Facilitator is often proposed as an alternative to teachers standing in front of the classroom. However, the teacher talk has been linked to the use of international pattern for facilitator talk has proved to be more elusive. Reading was from the Basel reader and writing was copying from the board. Classrooms today are learner-centered with the teacher as the facilitator encouraging students to become independent learners as they seek out the solution to the problem and build on prior knowledge. Students are more likely to succeed in differentiated classroom where learning environment is created for all types of learners. The second part of this paper will address the roles of facilitator and learner and how effective classrooms are shifting from traditional to learner- centered. While I believe every child is a reader, I do not believe every child will be enthralled with reading all the time. All students have the capability to read and enjoy reading, but just like any other hobby, interest will vary from student to student. The students in my classroom will be encouraged in their reading, be provided with choice, taught how books can take you into another world but, my students will not be forced to read. This paper will illustrate my philosophy of reading through the theories I relate to, the way I want to implement reading and writing curriculum, and the methods I will use motivate my students to read and help them become literate.
There are many areas for potential failure in the learner-centered classroom. Doyle states that student resistance is the biggest obstacle to overcome. The student often doesn’t understand the concept and is not receptive to it. The greatest way to deal with this potential failure is to explain the ‘why’ to the students. Students that understand why they are to do a task and understand how to apply it are more likely to overcome it.

Every child deserves a positive, safe, nurturing, and stimulating learning environment where they will grow academically, socially, emotionally, and physically. My role as an educator is to provide my students with this type of environment as well as an education that will help them succeed academically and become life long learners. It is the responsibility of a literacy educator to provide students with this type of environment, but also to provide instruction that will help students become successful readers and writers. There are numerous programs and philosophies about literacy and reading. Through years of experience and research, one begins to develop their own creative approach on teaching these skills. After looking at different programs and seeing the positive and negatives of each, an integrated and balanced approach of literacy seems to be the best way to teach the differing needs of each student.
When teachers differentiate their lesson, the students are more engaged to learn. Students have some choice in their learning activities, which motivates students to want to learn and also puts more learning responsibility on the students. Some students may prefer to work alone or in groups and some students like to be hands-on. I was exposed to a classroom that was very diverse and learned the importance of teaching for learner differences. Not are students are the same and when the needs of a classroom are not being met the students can quickly become frustrated and deterred from learning. When the student’s needs are being met they are able to interact with their peers without the frustration and with guidance can maintain a safe learning environment.
My teaching career has been spent learning how to provide appropriate support, guidance, patience, & understanding, as well as to enhance academic growth & success, for all students. My purpose as a teacher is to enrich and inspire the lives of young students with moderate/intensive needs by providing access to information instead of functioning as the primary source of information for students to flourish. My teaching methods will be to create an environment ripe with opportunities for discovery and exploration which will allow all students to learn at their own pace, generate questions and construct knowledge, while providing hands-on practice of skills in authentic situations as well as to make learning intriguing and meaningful to all students. Education serves as the foundation to a lifetime of learning. Since every child is unique, I believe that it is important for them to learn in an environment that is both secure and stimulating. By creating this type of atmosphere, the students will be able to realize their intelligence and use it constructively. As a future educator, it will be my goal to establish a classroom that is, 1) non-authoritarian, 2) student-centered, and 3) focused around student experience.
