One song that has been of importance to me since coming to Maryland would be “Summertime Sadness” by Lana Del Ray. The entire album from which the song comes from is one of my personal all time favorites. I remember seeing her for the first time on Saturday Night Live where she was the musical guest. She was performing her popular single “Video Games” off of her album Born to Die. Her performance was not theatrical at all; in fact it was very minimalistic. The performance was supposed to be just about the song and not specifically about her showmanship. The critics gave her negative reviews about her lack of energy and how the performance was lacking emotion. It just made me more intrigued in her music. I downloaded her album right after that and didn’t really get around to listen to it until the beginning of the summer going into my freshmen year at Maryland. I would be lying if I did not say I had a huge crush on her, which also added to my liking of her music. One particular song on the album that was most important to me was “Summertime Sadness”. The song portrayed my feelings of leaving home for school and starting a new chapter in my life. The song’s genre also are subgenres of Rock which have inspirations to bands/producers Dr. Warfield has taught our class. Her song is about her feelings of sadness that come around the ending summer; The main theme is about Lana and her summertime sweetheart having to part ways by summers end and her emotions of when that last encounter occurs. Summer romances are always short and fun, but ending the summer relationship is always a bit saddening and depressing. Although I personally do not relate with a romantic experience from this past summer, the feelings she describes in the song whe... ... middle of paper ... ...wering her voice to add mystery and a defined sound only applicable to Del Ray. I personally think that her new persona creates and intriguing guise that leads to artistic music. Lana even says, “I was a singer, not a very popular one, who once had dreams of becoming a beautiful poet”(Staff). Her lyrics exemplify this perfectly as each song sounds like a piece that could be read in café accompanied by the audience snaps of acknowledgement. Works Cited "Far from Dusty." New Statesman. In her story, “Greenleaf”, the author Flannery O’Conner shows us that people can sometimes blind their factual vision of the world through a mask of dreams, so that they would not be able to make a distinction between reality and their dreams of reality. O’Conner unveils this through the use of point of view , character, irony, and
Homesick is a novel that exposes many different relationships, the strength of relationships, and how they can endure tremendous pain. The various relationships between Alec and Vera, Alec and Daniel, and Vera and Daniel are considerably different because of the variation in generation represented by each character. Each relationship in this family has its strengths and weaknesses depending on the past of the relationships. The relationships in the novel Homesick are seen through all of the character's eyes, so we can see how each character felt about the other characters. These characters do not tend to say what they think, we can see this many times throughout the novel. These relationships can be observed by seeing how they act, speak, and treat one another.
King Solomon wrote wisely, and later was wisely paraphrased by the folk band “The Byrds”, “To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven...” (Ecclesiastes 3:1,8). Seasons often represent the periods of a person’s life; birth, youth, age and death. In the short story “Summer” by David Updike, the lake provides an eternal and unchanging witness to Homer’s transition from season to season and from boy to man.
Many times when reading a novel, the reader connects with one of the characters and begins to sympathize with them. This could be because the reader understands what the character is going through or because we get to see things from the character’s perspective and their emotions and that in return allows a bond to form for the reader. The character that is the most intriguing for me and the one I found comparing to every book that I read during school was Stacey from the book “Ravensong” Lee Maracle. The character Stacey goes through a lot of internal battle with herself and it’s on her path to discovery that she begins to understand herself and what she’s capable of. Throughout the novel, Stacey has a few issues she tries to work through. This is emphasized through her village and in her school that is located across the bridge in white town. Stacey begins dealing with the loss of Nora, and elder in her town. And this in return begins the chain of events that Stacey begins on the path of self-discovery not only on herself but everyone around her. She begins to see things differently and clearly. Stacey is a very complex and confused character, and she begins to work through these complexities through her thoughts, statements and actions.
