Chess, polo and golf are among activities often considered legitimate sports. Several commercial companies are making “impressive gains in the field of standardized competition” (Graham) to gain national acceptance and legitimize recognition for professional gamer contests that would attract all age groups (Munoz). There have been competitions between video gamers in massive arenas and stadiums that have attracted millions of viewers online (Dirs). Worldwide, the fan base for video games continues to grow dramatically, surpassing viewer numbers for World Series and NBA Finals telecasts (Foster). So, should video games be considered a sport?
Discussion
The definition of the term “sports” can help examine the characteristics of video games and consider if they resemble traditional sports. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary online, a sport is “a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other. . . . a physical activity (such as hunting, fishing, running, swimming, etc.) that is done for enjoyment”

A former judo competitor, referee and coach from Poland, Michael Blicharz (qtd. in Dirs), argues the two activities are not dissimilar. Both have tournaments or competitions to gain notoriety, involve long hours of training and intense study of opponents’ strategies, use established sets of regulations or rules and display strong emotional responses when winning or losing. Blicharz adds that although physical exertion is normally a characteristic of sports, this limitation has not prevented activities such as “darts or snooker from [being placed] . . . under the sporting umbrella.” Graham believes video gaming actually surpass the traits of traditional sports because it offers new entertaining diversions but like traditional sports still emphasizes “teamwork, collaboration, and critical evaluations of any given game
What exactly determines whether or not an activity is a sport? The term sport is defined by The Free Dictionary as: A physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively, an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively, or an active pastime; recreation.
I love when I score the game-winning shot in NBA 2K. I only did once in real life, but it was a scrimmage game with friends. Furthermore, it is fun coming back in a game and winning it, especially when I was the main reason we won the game. For me, epic wins give me a boost of confidence because I feel like I can do anything. It is easier to have epic wins in video games because we are not afraid of failing in a game like McGonigal said in chapter 12. I like how Extraordnaries can help a real nonprofit organization because most games we play only kill time, but their games can benefit someone else’s life. The idea of a video game in real life sounds amazing. I can accomplish goals and feel satisfied that I completed it, and I can help save lives at the same time. I agree that there is a lot of problems in our society and the world, and epic wins can help us take on these problems one step at a time because we can complete a goal and solve a problem. Also, I like how Extraordnaries can help raise awareness because these tasks they make is supposed to help someone and find a solution to a problem. I agree with McGonigal’s words that we have no intention to help a child across the world with a test unless there was someone or something that challenged us to do it. If someone challenges me
Football is possibly too dangerous of a game for young boys and girls to be playing. I am not talking about all forms of football, but more specifically tackle football. Yes, football may possibly be one of America’s loved sport because of the brutality that it consists of; although I believe that there should be an age where kids should start playing such a horrific game. At the age of ten young boys, and girls, should be worrying about who they are going to be playing with outside at recess. Kids should not have to be worried about their friends having to miss school because of a concussion, or worse him or herself.
...it sports require movement if even the slightest. It would not be the right thing to do to call this a sport it would disgrace the name of sports and it could be insulting to those who participate in real sports. Considering all the training and hard work put into their game then have a poker player who probably does nothing in preparation for their game but yet can have the title of athlete. Does not seem fair to all the athletes that risk injury in pursuit for glory in their sport. A card game is not a sport like Matt Pusateri says in his article “lets try to pretend it’s something it isn’t .” "The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play." –Olympic Charter
Video games can be seen in both a positive and negative light. Video gaming has become a popular activity for people of all ages, yet many fear the aftermath they can ensue. Many children and adolescents expend large amounts of time playing them. Video gaming is a multibillion-dollar industry – bringing in more money than movies and DVDs. In fact, the PlayStation 2 was the first video game system to integrate DVD mechanics. It was originally intended to exist as a CD add-on to complement the Super Nintendo, but due to licensing difficulties Sony chose to develop the PlayStation as its own distinctive system. Video games have become very sophisticated. Some games connect to the internet, which can allow children and adolescents to play online with unknown adults and peers. The
Nowadays video games get nothing but bad reputations from people. There are people in powerful positions who are saying that video games have nothing but bad effects and they only promote violence which leads to children acting out in violent ways. Who are the ones listening to the people in these powerful positions; Parents. Some Parents have this misunderstanding that video games are bad and that they have a negative effects on their child’s minds and how they develop after playing them. The parents with that understanding are misinformed and need to understand just how beneficial video games can actually be for their children. Although, some parents think that video games offer nothing but
The Social Classes Where in today's society, the social roles really have not changed that much since the book was published. There will always be people who like to show off their money with fancy cars and big houses, though ordinary people still keep this world running, even if someone may see it or not. The article “What Determines How Americans Perceive Their Social Class?” by Robert Bird and Frank Newport, shows readers the different ways people interpret social classes in today's society. Also, the authors help provide stats and percentages to help show which social classes people identify as. The novel, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is still relevant for modern readers because it shows the different ways social class were
Whether they be first-person shooters like Call of Duty, sports games like Madden or Fifa, racing games like Forza or Mariokart, or even games and apps on your phones, there are quite a bit of gamers in here. According to the Entertainment Software Association, about 59% of American play some sort of video game, so gaming isn’t all that uncommon (Entertainment Software Association, 2014). As such, there must be some sort of effect on the audience of this growing form of entertainment.
