This is an extremely difficult topic to tackle. Essentially, I must choose only one artist to listen to for an undetermined amount of time. Then I have to pick only one album from said artist. The problem arises from having a wide arrange of music that I enjoy listening to on a regular basis, and struggling with to narrow it down to only a single artist.
I begin first to break down everything by genre to assist in making my decision easier on what I would want to listen to while being stranded on an island. I enjoy most everything that I listen to, with a few exceptions. Country used to be a genre that I could not have anything to do with. Recently though, I have edged myself into it slightly, however, it still receives the least amount of recognition among most other genres of music. Recently I have also begun to listen to more rap music. Not exactly new to me as I have always been familiar with the works of artists such as Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and even Eminem. What is new from this category, is the depth I have allowed myself to explore and discover some of the new

artists, and further, to discover many popular pieces of that past that are today’s foundation. Another genre that came close, in regards of making into my deserted island playlist, was the 90’s rock. Many of my favorite artists make up this category of music, which really dates back to my roots of being introduced to music. Bands such as 311 and Incubus were among my favorites in my teenage years, in addition, were extremely close to offer the one album I would choose to listen to. Rock music prior to the 90’s is largely unknown to myself, though there are songs that I do recognize from time to time. As a side note, The Zombies ‘Time of the Season’ and Blue Oyster Cult’s ‘(Don’t Fear) The Reaper’ are among my all-time favorite songs, cow bell and all. I feel that alternative music relates to me best, not only now but also in my former years.
Some of the top bands that I associate as being alternative include The Used (a local Orem band), Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, A Perfect Circle, Tool, and countless many more. Why I associate myself with alternative rock music above any others could be a number of reasons. I really enjoy the beat, rhythm, and overall sound that the drums and electric guitars make in unison; but this is true of why I like any music. I think that a very strong reason I relate to this more is because of how well the lyrics correlate with my own life. I like how no matter where I am at in life, the lyrics can really speak to me and mean something. When I listen to the same song later in life, not only does it bring a sort of nostalgia with it, but the same lyrics are able to relay something entirely different from years
before. Among all of these, I believe I am sticking with the band that came straight ‘outta’ Utah, The Used. The reason for picking them above any of the others is based solely on the fact that I had to pick only one for my island playlist, not to sell them short on what they have accomplished as a band. Now this brings us to the next stage of the process, which is to pick an album from The Used that I would want to listen to over and over again. Of the six albums that they have put out since 2002, I am able to identify with their self-titled album ‘The Used’ and ‘In Love and Death’, which incidentally are two of their earliest works they put out. Of these two choices, I suppose I would choose their self-titled album ‘The Used’ for my deserted island playlist because it is the album that first introduced me to The Used. Now that I have the genre, artist, and album that I would bring to my deserted island, it is time to choose the first couple of songs that I would listen to from their ‘The Used’ album. While each stands out to me in their own way, the few that I have chosen are ‘The Taste of Ink’, ‘A Box Full of Sharp Objects’, and ‘Bulimic’. While I was somewhat unsuccessful in being able to identify the rhythm, key and form of songs in the exercises, I know that I love each of these characteristics within these songs. The instruments used are not very different from other subgroups of rock and roll; namely using drums, bass, electric guitar, and vocals. The lyrics, however, are what really sells this for me. In the song ‘Bulimic’ the chorus contains the following, ‘Goodbye to you, Goodbye to you. You’re taking up my time’ and later on in the song, it continues, ‘I’m about to see a million things I’ve thought I’d never seen before and I, I’m about to do all of the things I dreamed of, And I don’t even miss you at all’. I feel these lyrics are extremely powerful to myself because I believe in a tit-for-tat system of life. If people abuse this system by taking much more than they give back, then it is time to close or limit that relationship because they are just ‘taking up my time’. Now I have chosen to bring The Used with me to this deserted island, and I have picked the first couple of songs that I would listen to. This is what I would choose today, but any other day I may choose a different artist within the rock genre, or even within hip hop. I do love the variety of music that I listen to and couldn’t imagine limiting myself to a single type.
Music is a large consumption of my daily life and the artists I listen to have shaped me in some way. Listening to music is one of my most time
If any one person should know anything about my music tastes they should know this, I listen to almost every kind of music. I don't see the point of confining myself to only one or two different genres. I have learned to love all kinds of music for all different aspects.
The music I like today is built on the structures of the tonal system. They use the pitches and melodies to hook you into the music. Most of the music I like has lyrics to it. This adds the effect of bringing you into the song by shaping it into a story. An example would be “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin, and “Jeremy” by Pearl Jam. I see the tonal system like a stairway; each level builds off the progress of the one before it, and adds something to it.
Music can be a very fun topic to discuss. Many people have different preferences or other first choices in the type of music they listen to. I like many different types of music. But as any other person I have one I prefer. Me, being the normal teenager, I prefer hip-hop.
