What would students do if they were allowed to check out without bringing a note or parental supervision? While there is no blanket statement to answer said question, the school seemingly thinks that whatever would come from allowing students to sign out without proper documentation would be too much to handle. A new attendance policy revealed to students in February prevents parent s from calling or sending emails to allow their students to sign out and instead, requires either a note to be submitted in the morning so it can be reviewed or a parent to physically come to the school for their child. Likewise, it has caused problems.

If students cannot drive themselves home in case of emergency, is a car practical or even an asset? If students are unable to leave or sign out legally through the office, they may be tempted to skip. Skipping, a practice relatively common for high school students is reportedly easy. A student can slip out the bus doors, fire exit, or door near the cafeteria and not worry about being caught. This could be what some end up resorting to when they get sick. This method prompts debate as many think it may be wiser if the school were to allow sign outs and thus have the knowledge of where a student is instead of forcing students to turn to truancy.
Seeing as there are some unwanted consequences from this new rule, changes should be made. One of the most reasonable solutions would be to once more follow the old attendance policy, which allowed parent emails and phone calls during the day. While the school may be concerned with forgery in some cases, very few teenagers would be willing to take the time to construct a Ferris Bueller-like lie and put that amount of effort into a forged alibi.
