Many critics became hung up on the appearances of the actors and actresses themselves instead of their performances. Reviewer, Rob Hedelt, claims the cast looks “like they just walked out of ‘Abercrombie and Fitch’” (Hedelt). Genzlinger stated “everyone in this fantasy is good-looking in that bland, Disney way” (Genzlinger). In “’The Shannara Chronicles’: TV Review,” Keith Uhlich compares the actors and actresses to Barbie and Ken dolls, believing their looks were what got them hired (Uhlich). Uhlich singles out actor, Austin Butler’s, appearance of “beestung lips and Fabio Jr. blond mane [that] seems more suited to strutting on a Paris catwalk than wielding a broadsword” (Uhlich). As for the young cast’s acting, Uhlich calls everyone out on having “blandly pretty faces who give continuously stilted line readings” (Uhlich). However, actors that have been in the business longer such as James Remar and John Rhys-Davies are praised for delivering splendid performances (Uhlich). Most notable is Allison Keene’s review that The Shannara Chronicles is “extremely racially and sexually diverse” (Keene). In addition, “Shannara is in keeping with the modern trend of putting young women on an equal playing field in genre stories” (Zeitchik). Garry McConnachie believes the characters to be interesting and highlights Drayton’s performance of moving from a stiff opening on the show to a beacon of hope (McConnachie). Austin Butler is also noted as progressing in his role as a lead character in The Shannara Chronicles
The Shannara Chronicles is a complex and thrilling tv show that portrays the hero’s journey in an interesting way. The show follows both a male and female protagonist. This leads to an interesting dynamic in the hero's journey. While both heroes undergo the process in their own ways, there are changes that are only developed through the protagonists being together.
For example, some topics that David Arnason mocked were fairy tale stories, such as Cinderella. Linda resembles Cinderella; long blonde hair, blue eyes, tall and slim. In many fairy tale stories, there are princes ‘save’ the princess and in “A Girl’s Story”, the fisherman comes to the lake and meets Linda, coincidentally. The author makes both of the characters good looking, because people expect people in a love story to be attractive.
The talented and beautiful cast of The True Blood series has made media headlines nationally. People were selected on a global scale to fill the roles for multiple reasons Tom Shales shares his thoughts on the appearance of the characters. Aesthetic reasons played a large part in character selection. Since sex appeal played a large portion of the story, the characters had to be appealing to the global standard for attractive. With something for everyone, including all sexual orientations being a factor, the characters had to be cast with the common standard of sexy in mind.

...Never have I read a book that actually picked me up, and placed me into the book. This book actually took me into a battle, then to a quiet town, then into the battle again. Sometimes Brooks even got me to feel the ambiance or mood of certain things or places. Never has a book done that to me. I don’t think I would recommend it for a student looking for comedy, or a laugh, but I would recommend it to everyone else. This book covers tons of different genres, in a matter of a chapter or two. This book has captured me enough to continue reading the trilogy of Shannara.

...p; Perhaps Branagh used these actors for their names to help pull in the ratings. If this is the case, the ratings would have been high without them. Perhaps, he used them to get the image of them as “uneducated stars'; out of peoples’ minds. Or perhaps they used him for the dame reason. Either way, their parts do not fit the roles they played. Regardless the movie was excellent and it was immensely enjoyed.
The character which was personally out of my favor was Tyler Croft because he intimidated and bullied poor Skiff Beaman. Tyler is a filthy rich boy who was definitely looked at, from my point of view, as the antagonist of the story. He would always mock and put Skiff down. He was always in Skiff’s path, to ruin his life and to make him fail. These two boys had a long history, even their fathers were enemies. One example which showed intimidation from Tyler Croft was when he continually mocked Skiff for having his boat sink. “Hey Skiffy!” he goes, popping a wheelie and showing off. ”Heard that old wreck of yours finally went under. Good riddance! Ugly thing stunk up the whole creek. That wasn’t a boat – it was an outhouse!” This shows us how nasty and cruel Tyler Croft is, but he doesn’t stop there. He goes beyond the subject and teases Skiff about his personal life and family. “Ooh, Skiffy’s cryin’!” “Am not!” I said, looking around for something to throw at him, a rotten apple for his rotten head. “Skiffy’s cryin’ and I ain’t lyin’ Little Skiff Beaman live in a shack, he pees in a bucket and craps out back! Hey lobster boy! Your momma’s dead, your daddy’s drunk! Go back to the swamp, you dirty punk!” This evidently showed us that Tyler Croft was spoiled rotten and was obviously not taught his manners. He really didn’t care about Skiff’s mum who had passed away