Confucius once said, "he who does not do well is less guilty than he who pushes too hard." People found that competitive sports are often physically straining and it is detrimental to proper emotional development. This blows away the misconception that competitive sports create a healthy and engaging atmosphere for kids. This and an overly strong obsession with winning create a toxic mix for the child’s wellbeing. People have begun to realize the world of competitive may be doing more harm than good for their children. Parents have also begun to notice that competitive sports often injure their children severely and also make the child feel left out, which in turn is detrimental to the child 's emotional health. Therefore, competitive sports
Sports can help many at- risk youths. In order to participate in sports you need to be committed and willing to work hard. You also have to learn to respect others and accept that winning isn’t the only measure of success. Losing can build character as well. When youth participate in a sports they enjoy, they are less likely to engage in behaviors that are harmful or dangerous to themselves and others. It is for these reasons schools should strive to maintain athletic programs for their students.
“I 'm very careful about how I portray violence in my films. I do believe that violence, especially violent video games, is not a good thing for young kids” (Lee, quote hook). This quote taken by Stan Lee expresses the exact predicament video game designers are facing, about how violent video games truly are violent and effect young adults. Although video games have ratings on them just like how movies and T.V. shows do, which can protect or keep unnecessary violence away from teenagers and children. Meanwhile electronically controlled devices can still produce violence in children because of the careless portray of cruel and vicious scene’s game designers produce in their games, such games like GTA. Brutal and savage video games should
Video games can give players experience and knowledge, but they can also, at the same time, drain energy from a player by taking away vital sleep the night before a game . Video games can be a great source of basic athletic skills, improving hand eye coordination and visual search skills. Young athletes, who have been playing and practicing with sports video games have a greater understanding than older sports stars did when they first began playing a sport, but video games cannot create an athlete. Video games help athletes become better at their sport, but the video games cannot help a person become an athlete. "A better analogy for virtual training [sports video games] could be weight lifting: It’s an activity that won’t turn you into a professional athlete, but if you are one, it will make you better at your sport" (Suellentrop 20). Sports video games impact sports performance positively, but a balance must be found between video games and real life practicing, as video games can cause harm just as much as improvement for and athletes sports performance
Whitford, Steve. "Gaming Is NOT a Sport." Do Gaming. N.p., 11 Jan. 2011. Web. 13 Dec. 2013
Video games are electronic sports which involves user interface and user interactivity. They generate a visual response which helps to provide excitement and entertainment. Video games are played on computers, televisions, or any kind of device with a display screen. People play video games for fun and also because some games are more productive and useful. With growth in technology video games have become very popular in children. Those games can be informative and a brain-builder for children but at the same time it may be so violent that they not only become the reason for the children to be destructive but also vigorously increase anti-social behavior.
Someone is sitting on a stage with people clapping and people cheering, but they didn’t sing or dance, they did magic while playing a video-game. This is competitive gaming. People can see and know that gaming is fun. They are playing a sport. Some disagree with this, but many other people believe it is. The players must go to the gym for fast reactions and stamina and must be very mentally focused, and just agree to stick with the trends as well. Video gaming should be a sport.
