleeping is an important part of everyone’s day. Many health issues can be solved by sleeping more. Colleges seem to be designed for sleep deprivation. Demanding classes, social issues and work are all competing for a college student’s time. Universities are filled with college kids sleeping on couches and other various places around campus. It has become such a large issue that the many schools are giving “nap lessons” (Pope 2012). It affects our stress levels and motivation (Saeed 2015). There are four stages of sleep, followed by REM, or rapid eye movement sleep (What is Sleep?,2007). Stage one sleep is very light and can be easily disrupted. Stage two sleep, eye movement stops and brain waves become slower.Stage three produces very slow brain waves, called delta waves.
Spencer Rathus states, sleep terrors happen during the deepest sleep, whereas, nightmares occur usually in the morning hours and during a light sleep (Rathus 2011). A majority of sleep terrors are commonly found in childhood or the beginning state of adolescence and disappears usually when they reach the late period of adolescence (El Shakankiry, 2011). The main cause of these sleep terrors are stress, moving to a new house or neighborhood, stress associated with school, or even a stressful home life (El Shakankiry 2011). Signs a child may be having these are; waking up with an accelerated heart rate, not being able to talk clearly once waking up, and repeatedly hitting something while sleeping (El Shakankiry, 2011). After having these night terrors a child may fear going to bed due to having another sleep terror. I know when I had these I absolutely dreaded bedtime and rarely received a pleasurable night’s sleep since I was constantly worried I would have another night terror. I remember I always waited until my father awaken for work at three in the morning and snuck over to my parents’ room to sleep with her owing to the fact that I felt safe if I was in her room instead of by
A survey was done to find out that “stress might be getting in the way of sleep”. The survey was towards young adults who received less than the required amount of sleep, which is seven to nine hours of sleep a night. These adults received roughly 6.7 hours of sleep a night. A majority of the group reported that stress caused them to not be able to get a good nights rest. They would lie on their bed, wide-awake and have their minds running constantly thinking and
While not life threatening, sleep paralysis can potentially trigger issues such as fear of sleeping, which in turn can lead to many sleep-related disorders. Sleep disorders are some of the most common health problems people suffer from but are also the most frequently looked over disorders. One of the most common sleep disorders is insomnia, which is the inability to fall asleep or the inability to stay asleep. Nearly ⅓ of the population suffers from insomnia. This can spiral into disorders and sleeping habits much worse than the original sleep paralysis and can have a negative impact on a person's everyday
The inability to get sleep, get good quality of sleep, or even stay asleep is known as insomnia. There are many causes of insomnia, both biological and environmental factors. Some of the psychological causes are mood and anxiety, past experiences, or your sleep environment. Some of the physiological causes are pain, neurological disorders, and conditions associated with difficult in breathing. Almost half of the world’s population is affected with insomnia. People with a genetic predisposition are mostly likely to suffer from insomnia, however, habits and other environmental factors relate to nurture as well.

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of sleep on academic performance and levels of stress. Total of 10 undergraduate students completed 10 questions questionnaire and their GPAs were obtained through Florida Atlantic University registrar office. It is a quantitative-based research study to provide the following indication of students sleep patterns sand how is stress can affect a student academic performance and to serve as a means of addressing some of the deficiencies in the literature. Data were analyzed using a bivariate analysis, principal component is an exposed and non-exposed study. The results were consistent a common sleep problem with few in college students but wasn’t a significant gap to that negative affect their performance.
