So much more goes into costuming than one could ever think. The process is massively long and requires teams of people to complete a whole films worth of costumes. Designers work day in and day out to fabricate intricate designs that are as impressive as they are beautiful. Making costumes takes creativity and a deep awareness of the needs of the directors and actors. While a beautiful dress will always capture the attention of the audience, it rarely gets recognition as a true piece of art, filled with meaning. The next time you go to the theatre, I implore you to look closely at the details of the costume, the folds, the pattern the structure, everything. Look at the costume as if it told you everything about the character before
He said the worst thing they [costume designer] can wear are interesting clothes. “Nothing destroys confidence like cleverly inventive clothes worn by your costume or wardrobe person because it means you are spending time thinking about yourself. You need to save all of your energy and design essence for the work.” -Long, William. Interview.
Baz Luhrmann is smart in using young, attractive characters to make the adaptation more appealing to a more adolescent audience. Shakespeare would be proud of it. Through an explosion of colourful costumes, the audience is amazed at Luhrmann’s use of symbolic ensembles.
The costume that stuck out to me was the Orcus who was played by Liam Herbert. His character is a gay devil with a very feminine personality. His character’s dichotomy was hilarious because you wouldn’t expect the person who represents the games version of a devil to have a costume with kiss pajamas and rhinestone tights. Another moment that really touched me was when Agnes visited Kaliope and realized that she couldn’t walk. This affected me because it was another character that found sanctuary in the video game because it is the only place that they feel
The actors struggled with playing adjacent to actors in animal costumes. The head of the animal costumes was placed on top of the actor’s head, seemingly connected to a bike helmet. Thus, the actor’s faces were showing, distracting the actors playing adjacent to them who would make direct eye contact with the actor instead of the costume’s eyes. Though a small detail, this somewhat took away from the scenes. A costume that really stuck out as aiding in the development of the world was the witch’s costume when she regains her beauty. Her dress was an emerald green with black lace covering most of it. The green resembled the brightened mood in the ending of the first act while the black overlay of lace eluded to the dark future that was coming in the second
In the Lurhmann production he “exaggerated” the characters so it was more obvious to distinguish. how they are portrayed, e.g. at the scene of the party Tybalt is dressed as the devil, here just by his costume his personality is. fit perfectly so the audience can see. As well as Tybalt wearing “new” clothing, so is every other actor in the movie.
The costumes that Colbert wore fit her heiress life style. She was dressed in the finest silk in the beginning and end of the movie. While she was traveling she was more dressed down, which included her stripped sweater and her below the knee cut skirt. As for Gable, his costumes were very well put together. His traveling ensemble in the movie was a trench coat, jacket, and v-neck sweater over a button-down shirt. There were many different looks in this film, and the audience always feels as if they are looking at something new.
Everybody in theatre has their part to do in order for a play to be a smash-hit; If a certain department lacks or overlooks any important aspects the play will result in a flop. This means that everything from sound effects to costuming must be checked twice over. I want cover costuming because, it is single-handily the most stressful areas when orchestrating productions. For years, costumes were used in theatre, –masks being the first form of costume ever being dated- to show emotion or wore dresses and gowns to demonstrate who was the woman in the group, –in the earlier years only men were allowed to act- now (not only can every gender act) we carry costumes for every shape and size, enabled the “quick change” method, and a whole bunch of
Place yourself in a fairy tale setting, with trees and singing birds and cute woodland creatures. Now, think of your ideal hero, prince or true love in your fairy tale. You chose someone with external beauty; (you know) muscles, strong chin, or maybe a fair madden. However, the hero of the story I will talk about isn’t exactly handsome, this hero of course is Shrek, the hero of a typical storybook fairytale with a weird and hilarious twist. My purpose is to explain why this Academy-Award winning animated film is better than the “Disney Princess” movies thanks to use of satire, great cast, and its moral messages.
When Halloween approaches, I feel the air becoming cooler and the nights becoming longer. Clouds over lap the moon creating an eerie look in the sky. Children grow more and more excited to put on their costumes, and they spend one night out of the whole year going door to door getting free candy. As I have grown up over the years, Halloween is celebrated differently for me. I always notice that even though it is celebrated differetly the people haven’t changed and that’s what makes it memorable.
The characters wore plaid, leather, tights, vests, big shirts and pants, torn pants, gloves, sweaters, and hats. Each costume fitted the interpretation of the character as the actor portrayed them. It also helped define the time period of the play and served as exposition in defining the character’s personality. Hair and makeup was used but not as much. There wasn’t anything major done to the character’s hair or
1. When students are all wearing the same outfit, they are less concerned about how they look and how they fit in with their peers; which helps them concentrate on their school work.

Fashion and film are art forms that have coexisted for decades, and although they are different, they also possess similar qualities. Pamela Church Gibson wrote in her book Film and Celebrity Culture that “film had a greater influence on fashion than any other form of visual culture” (Gibson 55). Fashion is an important part of film as it aids directors and writers in bringing characters and their personalities to life. Simultaneously, fashion has also benefited from films, as films are a popular source of inspiration for designers, who can be inspired by anything from storylines to characters. In an article, titled Film and Fashion: Just Friends, for the New York Times, Ruth La Ferla wrote that “wittingly or not, those viewers take in colors, subtle tactile impressions or an overall atmosphere that can linger in the mind for years, part of a vast store of images that may surface at any time” (La Ferla).
My experience watching a live theatre performance on stage was a fascinating one, most especially since it was my first time. I attended a staged performance of “The History Boys” in a small theatre called “The Little Theatre of Alexandria” at 8:00 pm on Wednesday June 8, 2016 in Alexandria, Virginia. The overall production of the play was a resounding experience for me particularly the performance of the actors and the design of the scene made the play seem real.
