Besides being a mentor and a role model, a coach needs to find ways to keep his or her athletes motivated, while developing and improving the players’ skills. There are athletes who are naturally able to build upon their motivation and use whatever necessary to improve their skills. There are also athletes who need constant rewards and reinforcement provided by the coach or fans.
There are two types of rewards: Intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. What distinguishes these two from each other is how the athlete responds. For instance, an athlete that is only driven by ego, status and constant praise is being motivated extrinsically. While an example of intrinsic motivation is being able to enjoy the game, be a part of the team and not needing constant accolades in order to do your best. An athlete that is the best because of hard work and dedication receives intrinsic reward. He is

When a coach realizes the types of motivation that can influence the athletes’ decisions and how they respond to learning, will aid in performance. Both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation also explains how much effort an athlete will put into training. It is the coach’s responsibility to encourage his players so that the drive to do their best is not lost. Keeping practices interesting and allowing all athletes a chance to participate, will prevent them from becoming bored and possible quitting the team. Providing strategies to enhance motivation internally to be successful is important since the drive among athletes vary. For both the intrinsic and extrinsic athlete, goals set by a coach that focus on the athlete’s performance and not on the outcome can help them achieve their goals. While there are many reasons why an athlete achieves, learns and reacts the way they do, for a coach to understand this can give him ability to change and improve
In order to see outcomes in this area of improvement, we as coaches must re-evaluate not only our athletes, but, in addition, our coaching styles. Of course, we all want to tell ourselves that we are great coaches and it's the athletes who are not following direction...
Coaching is an integral part of helping achieve one’s maximum abilities. Dr. Gawande (2013) explains that, “Coaches are not teachers, but they teach. They’re not your boss—in professional tennis, golf, and skating, the athlete hires and fires the coach—but they can be bossy” (p. 3). It is difficult to say what is the exact function of a coach, however, they help bring forth another point of view different from our own and they also help bring about the right mindset in order to subdue a weakness.
College athletes are undoubtedly some of the hardest working people in the world. Not only are they living the life of an average student, they also have a strenuous schedule with their specific sport. One of the most discussed topics in the world of college athletics is whether or not student-athletes should be paid money for playing sports. The people who disagree with the idea have some good arguments to make. Primarily that the athletes get to go to school for free for playing sports. Another argument is that if student-athletes were to get paid then it would ruin the amateurism of college sports. People who are against paying the athletes do not want to see the young people become focused on money. “Paying student-athletes would dramatically shift their focus away from where it should be - gaining knowledge and skills for life after college” (Lewis and Williams). This is very understandable because one of the biggest reasons college sports are so popular is because the athletes play for school pride and for bragging rights. They play because they enjoy the game, not because it is their job. Most people that disagree with the idea of paying the athletes fail to realize what really goes on behind the scenes. At most Universities around the country the bulk of the income the school receives is brought in through the athletic programs. In fact the football and basketball teams usually bring in enough money to completely pay for the rest of the athletic programs all together. To get a better understanding of how much has changed in the world of college sports a little history must be learned.
As I have asserted, coaching is far more than winning or losing. A coach is an essential cog in shaping qualities such as sportsmanship, competitiveness, self discipline, and work ethic. A quality coach can build a player up while a bad coach can tear them down. My goal as a coach was to always leave the player striving to be the best they could be. A good coach
There is no better place to learn the value of hard work and dedication than in a sport. Coaches have the ability to instill values into their players and shape their character. They are great mentors who offer valid advice and only want to see their athlete succeed. In an article titled “Coach, What is Your Impact?” it says that when players have a coach that is concerned not only with their athletic performance but also their genuine well b...
The process of becoming a great Coach requires a mix of intelligence, time, hard work, dedication, and knowledge of the sport that someone is coaching. Coaches have the opportunity to impact the players life in a huge way. Most players want to look up to their coach; because that is how influential that they can be in life. The goals every year of a coach is to win a conference championship and win a major championship. The goals vary every year for certain teams and coaches. A reason to become a coach could be the influence that coaches had on one’s childhood growing up, as coaches are usually looked at as great role models. (Foster)
On the subject of this, coaches are the reason players learn, and get better. They are there to help them push them to be the best they can be no matter what it takes. For example, my track coach Mr. Olson, is one of the best guys I know. Not only is he a role model of mine, but he inspires me to become a better runner everyday. At practice he isn’t super pushy to the point where it can be harmful, he’s caring.
