By now you might have seen a kid wearing some piece of clothing or at least some accessory that offers up some unknown name or some abnormal reference; by now if you’re the type of person who surfs YouTube to seemingly no end, then you’ve definitely been recommended the video of some strange, unfamiliar artist. If you are that type of person and let’s say: decided to leave your marathon of cat videos to check this one out, the first thing you probably would have picked up on is its sound. As you’re listening to it, you might realize it sounds close to pop…but not exactly there yet, like pop if it had taken an art course. Well there is a name for this now unavoidable genre, Indie pop, and it’s becoming a lot more prominent in today’s …show more content…
I’d also like to rephrase my earlier statement because while Indie Pop already has a set definition, it has been loosened and now used as a blanket term for a plethora of genres, these could include alternative, rock, gloom or glam pop and so much more, what essentially defines today’s standards of Indie Pop is that it sounds different from whatever’s mainstream at the time. And, Lorde herself is an interesting phenomenon, coming out of possibly nowhere with the number one hit “Royals” back in late 2013, she skyrocketed to number 1 on billboard. For such a strange thing to happen to an unknown artist and even more queer for it be to granted to such a strange style of music is more or less interesting, and this has now been happening to other Indie-acts especially this …show more content…
Lana (actual name Lizzy Grant) has been around since 2010, but only started being noticed in 2012 with her release of “Born to die”, she instantly flew to number 1 on Billboard and her popularity didn’t end there, in 2014 and even 2015, her albums “Ultraviolence” and “Honeymoon” peaked at numbers 1 and 2 respectively, showing just how much of an influence she has as an artist, especially for an Indie artist. Now moving onto the fairly fresh Halsey. Known before for her YouTube covers (and reimagining of songs to call out T*yl*r Sw*ft) and her previous 2014 EP “Room 93”, she has been making her presence known amongst the likes of the Tumblr scrolling and Starbucks sipping teens (me, minus the Starbucks). But her company is a lot more concrete than that; and by that I mean: Halsey’s (real name Ashley Frangipane) first official album, “Badlands” debuted in the summer of 2015 at number 2 on Billboard. Now, our next contender for “Indie Pop Phenomenon” can’t really be compared to our earlier two, but she should not be overlooked, and she’s also my favorite. Introducing the moody and surreal Melanie Martinez. Arguably known best for her hauntingly raspy voice and artistic aesthetic on season 3 of NBC’s “The Voice” Martinez too has been cementing herself as a serious Indie-act. After being knocked out of the competition, Martinez went on to record her first EP “Dollhouse” in 2013
The genre of this album can be described as pop and rock. Yet the album has the musical styles of Alternative Pop/Rock, Punk Rock, and somewhat Indie/Underground. When I first heard this album I already had some knowledge about the songs, but I never took the time to notice how the music sounded. The introduction seems faster than the rest of the album and has a more upbeat sound to it. Although it is not completely rock because they do not seem to be rocking out like some of the other past rockers in the class. Many of the s...

I think classic rock is the best because it is true classic music. It is what started all rock of today. Classic rock is better than most rock days because it sounded way better back when the classic rock bands were popular. Today the “classic rock” is not as good as it was. Bands like Nirvana, The Beach Boys, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Queen, Pink Floyd, etc, are the bands that started it all.
Most things have their beginnings in something small: a word, a breath, or idea; but not music. Music begins with a single vibration. It explodes and carries on, morphing worlds of unrelated personas. It lives rampantly in the mouths of millions of unruly and free-spirited teenagers, like a fever. The rock 'n roll trend that defiantly rose against the conformist ideology of the mid-twentieth century left remnants that commenced the start of a progressing society: a culture that redefined the rules of society and pushed social and moral limits while addressing social concerns.
Ashley Frangipane, also known by her stage name Halsey, is a modern day indie pop singer/songwriter. Halsey grew up with a musical background, playing the cello, viola, and violin; however, Halsey took a step in a new direction at the age of 14 by buying an acoustic guitar. After purchasing her guitar she began posting covers on YouTube and creating a fan base on MySpace. Halsey started performing in at the age of 18, when she needed a source of income to pay her rent. In 2014 Halsey released her first EP, which became popular quickly. Halsey’s first album Badlands released on August 28th, 2015. Halsey’s musical ambience is hypnotic and ethereal, while her lyrics are emotionally-rich and cleverly-written. Halsey’s musical style, unmistakably
The changes in rock and roll music reflected the mood of the population in the United States during the Vietnam War. Rock and roll, written as rock ‘n’ roll, music was fully born in the 1950’s and formed from electric blues and gospel music. Rock and roll is characterized by electric guitars, a strong rhythm and youth-orientated music. This music became popular because of the children of the decade. Parents called this type of music “noise.” While parents were listening to calm music, their children were listening to rock n roll.
