In this assignment I will be talking about the seven benefits of diversity. I will also be giving the definitions of equality, diversity and rights and the concept to them in relation to health and social care. Equality: “Equality is about ensuring that every individual has an equal opportunity to make the most of their lives and talents, and believing that no one should have poorer life chances because of where, what or whom they were born, what they believe, or whether they have a disability” (Equalityhumanrights.com, 2015). In health and social care equality it is very important as we must make sure that everyone gets an equal opportunity and is given a chance to do what they like. This means that everyone is treated fairly, therefore eliminating prejudice thoughts, actions and discrimination. Diversity: This is when everyone is accepting of different races, ethnicity, religious beliefs and cultures. Diversity is essential in health and social care because others need to understand that everyone is unique and this should be respected. Being accepted in will make people feel more comfortable, safe and respected in the environment. We live in a very multi-cultural country which means we will be able to meet many different people from different backgrounds and have different cultures. A diverse society is beneficial as we are now able to learn new skills from different cultures as well as trying different foods and learning about different religions and traditions. Because everyone is learning and understanding the different cultures, religions and backgrounds they will now respect each other more and will not be frightened of change. Rights: these are things that people are entitled to from the day that they are born, a persons’ rights should not be affected by their gender, race, skin colour or beliefs. Everyone has basic human rights such as food, water, shelter etc. However, people should not take advantage of the rights they have and use it negatively. People should also make sure that they respect the rights of others. The human Rights Act was put in place in 1998 to ensure that everyone receives the rights that they are entitled to and are protected from abuse and neglect. An examples of human rights are freedom of expression, Freedom of thought, conscience and religion etc. Economic benefits: The economy also plays a big part in today’s society by making it more accepting to diversity in the UK. Small things that we don’t notice in our areas for example food, clothes and even the people around us. These resources and new skills were not available long time ago. Many of our products are not manufactured in the UK, “it was estimated last year that of all the toys sold in the UK, 85% are made in China” (News.bbc.co.uk, (2015). We also have a range of different food options such as Indian, Turkish, Chinese and Mexican etc. This all shows that the world is definitely benefiting from different cultures and from a diverse country. Additionally this benefits health and social care as we are now able to work in partnership with other countries and be provided with quality equipment. This also links to health and social care as we are able to work with other people from different backgrounds and use their skills and knowledge in the working environment. Seven benefits: The arts: The art is one of the best ways of bringing people with different backgrounds and cultures together. For example, museums, galleries and carnivals etc. These places can be used to educate other people about different cultures and this is one reason why the arts are very beneficial to society. Notting Hill carnival is a very popular event that takes place every year during the summer, bringing together people from multicultural backgrounds. It is a fusion of colour, culture, exotic foods and is a traditional event that has been taking place in the city for many years. BBC states that “No matter what your age, or mode of transport, everyone is encouraged to join in” (bbc.co.uk, 2015). People can be taught about other cultures morals and ways of life from a young age, making them more understanding and considerate of others around them. This is useful in health and social care because practitioners will be more understanding and more knowledgeable of the service uses that they may come across. Cultural enrichment: This is when all religions, races, cultures and groups come together and can share a common ground with one another and forget and respect their differences. All of the other six benefits relate and help cultural enrichment within a society and culture. This is because cultural enrichment ensures religious and cultural arts can be learnt about, that people are given the opportunity to learn about different religions and cultures, languages and that this does not stop people from communicating and socialising with people with varies backgrounds. Therefore cultural enrichment can benefit people who work in health and social care and improve lives as they will become more knowledgeable and understanding of peoples morals and ways of life. Berman states that “when we stand together against racism, let us not forget what a powerful and essential tool the arts are in the struggle for social justice as they teach us profound lessons about the most important art of all, the art of being human” (ywcahartford.org, 2015). In health and social care practitioners will meet many people from different countries and with different religions, so it is important that they know about this so that they are able to meet their needs. Lastly this also relates to health and social care because practitioners will have to not be stereotypical and support all their patients equally. Tolerance: This is when you are able to accept and deal with the beliefs or habits of others. In health and social care practitioners will meet and come across patients and staff members they may not get along with or have disagreements with, however it is the practitioner’s job to be professional and not let things get to them. Practitioners must ensure that they still treat each patient equally. Education: Throughout your education you will meet many people from different