Skill, Ability and Technique in Fitness
Both skill and technique are learnt and developed, whereas ability is
innate. Because skill and technique are learnt, they are dependent on
practice to be able to progress. As ability is innate, you are born
with specific abilities, which will help you to develop skills and
techniques. For example, if you are of average height, have good
coordination and have an abundance of fast-twitch fibres in your legs
then you have the ability to become a sprinter. Although ability is
said to be innate, research has shown that some abilities can be
enhanced, especially in early childhood. However, innate abilities are
needed to reach the highest levels in sport.
There are 3 types of skill:
Cognitive - involves thought processes
Perceptual - involves interpretation of information
Motor - involves movement
The relationship between skill, ability and technique can be defined
with the equation:
SKILL = ABILITY + TECHNIQUE
The other components of fitness are: power, speed, muscular endurance,
mobility, cardio-vascular endurance, co- ordination, local muscular
endurance anaerobic endurance, and reaction time and body composition.
Each different sport will require all theses different components of
fitness to be able to perform in their sport. Some sports will require
different or more than others. Components of fitness are important
because without them a performer would not be able to perform their

athletes overall ability. The idea that skill equals ability plus
technique is the perfect way to describe how to be able to achieve a
particular skill. However there are a number of different aspects
which come into consideration when performing a skill and being
successful at that skill. Skills can be enhanced easily through
training, as long as the athlete's technique, ability and the type of
skill that is being trained have all been taken into account, before
setting up a training program
Overall skill is developed by having good ability and having technique
that suits your body and mind, with a thought out training programs to
suit you.
When you train hard enough you can master or finesse a skill, therefore several people don't require training. Specific people are born with genetic enhancements that assist them with the skill and grants them an upper hand. David Epstein believes that genetics assist with the activity and does all of the work(Epstein,7). Malcom Gladwell believes that training pays off, moreover that if you train hard for plenty of hours you could surpass a prodigy(Gladwell,11). In Gladwell's writing Outliers, he talks about facts on how if you train for 10k hours you can master a skill. In Epstein's writing Sports Gene it revolves around a boy that was born with a genetic enhancement that doesn't train nevertheless is almost a pro without any training at
This is essential in tennis for example to be able to sprint after a ball at the other side of the court (drop shot for example). Agility - This is the ability to change direction quickly and the ability to change and control the movements of your body. This is needed to be able to change direction quickly while the ball is in play, as you are not expecting where the next ball is going within the court. Muscular Endurance - This is the ability for the muscles to work
Netball is a sport that utilizes all components of fitness (Chandler et al. 2014). On court performance is characterized with strategically executed bursts of anaerobic power and speed, agility and muscular strength along with balance and coordination, muscular endurance and flexibility. Cardio-respiratory endurance contributes to on-court recovery phases (Chandler et al. 2014: another reference). The following fitness components are critical to on court success at an elite level (Barber et al. 2015; Bloomfield et.al 2007).
The aim of this assignment is to discuss my understanding of maintaining fitness to practice and making orientation to how the writer will establish and keep personal and professional boundaries; acting with integrity and honesty in my dealings with others.
You have to consider Nutrition, exercise, practice and their mental state. If you learn to balance this a player will be able to reach a goal. If it’s kicking a soccer ball into a goal, or scoring a touchdown. It comes down to how did you perform? Of course with performance there has to be strength and with strength comes conditioning.
When you think of an athlete, what comes to mind? The first things that probably come to mind are sports, entertainment, and physical abilities. If these are the first things you think of, then how would athletes significant? If you look at athletes from a different perspective, their significance can be seen. From this point of view one can see that athletes are significant because they provide role models, contribute to our business world, bring countries or groups of people together, and they provide sources of inspriration. Their prominence, which is enhanced by the media, can cause them to have a greater effect in these types of roles.
To be a pro-athlete takes work, but how much work? Is it Brain or is it bulk that will make you be successful in sports? The stories “What could Be Better than a Touchdown, by Kelefa Sanneh, and “why we run”, by Bernd Heinrich, both compare athleticism to dealing with your mind, or in other words they both convey the idea that Mental Strength is much more important than agility. In fact, Agility and Physical Prowess are almost nothing compared to Mental Strength.
