SUPPORTING READING THROUGH PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT In this world, we are blessed with gift to fulfill our needs in community, church, and families. Children are gift from God. They are angles that were brought in to this Earth to take care and be well educated for better future. In order for children to become well-educated, they have to be successful in reading. If children cannot read words-by-words and understanding it’s meaning, they cannot achieve in other content areas such as Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, and Health. What if children can read? They can understand how to solve word problems, summarize a short story, explain history of their country, and perform science activities. Reading is very important to learn in school and at home. In school, there are effective teachers who worked hard to teach children how to decode words, sound out letters, read fluent, accuracy, and comprehend stories. But, can these effective teachers do the whole job alone? Who are the important supporters in children’s educational life? Parents played an essential role in every child’s educational life. Parents are children’s first teacher to teach them how to say words, sing songs, and counting numbers. “Parental involvement is an important factor in children’s literacy development” (Rasinski, 2003, p. 1). Review of Literature This literature review was compiled to investigate the question: what effective strategies in reading can be utilized by parents to second grade students to assist and improve their children’s reading fluency? If children cannot read, their educational life will not succeed and reading performance fall below grade level. Support from parents has proven to be of extreme importance in the literacy success of a child. This often begins with the simple ritual of “bedtime stories” in the home. Studies show that children who are read to as infants perform better in literacy later in life. From a young age, children begin to understand the workings of the written word if they are exposed to it frequently. Babies who are nowhere near having the mental capacity to read and comprehend a book are still able to “follow along” when their parents or caregivers read to them. These children understand that each segment of writing represents a word and they are even able to recognize when a text is upside-down because they are accustomed to the appearance of writing. This puts the child significantly ahead when the time comes to learn to read.
With such high numbers of adolescents falling below basic in reading, illiteracy is a battle that must be fought head on. The largest dilemma with the struggle is the number of variations that cause adolescents to become reluctant, unmotivated or struggling readers. Fortunately, a large number of strategies exist to encourage and strengthen readers of all ages, proving that adolescence is not a time to give up on faltering students. Rather, it is a time to evaluate and intervene in an effort to turn a reluctant reader into an avid one (or near enough). Ultimately, educators must learn to properly assess a student’s strengths and weaknesses (Curtis, 2009) and pair them with the proper intervention techniques. If one method does not work, countless others exist to take its place.
Literacy has a strong impact on ones life’s in many reasons such as it can open doors for an individual to become successful in the world. Literacy is never easy to develop but once it is developed it is something that can never be forgotten. Achieving the quality of literacy can determine your efficiency in life. An individual environment throughout early childhood has an impact on the quality of literacy they develop.
While I believe every child is a reader, I do not believe every child will be enthralled with reading all the time. All students have the capability to read and enjoy reading, but just like any other hobby, interest will vary from student to student. The students in my classroom will be encouraged in their reading, be provided with choice, taught how books can take you into another world but, my students will not be forced to read. This paper will illustrate my philosophy of reading through the theories I relate to, the way I want to implement reading and writing curriculum, and the methods I will use motivate my students to read and help them become literate.
As a teacher, you need to encourage all attempts at reading, writing, speaking, and allowing children to experience the different functions and use of literacy activity (The Access Center, n.d.). Moreover, it is crucial for educators to understand phonological awareness and phonics; know what constitutes good children’s literature and how to use it; know children who need additional assistance with beginning reading and writing (Cunningham et al, 2004 as cited in McLachlan et al, 2013, p. 112). As I was reading this article, I remembered my struggles with learning to read when I was in elementary school. I used to dread when the teacher would call on me to read aloud to the class. At the time, I couldn’t read as fast as the other students and would struggle to sound out words. However, this problem became a thing of the past after my parents and teacher became aware of it. My parents worked with me every night to improve my reading level. Some nights I would follow along with my finger on the page to get familiar with the words as they would read aloud. Other we would change positions and I would read aloud while they followed to make sure I was getting all the words and pronouncing them correctly. I still believe that without the help of my parents and teacher I would still be struggling with reading today. I believe that children need to be read to for them to hear how words should be pronounced. Just reading with your child every night is important. From these experiences, they learn how to pronounce words on a page and their meaning behind them.
I want to share the experience that I got from reading to the little kids in Washington school. This had been my first time doing community service so I was a little nervous, I didn't think that the kids where going to like me. But when I go to the school and saw the lovable little kids I felt much better. When we got into little groups and started reading they started hugging me and reading along. They made me feel good and I was ready to come back next Thursday. This was the greatest experience that I had ever had, I felt like a teacher and it fells great to have those little kids liking you.

This article discussed the views and opinions of both parents and teachers in regards to beginning reading. Literacy development is a major issue within early primary classrooms. Parent’s views on this were that literacy development is the responsibility of the school. The foundation of literacy definitely comes from the school but it is at home where it is practiced and reinforce and may even overarch the schools responsibility. Children whose parents are unable to assist them at home with their literacy development definitely fall out in respect to ongoing help and support. Children in my primary school classes whose parents were unable to help them struggled with their reading, word recognition and literacy skills the entire way through primary school. This shows that literacy development is not primarily the schools responsibility but the child’s parents at home also.
