True Blood is a new television series in many centuries of attempting to capitalize on Vampires. Based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels, these stories have been successful in print and now television. Vampires films have always been in abundance in entertainment media. Some are exceptionally well composed and timeless. Others are mediocre and ridiculous. The success of True Blood is based upon the societal interest in vampires, the well written script, and the exceptional cast of the film.

In his article “Undead on Arrival”, Tom Shales shares his opinions that liken discrimination of vampires to homophobia. Adapting the common used catch phrases, labeling their openness to their state of being as “out of the coffin”, and labeling their lifestyle as alternative the comparison cannot be denied. This allows people in today’s society to have a way to visualize the incorporation of yet another facture of modern society into the fantasy world. People who share the homophobic stance and those who are accepting of people’s life choices can see themselves aligning with one side or the other of the Vampire Rights Movement. The Vampires in True Blood are definitely a new breed. The talented and beautiful cast of The True Blood series has made media headlines nationally. People were selected on a global scale to fill the roles for multiple reasons Tom Shales shares his thoughts on the appearance of the characters. Aesthetic reasons played a large part in character selection. Since sex appeal played a large portion of the story, the characters had to be appealing to the global standard for attractive. With something for everyone, including all sexual orientations being a factor, the characters had to be cast with the common standard of sexy in mind.

The True Blood series had an excellent run and was successful on many levels. Turning obscure actors into common names, giving others titles such as “Sexiest Man Alive” and giving even others the ability to secure roles in international movies. The series itself was given awards and became celebrated on an international scale. But to those of us that were die-hard vampire fanatics since “The Lost Boys” swept the world in the 80’s, we were just happy that the vampire stories had been revived.