Straying away from life as a whole only to be alone, some may say is the strong way to heal themselves when dealing with extreme grief or a major crisis . In the book Wild, twenty-two year old Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost it all. Dealing with the loss of her mother, her family torn to pieces, and her very own marriage was being destroyed right before her very eyes. Living life with nothing more to lose, lifeless, she made the most life changing decision of her life. Strayed never seems remorseful on her decisions to up and leave everything behind while deciding to flee from it all. This being her way of dealing with life, it shows her as being strong; a woman of great strength and character. She shows personal strength, which is more than just a physical word. It is a word of very high value and can only be defined by searching deep within your very own soul.

...as won throughout her singing and acting career are countless. Even Dolly’s physical appearance and voice have made such a statement in the entertainment world. There have even been many other entertainers that have tried to follow her footsteps of fashion and image but no one can pull it off like Dolly can. I’m certain that this famous pop culture icon is not done yet entertaining and giving more to our society. I don’t imagine there will be another entertainer that will be more famous in the pop culture world as Dolly Parton.
Strange fruit is and amazing dark poem told by Billie Holiday as very powerful song. Strange Fruit is a terrifying protest against the inhumane acts of racism. Strange Fruit was about the murders and lynching going on in the south at the time from public hangings to burnings. The south has a cruel and terrifying past that haunts the very people who still live down there and remind them that only a short time ago was no one prosecuted for killing someone of dark skin since whole towns were involved in it.
Some can be dancers, comedians, events hosts, models, DJs and so much more but I’m just here to talk about drag queen singers. This essay will talk about the production of a drag queen music video and what has to be done to change the appearance of the artist and also depict the meaning of two music videos.
As a child, she and her family loved music. For example, her uncle was a bona fide recording artist, while her dad was a church organist. In addition, when she was
This as you can imagine, spiked much precedented assumptions outside her fanbase especially. As with freedom, comes the wish of limitation once answers can only be sought in those confines. Only, that too is impossible. Fever Ray is naturally the kind of artist that enjoys having her fans linger on notions much like these. And having them steer their own thoughts on her music which is in this case, the music video.
In her description, she was nothing but a mass of shaking nervousness. However, once she started singing, all the shaking halted and a voice was heard that changed the world in just a matter of time. Rihanna in her childhood was inspired by Bob Marley, Madonna, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey. This reflected most in her very first single “Pon de Replay”, which was a reggae inspired dance track, immediately hitting the top 2 on the Billboard Singles Chart. The song not only reached second place but also shout out to the world: Rihanna is coming!
This music video is told from the perspective of the queen. She has no king and is searching for an equal. A group of men come to her bearing gifts to show they are worthy of such an honor. If the gift is not sufficient Perry uses her dark magic upon the man and transforms the man into an object. Katy Perry is the center of attention and is always in the front of the camera. The
Lana (actual name Lizzy Grant) has been around since 2010, but only started being noticed in 2012 with her release of “Born to die”, she instantly flew to number 1 on Billboard and her popularity didn’t end there, in 2014 and even 2015, her albums “Ultraviolence” and “Honeymoon” peaked at numbers 1 and 2 respectively, showing just how much of an influence she has as an artist, especially for an Indie artist. Now moving onto the fairly fresh Halsey. Known before for her YouTube covers (and reimagining of songs to call out T*yl*r Sw*ft) and her previous 2014 EP “Room 93”, she has been making her presence known amongst the likes of the Tumblr scrolling and Starbucks sipping teens (me, minus the Starbucks). But her company is a lot more concrete than that; and by that I mean: Halsey’s (real name Ashley Frangipane) first official album, “Badlands” debuted in the summer of 2015 at number 2 on Billboard. Now, our next contender for “Indie Pop Phenomenon” can’t really be compared to our earlier two, but she should not be overlooked, and she’s also my favorite. Introducing the moody and surreal Melanie Martinez. Arguably known best for her hauntingly raspy voice and artistic aesthetic on season 3 of NBC’s “The Voice” Martinez too has been cementing herself as a serious Indie-act. After being knocked out of the competition, Martinez went on to record her first EP “Dollhouse” in 2013
