Sara Bareilles wrote “She Used to Be Mine” for the stage adaptation of “Waitress” she starred in. The musical is about a pregnant waitress in an abusive marriage who gets a second chance at her dreams when she enters a baking contest. “She Used to Be Mine” is a ballad about grieving the person you once were and coming to terms with who you are today, after the many trials and tribulations that life brings. Sara Bareilles’ moving lyrics and use of musical elements like pace and melody create a song that makes even the most upbeat and self-confident people pause and think of their younger, brighter, sparkly-eyed selves. I don’t remember exactly when I found this song, but it has been one of my favorites for a few years. As a freshman in high school, my friend, Maggie, got me into Broadway musicals by introducing me to Hamilton, and I’m sure I found this song …show more content…
Put simply, this song calms me down when I am sad because it makes me feel understood and seen. The song has a simple and timeless musical style with a repetitive but enchanting piano track that is comforting yet solemn. A mild and consistent pace reflects the theme of feeling stuck as the person you are and missing the person you used to be. Later in the song, changes in volume and intensity represent the singer’s change in attitude. She shifts from grieving the person she used to be to realizing that that younger version of herself is still inside her. Being a person you don’t entirely love is a concept that is most likely very familiar to all of us. When people look back and see how different they are now, it can be a sudden and jolting realization – for some, it feels free and for others, it is a cage. I appreciate how the shift in the song’s intensity pays tribute to that strong energy. Maybe Sara’s belt makes you feel happier, perhaps it makes you burst into tears. Either way, you feel the
The piano is what sets the mood of the whole piece, the beginning starts off slow and gloomy sounding, then the vocalist begins to sing and confirms that this song is going to be unhappy. Although the song is gloomy sounding, I still like it, the piano has a pleasant melody and it is calming. It sounds like a song that should be played in a movie when a loved one dies and everyone’s moored at a funeral.
Whenever I play this song, I can’t help but remember my childhood. My parents struggled financially but, that was never an excuse for them. They always took my brothers and I out on small adventures. One of the most memorable memories I get when I play this song is when my parents would take us out to park to have a barbecue, while my brothers and I ran through the park till we became tired and hungry. Whenever I need a break from the world, I listen to this song just to remind myself of those special moments, even though those days won’t ever return, they are memories I will always treasure.
In this song one can tell that the singer is very sad and depressed about many things that have happened in his life and the love ones that have passed away. When he sings this lyric “My sweetest friend…. I will let you down” you can tell that it is about how his loved ones have passed on and he let
There are a couple of diverse conflicting emotions that convey change throughout the song. It mainly focuses on relief after accepting God. In the song, the author expresses, “ Every heartache and failure, every broken dream; You're the God who sees, the God who rescued
Furthermore, the literary devices of shift, metaphor, and imagery allude to the positive, hopeful attitude of the song within the warning and advice that the speaker gives his friend. The shift between the story (7-15, 22-31) and the conversation shows when the speaker switches from telling to story to the friend and actually talking to the friend. The story helps to put emphasis on the fact that it’s not too late for the “friend” to start over, or “put the past away”. By mentioning this sad story and suggesting for his friend to get help, the singer presents an overall idea of hope; that the “friend” that they are singing (to?) still has a chance at a normal, happy life.
...eturn. I relate to this song from a past relationship where I gave little to nothing back in return. This song is an inspiration to me, and I love the story behind the story. Tim had two inspirations in writing this song, from the book itself and a past relationship of his own. Tim Lopez and his band The Plain White T’s have produced many albums, and they’re an astounding band. Every one of all ages and genders can relate to this song.
The personification of the jukebox being the narrator is key because music was an important part of their relationship in the past. The narrator tries to get his attention by playing all the songs that he likes, songs that are associated with love. Her being a jukebox also displays her helplessness and restricted ability to win the affection of her man back. The vivid imagery supplied by the author improves the reader’s understanding of the relationship that the narrator had with the man as a whole. We learn how close they once were, because the narrator notices the little things about the man’s emotions and his attire. The contrast between the narrator and the new woman is important because without it, we would have no idea as to why the man stopped caring for the narrator. We learn by their differences that the man is more in love with the more youthful, appearance oriented woman as opposed to his former, older, less beautiful lover. No matter what the narrator did she couldn’t stop the man from moving on, which is the primary message of this poem. No matter how hard we try, relationships will fade away, and people will move on to something
This song talks a lot about the baggage of the past that people hold onto instead of letting it go. All that baggage is only going to end up hurting you more and more instead of helping you in any way possible. An example is the opening
The man feels abandoned in a corner and he drinks for the sadness he feels. While drinking, he tells himself I do not understand why you left me, if I know she loved me, so if you ever regret your decision he will be waiting for you. Basically, the man feels broken emotionally because the women he loved, left him for no reason. This song to me is not a dancing song, however the song is more about remembering your ex-wife, ex-girlfriend or ex husband and ex-boyfriend. For me personally, this song reminds me of drinking, the title literally means bitter shots of liquor. The way the song shares the hurt the man feels by the women that left him. I could almost picture a man sitting at a bar drinking to his ex saying, “I’m drinking because of you, you caused this”. I could picture that scene in my head because I have seen my friends in Mexico and my cousins in Mexico do
Throughout the song the tone changes from a disappointed and unsatisfied feeling until it progresses into a hopeful and maturing tone. This transformation of tone follows the story almost perfectly and allows the reader to feel a connection to the transformation of the protagonist. This transformation from “expecting the world” (line 1) to realising that some things must happen for others to come into motion “the sun must set to rise” (line 24) is especially impactful and emotional when paired with the lines “ This could be para-para-paradise, para-para-paradise” that are repeated to show her newly established happiness and maturity. Ultimately, this progression from disappointed
“The world is beating you down, I’m around through every mood / You’re my downfall, you’re my muse / My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues / I can’t stop singing, it’s ringing, in my head for you.” She brings him down but also inspires him at the same time. He can’t stop thinking about her.
Her song is about her feelings of sadness that come around the ending summer; The main theme is about Lana and her summertime sweetheart having to part ways by summers end and her emotions of when that last encounter occurs. Summer romances are always short and fun, but ending the summer relationship is always a bit saddening and depressing. Although I personally do not relate with a romantic experience from this past summer, the feelings she describes in the song whe...
The song, “Just a Girl,” relates so well to the short story, “The Necklace.” It relates in many ways and shows many different sides of the story including: how she let the money get her her, what she is like when she sees her old friend after many harsh years, what her husband thinks of her, and lastly how she confused where she stood in the class systems. Overall, I would say that this song is a good comparison to the story and the main
Instant communication is both helping and hurting us. However, it is more so hurting us than helping. Sure we can find out anything we need, have a communication device, and a lot more cool features. The thing is for most people they don't have self control. They will use it in the most inappropriate times leading to some bad outcomes.
When Selena’s voice sighed, "And I still can’t believe that you came up to me and said I love you," she was consoling hearts, letting them know that love does come true. To the listeners that do not have someone in their heart, "Dreaming of You" is a beautiful song that still touches the senses. Music can move a person in incredible ways, whether by healing, inspiring, saddening, or even angering. But when a song touches in a positive way, it imprints a lasting memory of itself in the heart and soul.
