Strangers passing by could mean they want to help or they could hurt you. Andy is laying on the sidewalk bleeding and is being passed by many strangers but none helped. Evan Hunter is the author for "On the Sidewalk Bleeding”. Andy was stabbed for being apart of the gang the Royals and strangers were passing by him but not helping him. They were not helping him because they seen that he had a Royals jacket on so if they helped him he thought the other gang qthe Guardians would be after them. While Andy is on the sidewalk bleeding he is thinking about his girlfriend Laura and how he will miss her and she will miss him. Evan Hunter uses mood/tone in his story of "On the Sidewalk Bleeding" to convey the theme of murder usually leads to misery …show more content…
One of the things Andy thinks about is his loved one like his girlfriend. The quote that shows that is "He thought of her face, the brown eyes, the black hair." This connects to my thesis because the mood of this scene is sadness because Andy starts to realize that he is bleeding out and thinks about everything he is gonna miss in his life. Now Andy starts to think about what he wants to be remembered by. A quote that shows this is "If he died, he was Andy. He was not a Royal." Andy feels like he will only be be remembered by his gang name and not his real name. Everyone one knows who the royals are but if they say it was Andy that died and didn't mention that he was a royal people would care about it much more. As the people were passing by they saw his royal jacket and didn't want to help him. The tone of the the ending of the story is regretful because Andy was innocent and simply trying to go to the store, buy something, then come back to his girlfriend at a school dance. Andy felt bad because he didn't want to leave Laura like that, he wanted to stay with her for as long as he …show more content…
People are scared to help him because they think once they tell the cops the guardians will find them and hurt them. "He‟s a Royal. We help him, and the Guardians will be after us." Whenever one of the strangers think about helping Andy they see the royals then rethink about actually helping him. Another reason the strangers wouldn't want to help him is because they think the guardians will found out and be after them. The couple doesn't want to get involved with the gangs because they think they might get killed getting involve with the gangs. Andy tried his hardest not to be remembered as a royal but as soon as the cop seen Andy's royal jacket the cop immediately wrote this. "He took out his black pad. He opened it to a blank page. “! Royal,” he said." Even though Laura was telling the cop Andy's name it seemed like he was just ignoring her and writing down royal. Andy tried with all his effort to not to remembered as just a royal. Andy cared about this so much he tried to take his royal jacket off while he was bleeding so this caused him a lot of pain from doing
He demonstrates his aunt’s willingness to help writing: “‘I know that things are bad between you and your mom right now, and I just want you to know that I am on your side.’” Her generosity made a great impression on Andrews. He extends this thought further when he writes “‘And in the meantime, if you ever need to get away, my house is always open to you. And to Darian, too.’” The trust his aunt placed in him influenced him hugely in his life. He continues to impress this point recording: “I was grateful but shocked. She and Mom were really close, and for Susan to go behind Mom’s back like that was huge.” He used emotional change in order to exhibit how moved he was by the support he received from his family members even if it was only one ally who was on his side from the start. This abundant amount of assistance from his aunt causes the audience to empathize by relating personal experiences from their own families to the
One character that changed in their story was Andy from “On the Sidewalk Bleeding.” At the beginning of the story, Andy was proud to be a champion, proud to be a Royal. He was not ashamed of who he was. In “On the Sidewalk Bleeding”, it states, “He could remember how happy he was when the Royals had taken him...There had been meaning to the title.” This shows that Andy was proud of who he was. He was not scared of the Guardians. However, towards the end of the story Andy realizes he was stabbed because of his Royals jacket, not because he was Andy. He develops hatred for the jacket, knowing know that winning a championship was nothing to die for, nothing to give up seeing his lover. In the story it states, “The jacket had only one meaning,
Everyone at some point is bound to experience situations where they question who they really are. This conflict usually arises as a result of either another’s actions or one’s own actions. In the short story “On the Sidewalk Bleeding”, Andy struggles with his self-identity. Furthermore, the barber in “Just Lather, That’s All”, battles with his abilities and image of himself. Therefore, both the barber and Andy face an inner conflict as a result of their struggle of determining who they genuinely are, which conclusively results in how their future will unfold.
Andy goes back to school and talks to his basketball coach about how he feels about Rob's death and how his fiends and family feel about the accident. In addition, they discuss Andy's sentence because Andy keeps punishing himself for Rob's death. Everybody at school was crying during Rob's memorial service. Grief Counselors from downtown come to the school to try to get the kids to share their feelings.