It takes so much to be an incredible athlete, but which is more important: mental strength or physical ability? Many people can argue this question and go on forever. After reading, “What Could Be Better Than a Touchdown?” and “Confessions of a Doper” in my opinion, I believe that the mental aspect of sports is more important than your physical ability. I believe this because your brain controls what every other part of your body does. If your brain doesn’t know, neither does your body.
Throughout my life, my work ethic, my mental strength, and the skills I have learned, are largely because of my athletic background and all of the things I have gone through with them. To be good at sports, one does not have to
As stated in the second paragraph, our genes determine both our baseline athletic ability and also our rate of improvement. According to the New York Times, “After months of identical training, some exercisers make almost no fitness gains, while others increase their aerobic capacities by 50 percent or more” (Aschwanden). Some people may argue that although our baseline abilities may be different, training will help us all improve our athleticism. However, although this is the case, there is much more to be considered. Although training will improve one’s athletic abilities, we cannot control the speed at which we improve compared to others, the amount of effort needed to achieve the same results as well as the ceiling in which we can no longer improve.

When coaching athletes of the many things you do not want to happen is overlearning. Overlearning is when the practice goes beyond the amount needed to achieve a certain performance criterion. Extended practice of relatively simple skills could result in learners not continuing to engage in appropriate amounts of cognitive efforts. Players will being to daze off, become lazy in their efforts and not pay attention because they find the practice irrelevant. To prevent overlearning use a distributed practice technique, hold shorter practices and greater number of sessions with breaks in between. Next, you need to organize how complex you want your practice to be. If it is complex, start slow with isolation on the parts of the skill and progress to doing the entire skill, if simple then do the whole skill. Use any keys necessary in order to help the athletes learning process, visual, virtual, or written. Another way to improve practices is to make sure athletes have plenty of mental practice or strength. Have them mentally visualize themselves doing the skills that they performed in practice, it will help them to remember what they learned better and possibly increase their performance next time in
Physical fitness is usually applied to the framework most typically associated with two classifications: Basic fitness (a condition associated with health as well as well-being) and specialized fitness (the capability to carry out specific sports activities or work-related skills). Physical fitness is actually a condition associated with health with lower risk of early illnesses and the vitality to participate in a wide range of physical pursuits.
Why are mental skills so important to performance and why are they often neglected by coaches and athletes? Yogi Berra has been quoted as saying, "sport is 90% mental and 50% physical." You can question his mathematical savvy, but if you're an athlete, coach or fan, you can't question his wisdom. (Hacker, 2000) Many athletes understand that while developing oneself to their physical potential is a critical element in performance potential, it is often a deficit in our psychological game rather than errors in our physical performance that keep us from performing at optimum levels in practice, games or matches. Spud McKenzie, the Budweiser poster puppy, suggested that it is important to say when, but also emphasized the critical element of knowing “when to say when”. It is often the successful athlete has recognized what needed to be done and the unsuccessful athlete was unable to do so. As a consequence, it is not the physical talents or abilities that separate athletes and teams, or successful versus less successful performance, rather, the psychological dimension that most frequently explains a given sport outcome or individual performance. For this reason games are played. Prior to each contest, judgment could be made with regard to which team or individual is the “more highly skilled”. If games were decided on who is the most physically gifted and/or talented individuals or teams, it would prove to be an exercise in futility to compete. As a result, whether you are an athlete or a coach, mastering the mental game of sport will allow you to achieve a level of success as a competitor than you could otherwise not achieve by focusing exclusively on the physical side of sport.
All people contain a thing within them known as skill. Skill the ability to do something well; expertise. Many people claim that that are skilled in a certain activities. I may take time for people to learn, develop a skill, but some people are naturally skilled at certain things. Whether it is sports, cooking, math, reading, etc. People may use the skills they have or learn to decide what they will do in the future. Skill can be the deciding factor in whether you will be very successful or unsuccessful in certain activities in your life.
