Mandatory Attendance Policies
While studying or even registering for a class presents a challenge to some college students, the greatest obstacle remains, going to class. Attending college is supposed to signify a new found freedom to make many important choices regarding education without high school mandatory attendance policies. However, students everywhere are coming to the staggering realization that college is not too different from high school. Teachers still take class roll and students are still expected to be at every class on time. What next, hall monitors in the hall? The time has come for action to be taken. Colleges must abolish mandatory student attendance policies for several reasons to be further discussed.
First, in order to enroll in college, mandatory attendance in a previous educational institution is required. For most, this record consists of 13 years of mandatory classroom attendance prior to college. It is a valid argument that the continuation of this policy is effective for job preparation in that it teaches accountability and self-discipline. But if a student is required by a higher authority to do something, is it really self-discipline? No, it is merely a high school power struggle between student and teacher that has some how found its way in to the classrooms of colleges everywhere. In the essay, “We Send Too Many Students To College” by Marty Nemko, he argues that, contrary to popular belief, college is not for everybody. Nemko states that colleges accept numerous high school graduates every year, when they know that if the student did not do well in high school, they have a very low chance of actually acquiring a degree. However, If someone is fortunate enough to graduate from college and obtained a degree that costed them an exceptional amount of money, it is likely that they will have to settle for a job they could have “landed as a high school dropout”. Colleges are just out for money, and the only way they can get money is by accepting countless students into their “business”, whether the student will prosper from it or not is a different story. From the beginning of high school, students strap on their seatbelts and prepare for one of the most vigorous races of their lives – becoming successful. With the rare occurrence of a break, kids are expected to keep on driving as fast and as powerfully as they can in order to get into a “great” college, which would be followed by graduate school and then an actual job that would make a lot of money. In American society, common values include working hard, determination, and being so productive that free time is not even a question. However, this philosophy is taking a major toll on American college and high school students. For at least 40 years, America’s future has been steadily growing unmotivated, tired, and hopeless due to the overemphasis on performing well in school. This phenomenon is appropriately expounded in William Zinsser’s “College Pressures”, which takes a look at the top four sources of tension that cause these feelings of dejection and agitation. After reading this article, I came up with a few solutions to this national problem. It is time to switch the harsh, over-encouraging green light of education to a comfortable yellow one. In order to make this ideal transition, directors of education across the country need to primarily reduce the amount of out-of-class assignments, lighten the grading system, and incorporate days in the school year that allow students to express their thoughts about school and provide useful feedback.
Howard Gardner used to define intelligence as “the ability to solve problems or to create products that are valued within one or more cultural settings” (Gardner 33). The modern day human being would most likely include the words “smart” and “dumb” in their definition of intelligence. Gardner questioned the belief of only one intelligence so he created his own theory that involved seven different discoveries. He didn’t want to call these discoveries “skills” or “talents” or gifts” because those all suggested a drawback so he decided on the word “intelligence,” creating his theory of multiple intelligences (Gardner 33). Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences including, linguistic, logical/mathematical, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, spatial, intrapersonal and interpersonal, has many implications for modern education and culture.
There is a shocking dropout rate among college freshmen due to persecution by professors and if the condition persists, America’s economy will be dangerously destabilized. Understanding that the future of the nation is dependent on the upcoming youth for leaders, colleges should want to provide educational opportunities that will insure steady economic growth and prosperity. Unfortunately, research provides evidence to the contrary. Research confirms that one out of every four freshmen drop out immediately after or during their first year in college (Whitborne 26). Some studies declare it is higher than that, probably as high as an appalling 50% in some institutions. These dropouts are not only goof-off, indifferent, and partying students; they are the academically serious students as well (Stephens et al. 5). With this in mind, many researchers are sounding an alarm that too many capable college freshmen are dropping out during their first year at college. Every parent, citizen, lawmaker, and educational institution should be concerned with this information. The antiquated culture of discouragement, in colleges and universities, contributes to the unprecedented dropout rate of capable college freshmen.
Since intelligence is usually judged in IQ tests or just tests in school, many individuals are claimed to have average or little intelligence. They struggle in school, trying to learn math, English, reading; but they may excel in other places like sports, music, or relationships. This is where Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences comes into play. He proposed that there are eight forms of intelligence, possibly more. The two that are seen in school often are Logical-Mathematical and Linguistic-Verbal. The people who excel at these are seen as geniuses and are thought to do very well in life. The others that don’t do well in those two may be better at one of the other six.
