It’s no secret that Fever Ray (Karin Dreijer Andersson), a Swedish singer and songwriter of the twenty first century, really works at capturing the mystery and ever so boiling angst in her horror, ritualistic styled music video “If I had a heart”. Although the underlying message of this is cryptic and generally not so understood by many, one thing is definitely certain - it was created out of the guise of bringing fear to the table and juggling raw emotions she often enjoys toying with. The crisp, sacrificial take is very prevalent in this video. With the help of hounds, and hordes of dead bodies overshadowed by masked, tikki-like figures and eidolons - witch doctors, too. This gives the audience a lot of room for dissection. From the idea of the figures being vengeful spirits, to the singer herself being the knife behind the killing en masse. Even she went on to explain how she made this video with the intention of it being the kind of visual not bound to only one modus of deciphering. But rather, that she’d prefer the viewers to come up with their own deduction of the whole act. Their own take. This is one of the reasons why I chose it.