Up until this year, before taking the class intermediate composition, I thought I was a terrible writer. I was right. Writing isn’t something that I enjoy doing, nor am I good at. Writing is difficult for me because I’m not very good at explaining things in a professional manner, that can be easily well written. While writing you are expected to make little to no mistakes, which is not something I’m great at. I am so much better at explaining things with verbal words rather than written words. I had not taken any extra writing classes before this year rather than the mandatory ones. Like I had stated before, I hate writing, with a passion. I dread writing anything, especially an essay for school, like this one. I’m
But one of the things that I admire the most is the fact that it
Rock music is a term that should be familiar. Originally dubbed “rock and roll” in the 1940’s and 1950’s, rock and roll is almost always fronted by an electrical guitar and heavily influenced by blues, R&B, and even country music. By the late 1960’s and early 1970’s rock and roll began to be shortened to just “rock music”, and the entire style starting branching out into other sub-genres such as punk rock, heavy metal, garage rock, hard rock, among others. The sub-genre in question however is Alternative Rock, which is generally defined as despite following the fundamentals of rock music, it strays away from what is considered “mainstream” at the time by using concepts such as extensive underground music association, muddied or distorted guitars, more prominent use of power chords, and even a sort of rebellious or defiant attitude in lyrics and sound.
I’ll never forget the Christmas that I received my first MP3 player. It was a gift from my Grandmother, and she had already downloaded some of my favorite music onto it. The MP3 player had around fifty classic rock songs, and it was the start of my ever-growing music library. My father always listened to classic rock, and I learned to love it from a young age. I can still remember driving around in his Ford Bronco blasting AC/DC and Metallica like it was just yesterday. That type of music made me feel like a hardcore kid that could do anything he wanted. Classic rock was the beginning of my love for music, and still has a special place in my heart to this day. I downloaded more and more rock onto my first MP3 player until I ran out of memory and needed another. Over time I branched out to new genres of music, and found myself really liking the way some of the rap music made me feel. I did not always agree with the material that was being sung, but it made me feel a certain way that nothing else could compare to. Nowadays I love the beat and rhythm of
My sister, Jo, and I are both highly musical and love music, but our opinions of excellent music are contrasting, which can cause issues when trying to pick what is going to play on the radio. I prefer the old school sound such as jazz, bluegrass, and classical music while Jo prefers techno, pop, and punk rock. Though our personal preference on music seems trivial, it in reality, shows the type of culture we prefer. I am a lover of culture and classical thinking. I am a reader; I
Some in peoples life they listen to music. If some people listen to music they probably have a favorite song or type of genre. Typically is they don't like the song or genre they don't listen to it and they listen to something else. The types of genres that are most popular are pop, rap, country, and rock. My favorite music is country because it is a really good type of genre I enjoy.
Being instrumental reflective has more weaknesses than strength. By interviewing three people with different communication styles, I realize the tendency and pattern of my own style. I identify the reflective side as the “real me” because I use it most of the time. It serves as a good listener along normal conversation with friends and family members because conflict seldom happens through this approach. The only weakness for the reflective side is lack of confidence when I communicate at workplace. The instrumental side appears only when there are conflicts and problems that need to be resolved. The above example from Enesha and Kathy clearly explains how I change to instrumental in a sudden.
Alternative rock has been an up and coming genre that is easily overlooked, but still a prominent type of music that leaves its mark in the industry today. Often referred to as Indie rock, the genre is full of new and unique concepts that defy traditional rock patterns. The styles that we hear will slowly make it in the mainstream soon because it is a great style of music that can be fresh and easily appreciated. “Ragged guitar riffs, ferocious decibel levels, and unpredictable song structures were its trademarks, but the sounds—from the percussively headlong to the distorted and depressive—proliferated as fast as the labels for them”, said Deboran Cohen. Cohen describes exactly how I feel about alternative rock, how the sounds vary significantly but they come together to make something
I have been studying classical vocal repertoire for five years. My interest in music began when I began taking harp lessons at age 6. As I grew up, I surrounded myself with music, singing songs with my family, performing new pieces I had taught myself. In 5th grade, I began voice lessons, and intensely participated in my middle school choir the year after. Since then, I have honed my craft as a musician and performer.
Have you ever been told to do something you didn 't know how? To learn a skill you 've never been taught, to apply a trait you 've never been shown, and to complete an assignment you have no real grasp on, well I have. Right now as I write every word come up with everything thought my understanding of what actually needs to be accomplished fails me. But as I read what little information was provided to me about a topic, listened to bits my teacher was able to piece together her unable to teach what she herself was untaught, I came up with my best plan an option for success. Music, something I’ve always loved and grew up listening to with my sister, I decided this would have to be the back bone of this assignment the genre my paper would have to be in.
For me personally, music appreciation is defined as looking at different pieces of music and musical forms, and learning to find appreciation for them. This appreciation is formed not only by listening to several pieces of music, but by learning to understand what you may be listening too. This involves introducing yourself to many pieces of music and learning to interpret, what makes each piece different and unique. Understanding the historical background and societal changes that have taken place during the creation of the musical piece, is also an important factor to consider. Music is not only creative, but it also makes up part of a societies history. Music is an art form that connects different societies and cultures together, it possess the amazing ability to make us into one.
