To be a pro-athlete takes work, but how much work? Is it Brain or is it bulk that will make you be successful in sports? The stories “What could Be Better than a Touchdown, by Kelefa Sanneh, and “why we run”, by Bernd Heinrich, both compare athleticism to dealing with your mind, or in other words they both convey the idea that Mental Strength is much more important than agility. In fact, Agility and Physical Prowess are almost nothing compared to Mental Strength.
Did Dwight Lowery make the right move in the game against the Minnesota Vikings? This is an example of people using their ‘bulk’ over their mind, and this would of cost the team. One person in the story wanted him to take a knee, for it would be less risky. Others say there was no Vikings in the area, but some say that the scenario has a less that 1% chance of happening. Also, in the same story (What Could Be Better Than a Touchdown) after Dwight Lowery made a touchdown, the game was in the punter’s hands, if he missed then the Vikings would have a chance to be in the lead once again (57). As you can see, Dwight Lowery used bulk, and that could of let the Vikings win. The other story, Why We Run, also conveyed the idea that mind over matter is more successful.The main character was running a marathon.
He thought how he would be able to run far, and then he started to study animals for help, as he was a zoologist. (66) He wanted to amalgamate race experiences with human biology to see how humans run and to see how animals run. (66) As you may see, the zoologist uses his brain to try and be more athletic. Another example of this is when the author says that we are all natural born runners, and many people forget this (66). Tell me, when you are young do you have defined muscles, or have the ability to run? No, you don't, so this is another way you use mind over matter. On the last page (71) the author closes out with this sentence “I empathize with a heart touched by fire during this Dream Time of Youth, when as runners we were still undefeated in spirit, felt invincible, and thought the world was pure.” this powerful piece of evidence shows that even if you feel like falling down, don't be ashamed, you are still undefeated in
spirit. In conclusion, mental strength is much more important than agility, because if you don't have the mental strength, then you won't succeed. While I still have my standpoint, I can see why some people might think that agility is more important. I see this way because, in the passage why we run it shows that animals move on their own, they harness energy by means of muscles. However, while this may be true, some animals don't move on their own. And, they require extra care from their owners or humans. So, in my opinion, Mental Strength is much more important than agility for several reasons.

They work extremely hard year-round in order to become well-rounded in every aspect of the game. They make sacrifices and put their health in jeopardy in order to become the ultimate participant in their sport. One of the many young athletes who is only participating in and focusing on one sport is fifteen-year-old OJ Mayo from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the young talented athlete who is predicted to be the next LeBron James in the National Basketball Association (NBA). It was the last season of my football career and it could not have been going better. We were winning games and were having a blast. The team was giving high fives and banging helmets together. We were a true family; growing closer than any team I had ever been with before. I was standing with my teammates as we said the same prayer before our game as we did every week. “Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.” The deep, strong voices rang throughout the room sending chills down my back.
