These researchers and doctors have been focusing whether a baby, as early as 8 months, can learn to read. Recently, they have decided that babies cannot learn to read due to the fact they are too young. They argue that these babies are indeed learning but that they are just not learning how to read. On the other hand I argue, that babies may be too young to read but that we should still teach them to be literate. At least 40 million American adults need stronger literacy skills to take advantage of more lifelong learning opportunities (Knowles 12). Low literacy limits life chances, regardless of how it is defined or measured. According to The Random House Dictionary literacy is defined as “the quality or state of being literate, esp. the ability to read and write.” Another breakdown of the word, from the same source is “possession of education.” Basic skills and literacy abilities are widely viewed as necessities for lifelong learning and the development of success among individuals, families, communities, and even nations. Better knowledge about literacy is an essential condition for improving it. Helping children improve their literacy skills can help them develop the capacity for lifelong learning, keep pace with changing educational expectations and rapid technological change, and achieve their life goals. Today in society there are many adults with poor literacy skills who lack the foundation they need to find and keep decent jobs, to support their children’s education and help them mold a literate future. I have taken one small step towards this problem by tutoring at two schools. The more time people put towards helping the youth of America is the more literate our population can become. Every small action can help, even if it is just tutoring at local middle and junior high schools.
Parents are often encouraged to read to their infants and toddlers as it has been proven that reading improves cognitive development and comprehension. Reading with children broadens their knowledge as well as developing pre-reading skills (Steinberg et. al, p.159). But what happens to children once they reach adolescence? How do literacy skills affect them? In this paper I will assess, analyze and provide an evidence based intervention to address a gap in the community based program called Reading is Fundamental (RIF).
Literacy embraces reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Integrating all of these into a literacy program is key. Teachers must provide endless and ongoing opportunities for their student to read, write, listen, and speak.

In this world, we are blessed with gift to fulfill our needs in community, church, and families. Children are gift from God. They are angles that were brought in to this Earth to take care and be well educated for better future. In order for children to become well-educated, they have to be successful in reading. If children cannot read words-by-words and understanding it’s meaning, they cannot achieve in other content areas such as Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, and Health. What if children can read? They can understand how to solve word problems, summarize a short story, explain history of their country, and perform science activities. Reading is very important to learn in school and at home. In school, there are effective teachers who worked hard to teach children how to decode words, sound out letters, read fluent, accuracy, and comprehend stories. But, can these effective teachers do the whole job alone? Who are the important supporters in children’s educational life? Parents played an essential role in every child’s educational life. Parents are children’s first teacher to teach them how to say words, sing songs, and counting numbers. “Parental involvement is an important factor in children’s literacy development” (Rasinski, 2003, p. 1).
How do you control a population from discovering the truth about the vast atrocities that their same government purposely commits against their citizens? Simple. You keep them illiterate. Keep them from learning information unveiling the truth about how government institutions and policies are set to marginalize and discriminate against them. You refuse them the opportunities to better their lives by limiting the means of acquiring knowledge that Freire would argue would help alleviate them from systems of poverty. As I reflect on my childhood the first memory of literacy I recall is when I was in kindergarten. I was approaching the end of the school year when my mother reveled to me my teacher was considering keeping me in kindergarten for another year. I was extremely upset and felt as if I had failed my first year of school. I was fresh out of the gate and already defective. My perception as a child was that the adults were already giving up on me. The teacher stated if I could learn the alphabet by the end of the school year I could continue ahead to the 1st grade. The conclusion of Kindergarten was vastly approaching. My mother constructed flash cards to help with my letter recognition. In doing so, she realized I could not see the letters.
Being literate defines who I am, and forms an integral part of my life. From the practical to the creative, it aids, and enables me to perform in the tasks that modern society dictates. I shall explore the many aspects of my life that are affected by literacy. Through this, understanding in greater depth what it means for me, to be literate.
