Should Schools have Vending Machines? They can be a great way for students to get a snacks in the day. Recently, in some states, laws were passed that schools should not be allowed to have vending machines. Should this law be passed throughout all states or should schools be allowed to have vending machines?
First, vending machines can be a great way for students to get snacks without being hungry throughout the day. In many schools, the lunches are very late so the students get hungry waiting for lunchtime. A great way for students to get a snack is to stop at a vending machine in between classes. Since the beginning of time, schools were always a place we could trust. A place where we could send our kid(s) off to without worry of what they may be learning, doing, or eating, but perhaps we should be. As the craving of fast food is growing, so is the demand for it. Some schools have taken advantage of this and brought fast food into their schools, providing it for lunch. This doesn’t help kids focus in the classroom for hours after consuming these fatty and sugary foods. The kids will get a sugar high but then crash hours after and won’t be focusing in class but instead, falling asleep during an important lesson. Anita states that, “school cafeterias, of all places, should demonstrate how a healthy, low-fat, well-balanced diet produces healthy, energetic, mentally alert people,” and teaching this at high schools is the best place to change the food because in this generation, kids are becoming overweight and unhealthy because of all the “junk food” they are eating. In “Hooked on ‘Caramel-Colored Gold,” Melody Nelson claims “Despite the increased awareness of the benefits of good nutrition, we are a nation hooked on junk food, and many school administrators are taking advantage of the situation ” (par. 3). Nelson propose a ban on vending machines in schools because junk food is unhealthy for children, and they risk future health problems. I agree with Melody Nelson and believe that vending machines should be banned from school campuses, because they sell unhealthy food, they cause more money to schools for hiring extra custodians, and they are affecting children learning abilities.
The spinners have caused many distractions in a countless number of schools across the country. Teachers want them banned because their students play with the toy instead of paying attention in their classes. Students have even attached pencils to the bearings making it a hazard. Fidget spinners are supplying students with entertainment, rather than help with anxiety . Sadly, many have taken advantage of their cause, leading to using them for the wrong purposes.
The vending machines which have mostly sodas and chips are also convenient for kids, but they are consuming tremendous amount of sugars that are so unhealthy for their diets. In high schools, their hormones are changing and when they eat or drink foods that are not healthy, their hormones respond to those, by making them hyper, unable to learn and to comprehend subjects better in schools.
How would you like your school, having focused and working students with gum in their mouths or having disorganized students with nothing in their mouths? Students should be allowed to have gum in school because it helps them. Chewing gum helps their brain and their education. And most of all, it helps them focus. Some people might say that gum is bad for your well-being, that gum in school shouldn't be allowed because it distracts people and it’s too messy and noisy.
Yet the greatest difference between the two high schools lies in the nourishment. At Ridgeview High School, at least one snack machine and one drink machine can be found in virtually all the buildings. These vending machines consist of various sugary foods and drinks like honey buns and Coke. Additionally, Ridgeview offers a coffee and a cookie portable. During 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 6th period, the coffee shop sells small ($1) and large ($2) frappuccinos, iced coffees, hot coffees, and smoothies. The cookie portable, however, is open all day and sells various types of cookies and brownies for a $1 a piece. During lunch, Ridgeview has 3 different lines that sell international foods such as pizza and nachos, and chicken nuggets with mashed potatoes.
If you observe students buying lunch in the cafeteria, you don’t often see them buying these kinds, but not limited to, foodstuffs: burritos (which are just beans wrapped in tortillas), “burgers” (meat slapped on two slices of bread), etc. Even the chicken nuggets aren’t very popular. And the price is great! $3.75-$4.75 is not worth such “garbage”, as a teacher would say. Out of the 25 students I surveyed, 56% stated that they would like to see their cafeteria changed.
How could are schools use our money wisely. Maybe it goes to the teachers. Maybe it goes to are academics. Or maybe just maybe it goes to the students. First thing first, cafeteria. The students think that vending machines are very necessary because it would shorten the lunch lines. The students who are really hungry could get lunch faster. Also more lunch lines would be easier to get are food. Second, school busses. For the parents that work early in the morning and are always rushing, this could help them out. Students would get to school on time and parents don't have to stress about getting their kids to school. And there could be a bus for each town. Now, finally new subjects.