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching.
It is amazing to watch how most athletes perform at their peak and continue to produce and set record-breaking performances. What drives them to these high levels of motivation and productivity? They may come from various influences and source of motivation and these similar sources can also energize certain individuals affect behavior and arouse their drive.
A Coach's Powerful Influence on Athletes A coach's role is to guide athletes through their athletic journey, but in some instances coaches can actually create barriers and hurdles on their path to success. Their role is crucial in the development of athletes, teaching them the rules of the sport, making technique corrections, developing mental toughness, and creating a team bond. By building a positive relationship with the athlete in a comfortable environment, coaches hope to maximize the potential of each individual athlete. However, they need to be mindful of their approach so that they do not hinder the progression of an athlete or affect the overall wellbeing of the team. The influence of different coaches on all areas of the team and individual athletes, including mental
The play An Experiment with an Air Pump by Shelagh Stephenson is written in two different eras, Stephenson had added a 1799 story and a 1999 story that link back together. In the beginning, an art piece is shown by Joseph Wright, this piece is called An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump (1768). This piece of art can be related back throughout the play by Stephenson. Throughout this essay, I will identify the significance to the name on the play and also show how the piece of art and Robert Boyle’s Experiment 41 are shown in Stephenson’s play.
Should it be mandatory for athletes to participate in physical education (phys-ed)? This topic is a huge debate, however I strongly believe that student-athletes should not have to take gym class. There are many reasons why they should not. To start off, athletes participating in gym class puts them at risk for obtaining an injury (Jarocha). This can result in injuries that are detrimental to an athlete’s season or possibly their career (“Sport”).
A sport coaching is an important way of developing the career of athletes. It involves a manager or a coach helping sportspeople to utilize their abilities and advance in their sports careers. Coaches usually watch his/her performer in a match, identify areas that need improvement in the performer’s sporting, and develop plans for training sessions that will be used to correct the problems identified. The coach usually applies some skills which are usually gained through formal education and training or through experience and observation (Knowles et al 2005). This includes the use of an appropriate coaching philosophy to learn the psychological aspects of sportspeople and set the stage for performance within a sports team. A coaching philosophy
The author has initially likened the term coaching to a sports team. In this context, the coach attempts to inspire the team to win games. Sport coaches help players realize their potential and motivate them to perform through discipline and teaching them relevant skills, techniques, and tactics. This is usually achieved through mutual communication and the fostering of meaningful relationships with the team members.
Motivation needs motivators to help athletes when they seem to have nothing left. Although in sports we want to see consistent plays, performance, and skills, motivation is something that is not consistent. “Athlete’s motivation is being permanently upgraded, developed and changed under the different environmental influences present during sports participation” (Baric, 2007). “Situational factors act interactively on athletes’ dispositions; the variations in sports behavior are the functions of personal characteristics (goals, skills, knowledge, personality traits, etc.) and the environmental influences (physical and social alike)” (Baric, 2007). Personal and environmental influence can make a difference in how an athlete gains motivation. Motivation from a coach or a parent can lead an athlete to either see the support in a negative or positive view. Screaming, yelling, body language, and tone of voice can really present what someone is saying to be considered either in a positive or negative light. As a coach, you have to understand how you are presenting yourself towards your team or athlete. Parents, teammates, and supporters have to analyze how they are coming off within a situation especially when you are trying to motivate someone. When you have a disconnection between your verbal and non-verbal communication, an athlete can take the information and motivation as a negative and not positively. Coaches as everyone else need to learn how to communicate with their athletes and team. Motivation is something all athlete should posse on their own, but sometimes athlete needs support. No championship or a game was won, because of one person it takes coaches, parents, supporters, trainers, and so much more to make an athlete want to win even if it is a backyard game. Motivation plays a huge role in what a coach can do not only in a leadership role or
