In “On the Sidewalk Bleeding”, a realistic fiction short story by Evan Hunter, he tells the story of how a 16 year old boy named, Andy, gets stabbed and is left on the sidewalk. In the beginning, Andy has been stabbed, but he does not realize he is dying. Eventually, he does realize this and thinks about his girlfriend, Laura. Next, multiple people throughout the story come across him but for their own reasons, they could not get Andy any help. In the end, Andy takes off his jacket due to a shift in his character. Unfortunately, he dies and Laura and a cop find him dead. In this story, Hunter utilizes figurative language (personification) and punctuation to get the point across that people should use their life well because they do not know when it is their time to go. In this story, Hunter is able to use punctuation to get this theme across to the reader. At this point in the story, Andy wonders in his head when he was stabbed. In this part of the short story, Andy starts thinking about the meaning of the Royals and his life. “The knife hated only the purple jacket. The jacket was a stupid thing that was robbing him of his life” (Hunter, page 3). This shows readers Andy's thought process as he thinks about how he wasted his life being in a gang. This teaches the theme because Andy saying “the jacket robbing him of his life” is basically Andy saying that if he did not have the jacket, he would not have been stabbed. The craft, figurative language, helps teach the theme because Hunter makes it seem like the knife does not like the jacket as if they are living and breathing.