religions, backgrounds and cultures. Education is one of the many ways that help people get along with each other as they are having to work together during class and are learning about each other. Education helps to eliminate stereotypical beliefs as you get to know people and ensures equality. UNESCO states that “education is a fundamental human right” (unesco.org, 2015). Therefore everyone is given to opportunity to learn and pursue their dreams. Additionally this benefits health and social care because practitioners will learn to work with multi-cultural people as well as working with multi-cultural service users. Education will have also allowed practitioners to learn about other cultures so that they are aware of their beliefs. Food: I believe that food is very important and plays a big part in today’s society. Different religions allow different things, for example in Islam it states that certain meats must be halal and that they are not allows to eat pork and gelatine. Another example can be Jews, they believe that “the Torah tells us not to "boil a kid in its mother's milk." (Ex. 23:19; Ex. 34:26; Deut. 14:21). The Oral Torah explains that this passage prohibits eating meat and dairy together” (Jewfaq.org, 2015). It is very important that health and social care practitioners are aware of any needs the patient may have so that it meets their religious or cultural requirements. Moreover food can also bring society together as people are able to try and enjoy many cultural foods. Today in Britain “Indian (21.2%) and Chinese (20.8%) meals out are the most popular, while traditional British cuisine2 ranked third, with 18.5% noting it as their favourite” (www.ncass.org.uk, 2015). There is such a diverse range of cuisines and ethnic restaurants for people to try for example Turkish, Mexican, Italian Caribbean etc. people are also more open to going and exploring different countries meaning that they are able to experience new things from all over the world. This is why it is important that health and social care practitioners can provide patients with a range of food options as for some people eating their cultural foods could make them feel more comfortable and relaxed, giving them a sense of relief if they are going to be away from home for a long while. On the other hand it is also important that practitioners ensure that the food is balanced and provides patients with vital nutrition to keep them healthy. Language: Language can be a very beneficial thing for people. Being able to communicate with different people can help you meet new people from loads of different countries. Not only can this help with socialisation, this can also open new doors for health and social care practitioners as they will have the opportunity to work in different countries and a new environment. However, language can also be useful in the UK as not every service user will be able to speak English and if practitioners cannot communicate clearly with the patient this would make getting messages across very difficult. Facts show that “Chinese tops the list of most popular world languages, with over one billion speakers. English trails in third place, with 335 million speakers” (Infoplease.com, 2015). This means that we cannot assume that everyone is able to speak English as it is not the most popular language in the world. Another benefit of being able to talk a different language is that this will also help build a bond between a practitioner and the service user, this could also increase their trust in you. In health and social care a trusting bond between a practitioner and a patient is essential because patients should feel as though they can talk to the practitioner if they have any questions or problems. Social cohesion: Social cohesion is when people with different cultures, backgrounds and religions feel accepted and respected within their community.
Sometimes people from the same groups can come together to support and protect one another. This could be for many reasons such as to feel a sense of belonging. They could be brought together as they may share the same beliefs and values. It is essential that social cohesion takes place in all communities to ensure that everyone feels valued and respected no matter their where they are from and what they believe in. social cohesion is also beneficial as other people will be able to learn about each other’s perspectives and views and will erase stereotypical thoughts. Social cohesion is also used in health and social care as practitioners need to be able to work with others and work together as a team, this includes being able to communicate effectively and efficiently with staff members. Conclusion: Overall I believe that diversity within Britain has really made a positive difference to the country and helped the country develop and progress. People are now more open to meeting new people, doing new things and experiences. Diversity within the UK has also helped minimise stereotypical beliefs and supported those with different cultures, backgrounds and
religions.

In health policy, the two concepts that cause unequal treatment are health disparities and health differences. Health disparities are resulted from social factors that are avoidable and unjust. For example, saying ovarian cancer death rates are higher because men have better research on prostate cancer (Smith, 2016). “The extent and nature of health disparities changes over the life course” (Adler, 2008, p. 241). I believe equality means every individual should be treated and given the same attention no matter who they are. No individual should be discriminated due to their disability. The equality act came into effect in October 2010. This is a law which protects people from being treated differently because of their disability. Equality in health care is ensuring everyone has an access to medical care despite who they are. Equality is about creating a fairer society where everyone regardless of who they are has a chance to fulfil their potential. By getting rid of prejudice and discrimination, the NHS can now distribute services that are personal, fair and diverse society which is healthier and happier.
