Attendance is a crucial aspect of a student’s education. When a student is tardy or absent, this interferes with them receiving the information given in class. Class introductions that include instructions, objectives, due dates, etc. may be missed if a student is tardy and if a student is absent, they may also get behind on their class work and homework. Communication between teacher and students about the classroom management procedures for these two things are important so that students are informed and are able to take the initiative to gather what they have missed which can help avoid them falling behind. If tardies and absences are frequent, a teacher may begin to be concerned and question what could be the possible reasons behind it, whether that be an outside force in a student’s life or something that may be happening in the teacher’s own classroom. Both tardiness and absenteeism can be influenced by a lack of support from the community, family support, transportation problems, poor health, etc. (Teasley, 2004). Other possible reasons that may influence students to be absent are those that come from the school environment. Lacking support from teachers, feeling unsafe because of bullying or other factors, difficulty with content, etc., are some examples. Ken Reid’s article “The causes, views and traits of school absenteeism and truancy” explains that secondary school student’s reasons for being absent are school-related (Reid, 2005). Students are deprived from there leaning do to the tardy policy. A policy that is unfair this tardy policy makes students serve a 30 min detention if there even a second late to class and after multiple absences or tardies you can face legal consequences. There's many reasons why students may be late for example students need to take the city buss, bikes ,cars to school but there's always traffic so sometimes it's not the students fault , students shouldn't be given a 30 minute detention for being a couple of minutes late.
I am determined to have a perfect attendance when it comes to my college classes. Keeping a balanced attendance allows me to be up to date with assignments and set an excellent example of myself. Participating in class activities like writing on the board or reading aloud examples, was not my one of my biggest strong suits. Although I spoke out in my assigned groups, which brought a lot more attention to myself, I did not openly speak out in front of the whole class and volunteer myself. This is a certain area that I need to improve on. Although I did not speak out as openly as I should, I always came fully prepared. Being prepared and organized helped keep everything I needed together so I could perform at my fullest potential. In addition, I made sure to create reminders on my phone notifying what I would need, when to work on a certain assignment for the class, and especially for my conferences with Dr. Kennedy (refer to page 3). Attendance is an important factor in children’s school success. Studies have shown that students who attend school regularly scores higher on test than their peers who are frequently absent (Epstein pg 309). Illness is one of the leading causes of absenteeism among school age kids. Therefore keeping kids healthy and teaching them ways to stay healthy will aid in avoiding missing school related to illness.
Establish a sense of responsibility by creating rules and expectations as a class. Have clear visual cues of responsibilities and consequences around the room. Use the support of other staff in implementing classroom management strategies. Use the school discipline system to monitor student behaviour. If students engage in misbehaviour, they receive a warning and are then sent to the timeout desk to reflect and write in the timeout book.
Some professors in universities and some departments have very tight polices related with attendance. Teachers in college for the most part don't really care whether or not you are in class. All it means is that if you are not there, you are going to get a failing grade if it happens too often. Missing too many classes will cause the teacher to withdraw you from the class, resulting in a failing grade. If you do it the smart way you would withdraw from the class yourself because then it would have no negative effect on your overall G.P.A. In high school the teachers are always on you about attendance. If you miss too many days you can fail. If you are not in class they want to know why. They also want a note from your parents excusing you from class. Some schools even want your parents to call you in sick if you are not going to be there. If you do not have a note they can write you up for an unauthorized absence and, give you a detention.
A high school class and a college class are conducted in different ways. In high school, teachers exercise control over the flow of information, while college professors encourage the student to seek out pertinent information. Throughout the year, a high school teacher will remind the student of upcoming due dates and assignment requirements. If a student misses a test or homework assignment, the teacher will provide missing notes or study guides so that the student is kept up to date with the rest of the class. For example; when I was in high school, I missed a week of school to go on vacation with my family. My mother spoke with my teacher before we left and he agreed to let me turn in my homework when I returned to class. Students are to attend school every day and to be participating with the class. When you are absent the student parents must clear the absence with the attendance director.She has more aspects as to not turn in late work. Every teacher must have a set of classroom routines and procedures to maintain order in the classroom. When entering the classroom, students will enter in a quiet manner. They will sit at their assigned desk and have all material ready to begin on required work. Once the bell rings and the door is closed, students will be seated and working. Tardiness is unacceptable and if the student receives more than three unexcused tardies per nine weeks, a referral will be given to the office and a phone call will be made the parent or guardian. Also, students should not be more than three minutes late to class. This will result in an automatic referral to the office.

Therefore, teachers need to provide clear purpose and strong guidance regarding both academics and student behavior. Teachers and students need to collaborate as a team sharing concerns about the needs and opinions of others. Teachers should be aware of high-needs students and have a plethora of specific techniques for meeting some of their needs. There are a number of truancy prevention programs that shown to be effective. Bulack et al (2011) suggests the following strategies for reducing truancy; parental involvement in preventative actions, firm penalties, incentives, consequences, and support that are significant to both child and parent, the program should work closely with various community resources, such as law enforcement, social services, mental health services, and mentors. Support from within the school system, including administrators to commit to supporting youth, to help keep them in school, and ongoing evaluation of the students’ progress (Bulach, Lunenburg, & Potter, 2011)