It is the day Cali will remember for the rest of her life, for it is the day Cali Millhouse discovers her uncle was murdered by a family member. It is Two o'clock and half of the town of Rosewood is piling inside the local funeral home. Mrs. Dunham pays her respects to everyone except Cali’s father, Steve, for Mrs. Dunham finds him to be evil. Maybe she is right, and he killed Cali’s uncle? Whether he was or not, it is still a sad day and she needed the comfort of her father. That morning the sheriff came by and informed Cali and her family that someone related to Keith killed him. Surprisingly, her father made a comment that he believed it was her Aunt Audrey. Audrey was a money hungry, mean, gold-digger who dated men for their money, and she knew Keith had a two billion dollar company that would be left to someone if he passed.Steve felt much animosity towards his older sister, and would vituperate her name any chance he got. Audrey blamed Steve as much as her blamed her, nevertheless you could feel their acrimony towards each
The play begins with different characters talking about how they felt and doing after hearing John Lennon death. It was cool to not include a reenact of John Lennon getting shot. The play started letting us know that the
It is clear that sometimes Andy abused his powers to do what he thought was right and this was based solely off of Andy’s opinion. We see that he lived with regret for the mistakes he made and but in the end, he is still a superhero. The way this superhero story is told is different than most superhero stories, but the thing to take away from this is that a superhero is someone that has the intentions to save the world. Superheroes sometimes make mistakes and do action not based on the best efforts, but that doesn’t change who they are. They are still a superhero. In this story, Andy had good intentions, but sometimes his opinion wasn’t the same as the people around
...im. As they stood in each others arms, they experienced a sense of ease that neither of them had ever felt before. They had led hard lives and this was the end. Theirs dreams were crushed, yet these moments were very important in the course of their lives. This was also the point in which they decided that if they couldn't live with each other, they wouldn't live at all. They decided to commit suicide mutually, and failed. It may have been better off if they had succeeded, because they led miserable lives after the accident.
Introduction:The road to maturity and adulthood can be a long and difficult road for teens, especially when it comes to decision making and changing your view on the world. The popular short story, “On the Sidewalk Bleeding”, written by world-renowned author, Evan Hunter in 1957, displays this perfectly. Hunter uses the protagonist, Andy, to illustrate his development from adolescence into adulthood as he shifts from a state of ignorance to a state of knowledge, from a mindset of idealism to realism and from a selfish personality to a selflessness personality. Hunter expresses the major theme of coming of age through this protagonist character who is seen shifting from a state of adolescence to a more matured state of adulthood throughout the story.
1. The narrator was from a dramatic, objective point of view. The narrator sees all that is going on but does not know all, such as the lottery choosing who will be stoned. The narrator only provides the information that is currently going on, they do not draw conclusions or interpretations. It is written more like a show that you watch where you can only see what is currently happening, but you can see what is currently happening for everyone.
Tom's closing speech is a great moment. The descending fourth wall puts a powerful but permeable barrier between Tom and his family. They are behind him, behind him in time and in the physical space of the stage, and they are inaudible. Yet he cannot seem to shake the memory of them, and they are clearly visible to the audience. Although he has never explicitly spoken of one of the play's most important themes‹the conflict between responsibility and the need to live his own life‹it is clear that he has not been able to fully shake the guilt from the decision that he made. The cost of escape has been the burden of memory. For Tom and the audience, it is difficult to forget the final image of frail Laura, illuminated by candlelight on a darkened stage, while the world outside of the apartment faces the beginnings of a great storm.
Every time the family comes to a confrontation someone retreats to the past and reflects on life as it was back then, not dealing with life as it is for them today. Tom, assuming the macho role of the man of the house, babies and shelters Laura from the outside world. His mother reminds him that he is to feel a responsibility for his sister. He carries this burden throughout the play. His mother knows if it were not for his sisters needs he would have been long gone. Laura must pickup on some of this, she is so sensitive she must sense Toms feeling of being trapped. Tom dreams of going away to learn of the world, Laura is aware of this and she is frightened of what may become of them if he were to leave.
The narrator feels trapped with the current life he lives and this makes him depressed. When Robert is over...
If an individual is familiar with their surrounding “they are more likely to help” (Altruism and Helping Behavior. Print). In the essay, the authors state “the scene of the crime, the streets, in middle class society “represents all the vulgar and perilous in life” (Milgram, Stanley, and Paul Hollander. Paralyzed Witnesses: The Murder They Heard. Print.). In society, the streets, especially at night, represents the dangerous and negative sides of society due to the crimes and chaos that occur on the streets (gangs, drive-by shootings, robberies, murders, large crowds walking, etc.). The crimes and dangers of the streets cause many people to fear being on the streets alone which leads to external conflicts. When the murder was occurring, the witnesses’ attitudes of the streets prevented them from calling the police due to the fear of the streets and since the witnesses were middle-class, they believed that Genovese was poor, a criminal, or someone who has nothing else to do and was expecting for the=is to eventually
It taught me a lot like how a family should be and how a family should not be. The play makes you think wow this can really relate to me as a high school student and athlete. Linda needs to learn to speak her mind no matter what her husband says because people have rights and she should be able to talk about what she thinks is going on with her family. “When Linda converses with her husband it’s almost as if se walking on eggshells and almost that she is taking to a frail eggshell that is her husband’s mental state.” (Source 2). Nothing Linda says to try to help her husband will work because she is someone who gets under her skin and makes it a lot worse to willy but too anyone else she is doing anything in her power to help him much like and other wife would do for their husband. A couple weeks after willy dies after all that the family has been through with him it’s a very sad dad but the family is very mad at him still so it is a very hard position to be in and I know I would never want to be to in the position that this family is in. willy was a very mean and angry person to his family and had a lot of stress going on in his life this is why we need to realize that all he wanted was to make his family happy but it was just something he could not do so he gave up and just took all of his anger out on