Dental professionals have a commitment to respect diversity and create equity of access to dental care for everyone (GDC, 2014). Diversity describes any dimension that can be used to differentiate an individual from others. It requires understanding that each individual is unique and accepting and respecting these individual differences (QCC,2013). These differences could be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender, age, socio-economic status or other ideologies (QCC, 2013). Understanding the impact that these differences may pose is vital in dealing professionally with people from diverse backgrounds and delivering equal treatment for all. Equality refers to identical treatment in dealings quantitates and values (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Thus, creating equality for all might not mean that there are no disparities between different groups. Equity on the other hand refers to fairness and the equality of outcomes and involves recognizing aspects of a system that may disadvantage a certain group and correcting them (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Therefore, in order to overcome potential pitfalls that may create inequity to access, there is a need to explore the different factors encountered in our diverse society that may create these issues. As an example, patients from different ethnic backgrounds may be faced with barriers accounting for the less frequent use of dental care (CQC. 2010). This group will be used as an example and some of the issues behind this inequity of access will be looked at further.

Amendment I of the United States Constitution states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." Through this simple statement made so many years ago, the founding fathers laid down not only the framework for the basic freedoms that Americans cherish, but also the foundation for establishing a diverse nation. You see, without diversity, there cannot be freedom, and without freedom, there cannot be America.
In my opinion, equality is not about being politically correct or telling people what they can and cannot say Its about treating others as you would want to be treated .Equality means making sure patient is been treated equally regardless of colour, age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation and disability. For the NHS, this means every individual have the right to be treated fairly and equally to be able to access services. By so doing , It gives out a positive message and encourage an atmosphere of respect . However, As stated in the Equality Act 2010, the act protect and prevent people who are disabled and vulnerable people from discrimination.
Diversity is a notion, when applied to the majority of circumstances, can create a positive conclusion. The trick to producing a positive outcome is often how the different aspects are brought together. Consider a classic dinner combination peas and carrots, the two colors look appealing and the two flavors comes together as one making a superb side dish. Now consider oil and water, these two substance are not often considered a good combination. Although, this is not always the case; olive oil and vinegar (which is water based) when mixed, come together into a delectable salad dressing. Diversity and inclusion should also apply to humans by bringing people together who are different it can creates a whole that is enhanced by the uniqueness of each individual.
One of many problems encountered in philosophy is the idea of how diversity ties in with unity. Diversity is thought to be all about race but rather diversity is the composition of different aspects that construct an individual or object; the economical status of a family or individual can be one aspect of what diversity is. Diversity is very obvious but the concept of unity leaves one to wonder if unity truly exists. I believe that diversity and unity have close ties with each other. The benefits of living in a multi-ethnic society are that you get to meet new people and learn interesting things about them. People get a chance to understand others and realise they’re equal to us. It makes people less ignorant and alters stereotypical views they may have had beforehand from media influence or friends/relatives. We begin to respect them more and understand their views on specific subjects. This could help people become less racist. Also, you get a chance to learn a variety of new languages. If you were learning Spanish at school for example, you could practice it by having a conversation with somebody who’s previously lived there. You get a chance to widen your knowledge about the outside world by learning interesting facts from people from different cultures. It makes life more interesting and less repetitive because without a multi-ethnic society everybody would be similar and you wouldn’t experience many new things. We wouldn’t know about certain religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism. The only known religion would be Christianity so people wouldn’t be able to choose from a wide range of religions like you can now. Furthermore, beautiful buildings such as mosques and temples wouldn’t be around. Our country would be so much more dull and uninteresting. A multi-ethnic society can bring new ideas and ways of doing things into the everyday lives of people living in Britain.
The world as a whole is becoming more diverse. There is diversity in schools and in the workplace. People should understand that diversity is what makes the world go around. If all people had the same characteristics then the world would be a very boring place. Even though all human beings are the same in some ways, we are still culturally different. Cultural diversity lets us appreciate our differences. Different cultural groups have varying beliefs, customs, values, and a wide variety of characteristics that make them special. Cultural influences make people see the world differently and cultural diversity should be appreciated.
I have learned in this class that diversity is a number of traits that every person has that makes them an individual these traits can be ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, age etc. It is important to stay open with diversity realizing it gives one individuality and is a good thing and people need to become aware of this and keep an open mind.