In the early 1980s, the "new wave" movement, a sub genre of punk rock that began in the '70s, was generating a more sophisticated pop sound. In Britain, artists including bands such as the Clash, Squeeze, and the Police attained both critical and commercial acceptance. The Pretenders, another British band established in the late 70s, was led by an American-born singer and songwriter, Chrissie Hynde. In the United States, the Los Angeles-based band X navigated the transition from punk to new wave, and the New York-based group Talking Heads with a big assist from MTV, succeeded in fusing art rock with funk and African rhythms. Which leads me to my next new 80's genre.
What he means by this is that we do not base our opinions on music being authentic but rather if the person behind it is authentic in the eyes of the public. Society wants to be able to relate to an artist as another ordinary human and because of this, authenticity can be a marketable trait that can be paramount in the success of a performer. This idea is also echoed throughout ‘Living underground is tough’ Solomon (2005) and ‘Reality Goes Pop!’ Holmes (2004). This review will compare and contrast between the articles, analysing the methodology behind each and
This is an extremely difficult topic to tackle. Essentially, I must choose only one artist to listen to for an undetermined amount of time. Then I have to pick only one album from said artist. The problem arises from having a wide arrange of music that I enjoy listening to on a regular basis, and struggling with to narrow it down to only a single artist.
2. What is the difference between a.. Describe the “rockabilly” sound pioneered by Sun Records in the mid-1950s. The term rockabilly has been used to describe a type of music that was very unique and without a doubt one of the most influential genres of music in the development of rock and roll. Dating back to the 1950’s, Rockabilly was a new and interesting form of music.
The rising punk rock scene that has existed for decades is notorious for how easy it is to get on stage. The spotlight usually does not last long which causes bands to come and go, but that treasured few moments captures an indescribable adrenaline rush that is compared to a similar rush that results from using drugs. The lifestyles of some musicians fall into this desire for a thrill while some musicians can control it.
...to be contradictions on the subject, as well as opinions on when does an alternative rock group stop being or becomes “alternative rock music”? Is it defined by the sound of the music, the image of the group, or both? One can also ask if it’s about the era or time the group existed, just like the genre term of classic rock. Bands such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, or Pink Floyd weren’t classified as classic rock music when they were forming and popular during their prime. What really defeats the purpose of the common definition of alternative rock music is during the early 1990’s when popular underground bands like Soundgarden and Nirvana were signed to labels and changed the face of rock music and incorporated the traits that defined alternative rock music into mainstream rock that continue to this day. The term “alternative rock music” has really lost its meaning.
She resembles the punk like image of the Ramones, and depending on what song you are listening to, she could sound like the Beatles or The Rolling Stones. She has continued to impress the world of music by changing from more punk sounds to more pop rock sounds. Although there is much controversy on what style of music she actually is considered, I think it is great for her to be as diverse as possible in this generation. She has great influences to look up to such as the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Ramones. I believe her rebellious attitude and pop like sound will continue to contribute to her success within the next decade.
In rock music its target audience is the youth. And by youth I am not referring to teenagers, but instead to the mentality of youth, the adults and teens still in the sociological stage between being a ‘kid’ and accepting the responsibilities of ‘adulthood’ [Weinstein pg6] These youth negotiate the genre and change it to their liking. For example both males and females have different subgenres of rock targeted specifically at them. Males are seen from a young age as being naughty and rowdy, not very responsible and thus given more freedom. While girls are seen as quiet and polite, with very low aggression. These traits have reflected in the genres that are targeted at the two genders. Males were targeted with Heavy Metal as it expressed the qualities the very qualities they will have to give up in order to become adults and how they will lose their freedom. While for females rock music is soft and romantic, females will typically grow up faster than males and leave youth behind in order to take up responsibilities. An example of how the music was negotiated to fit the two genders is seem in the 1960s when performers such as Carole king and James Taylor transformed themes of protest into sentimental commentaries, romance and illusions of youth. [Weinstein pg 12-13] While heavy metal bands such as Black Sabbath sung about politicians and how disgusting they are for exploiting young people in the name of greed which is shown in the song Wicked World. This very characteristic of rock being created by the youth for the youth is still alive today, for example during the 2004 presidential election Green Day released American Idiot. The song was about how the media and political are brainwashing Americans to remove their individuality. The singer wanted to warn America of this and prevent them from turning into ‘idiots’ and
It should not come by any surprise that when you search the genre “indie” on applications like Pandora or Spotify, sites that allow for endless amounts of personalized radio stations, you get numerous premade stations. During its origin, the term “indie” was just used to differentiate between mainstream and independent artists. The emphasis of independence was solely of music labels and because of this it left room for confusion. When discussed in present day, the term still simply categorizes music that is “not under practices” and “creative control” from large musical corporations (Novara and Henry 816). As a term it quickly began to lose its initial meaning and significance because so many people began to associate it with certain sounds
