Yet the greatest difference between the two high schools lies in the nourishment. At Ridgeview High School, at least one snack machine and one drink machine can be found in virtually all the buildings. These vending machines consist of various sugary foods and drinks like honey buns and Coke. Additionally, Ridgeview offers a coffee and a cookie portable. During 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 6th period, the coffee shop sells small ($1) and large ($2) frappuccinos, iced coffees, hot coffees, and smoothies. The cookie portable, however, is open all day and sells various types of cookies and brownies for a $1 a piece. During lunch, Ridgeview has 3 different lines that sell international foods such as pizza and nachos, and chicken nuggets with mashed potatoes.
In 2010, Beachwood High School hired Dirk Dagger as principal. The previous principal was beloved Phyllis Knowles who worked at Beachwood for two years. Prior to Phyllis was Joe Gates who left his first principalship after only two years. Preceding to Joe, Lonna Self led the high school for four years and was forced out by the board. All of the principals lived outside the local community and commuted long distances to work. Dirk's two assistant principals, or AP's, were Frank Fischer, a young, highly talented former business education teacher for six years, in his second year as AP. The second AP was Sara Shad, a 28 year veteran English teacher at the high school, in her fourth year as AP. The administration was aware that culture changes existed in the school with the continued influx of Arabic families into Dearborn Heights.
High school is a time for students to develop new interests, talents, and hobbies. As well as, prepare them with material they need for college or the workforce. Most schools, Sequoyah High School being amongst one of these schools, are lacking the resources that students need in order to pursue these academic interests. Although Sequoyah High School is a great high school for students in Monroe County, there are several issues that still need to change in order to help better the school system as a whole.
The organization I work for is a nursing home management company. That’s the simple definition. Health Services Management Group manages of the operations of eleven (11) skilled nursing facilities (SNF), and three (3) home health agencies (HHA). Each of the SNFs and HHAs are operated/licensed by a single purpose entity. Of these long term care providers, one (1) SNF and two (2) HHAs are operated as non-profit organizations. The purpose of the non-profit providers, ultimately, is to fund The Trousdale School. “Trousdale School serves high functioning adults with intellectual disabilities, providing academics and life skills for the purpose of learning independence.” 1

At the Oakes Public Schools, the coaching contract is a section of the teachers negotiated agreement. The contract also states that all efforts will be made to fill all extracurricular positions with teaching faculty, and any community members may have their job re-posted following the season, regardless of performance. For faculty members, the contract is also annual, and renewed pending evaluation. North Dakota does not have tenure, so all teachers are year-to-year employees, as are coaches.

When it comes to Pleviak Elementary School we take leadership very seriously. I spoke with the assistant Principal at Pleviak Nikki Gardner about the leadership framework at Pleviak and at Round Lake Area School District 116. During our talk we discussed how Pleviak uses a distributed leadership framework where decision making is spread across a variety of committees. These committees are then led by a variety of teachers in the building. There are a total of eleven committees that cover a wide range of areas. We also discussed the district leadership team. It is called the School Improvement Leadership Team (SILT) that consists of three to four staff members from each building in the district and they have monthly meetings about facilitating district initiatives that will help meet the district goals.
Many schools are voting to remove vending machines, and leave the kids hungry or thirsty between classes and after school. Removing the machines is only One fix to the problem. We need to look at other possible solution that could keep the machines in school, and keep snacks available to hungry children. they could very easily stock these machines with healthier options. There are many reasons why taking these machines out of schools would be a mistake.
In “Hooked on ‘Caramel-Colored Gold,” Melody Nelson claims “Despite the increased awareness of the benefits of good nutrition, we are a nation hooked on junk food, and many school administrators are taking advantage of the situation ” (par. 3). Nelson propose a ban on vending machines in schools because junk food is unhealthy for children, and they risk future health problems. I agree with Melody Nelson and believe that vending machines should be banned from school campuses, because they sell unhealthy food, they cause more money to schools for hiring extra custodians, and they are affecting children learning abilities.
