In the realistic fiction short story, “On the Sidewalk Bleeding,” by Evan Hunter, the author expresses how judging people is wrong because there is more of them to show. During “On the Sidewalk Bleeding”, Andy was in a gang called the Royals. He gets stabbed by a gang member in the Guardian. Some people walking by saw him, but did not do anything about it. People see that he is a Royal and that is why they do not help him. He lays there bleeding, thinking all they see is the purple jacket and not who he is. After that, he starts thinking about his girlfriend and if she was missing him. Laura, his girlfriend, finds him lying on the sidewalk; she starts crying and calls out and runs until she finds a cop. In the short story, Hunter uses dialogue …show more content…
‘“He’s a Royal, he said. What should we do, Freddie? I don’t know what to do. He's a Royal”’ (Hunter, 2). This shows Freddie and Angela are judging Andy because they see his jacket. The dialogue in the story shows that they do not know if they should help him because he is a Royal. They see it says The Royals, and they do not care who he is outside of the jacket. They ignore the fact that he got stabbed and did not call the police because they do not want to get in trouble with the Guardians. They should have helped, no matter who he was, he was still a person. If they did not see the jacket then they would have helped him, this shows the theme that judging people is wrong because there is more to them than they show. In the story, Hunter uses punctuation to get his theme across. Laura finds a cop to help Andy, and he sees the jacket next to him. “A Royal, Hun?” (Hunter, 4). In this evidence, Hunter is implying that the officer is not showing any sympathy for how the royal got stabbed. When he first discovers that he is a Royal he didn't ask for his name or what even happened to him. Laura seems to be the only person caring about what happened to