College is one of the most expensive things most people will do in their life. With that being said, should everyone go to college? The experience may not be for everyone. Particularly if it’s something you can’t pay off in the long run. Most people’s families will help them out as much as possible with the expenses of college. Most people can’t afford college out of pocket so they rely on loans from the government. How long will it take for a student to pay off the loans they accrue of the time in college; how many years will the student be going to college? The student could also choose to get an associates’ degree rather than a bachelor’s. How would their yearly income differ from if the student had chosen to get the bachelor’s? Sometimes a student won’t need to go to college for their education to be able to do the career they’d like. Should the student go to college for an associates’ degree for the experience or would it just be a waste of money?
Bisexuals are typically misunderstood, because they do not belong with the homosexual community or the straight community. They are commonly referred to as “fence sitters,” who are not invested in the interests of either community. In The Scientific Quest to Prove Bisexuality Exists, there was an example of a bisexual woman who felt that she could not even come out to the lesbian community at her college. The fact that one sexual orientation minority might actually fear another sexual minority based upon inaccurate stereotypes is a tragedy in the least. The stereotype that bisexual people are untrustworthy, and create a “wild card” of insecurity in a relationship has made them shunned by both gay and straight partners. Bisexuals are often not even taken seriously due to the assumption that they cannot maintain a monogamous relationship. For the concept of intelligence, Robert Sternberg’s “Triarchic Theory of Successful Intelligence” and Gardner’s “Theory of Multiple Intelligences” were focused on for this particular self-assessment. Sternberg’s theory of intelligence divides total intelligence into analytic, creative and practical components (Woolfolk 117). According to Sternberg, analytical intelligence involves “the mental processes of the individual that lead to more or less intelligent behavior”, creative intelligence involves “coping with new experiences”, and practical intelligence involves emphasizing “the importance of choosing an environment in which you can succeed, adapting to that environment, and reshaping it if necessary” (Woolfolk 118).
The term ‘college’ is very hard to define. One can define it as a Utopia of knowledge, where learning is appreciated and it will become useful throughout one’s entire life. Some may also tell that living in a harsh world, ‘college’ is just a place where students enter with an exorbitant amount of money learning things that will not be applied in real life. Consider a hypothetical character John who exemplifies the majority of new students in United States: he feels enthralled and excited to start college, hoping to get a degree at the end of the day. However, John quickly came to a realization that he is not performing at the first few weeks of class. Disillusioned with his bad grades, he simply quit college – and never went back. A fraction of college students also share the same experience as John, with only 30 percent of the entering students actually graduated from a two-year public college (Raley 4). Teachers in college for the most part don't really care whether or not you are in class. All it means is that if you are not there, you are going to get a failing grade if it happens too often. Missing too many classes will cause the teacher to withdraw you from the class, resulting in a failing grade. If you do it the smart way you would withdraw from the class yourself because then it would have no negative effect on your overall G.P.A. In high school the teachers are always on you about attendance. If you miss too many days you can fail. If you are not in class they want to know why. They also want a note from your parents excusing you from class. Some schools even want your parents to call you in sick if you are not going to be there. If you do not have a note they can write you up for an unauthorized absence and, give you a detention.
Frank J. Sulloway, researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has studied the differences in sets of siblings throughout history. Aristotle says, “Moreover this activity must occupy a complete lifetime; for one swallow does not make spring, nor does one fine day; and similarly one day or brief period of happiness does not make a man supremely blessed and happy.”. When he says this he is claiming that in order to be virtuous you must practice it and perfect it daily in order to be excellent, thus leading to happiness. Aristotle then begins to talks about how different professions view perfection. He talks about a carpenter and a geometrician and how they view the right angle. He says, “…the former is content with that approximation to it which satisfies the purpose of his work; the latter being a student of truth, looks for its essence or essential attributes.”. What Aristotle is saying is, the carpenter will never get a perfect right angle when constructing anything he is building, but he will get very close to a right angle and it will be sufficient enough to get the task he needs done completed correctly. A carpenter knows this though, but if he can get as close to a perfect right angle as possible he will complete his project excellently making him ultimately happy and virtuous. A geometrician on the other hand looks for perfection of the right angle. A geometrician’s job is to find exactly 90 degrees when studying right triangles. Because his job is specifically finding the 90-degree angle, performing excellently and virtuously would be finding exactly 90 degrees making him happy. Both the virtuous carpenter and virtuous geometrician have their different versions of excellence, but that does not mean neither are excellent because the faculties they have are
